February, 1978Everyone is returning back to Hogwarts following the new year… or least mostly everyone. There are only whispers but some seats that had been full before break now sit empty and gossip runs amuck about the fate of these students; a new school or something much more deadly? Considering the rising tensions outside of the walls of the school, either scenario is just as likely.

Alright, kids, we've discussed it, and your friendly neighborhood admin team has come to a decision: from now on, you can sort your own OC characters.
Most of you can be trusted with this privilege, but there are a few things to keep in mind. First of all, not all bad characters are Slytherins, and not all good characters are Gryffindors. A Hufflepuff could easily be a death eater character, so long as they think they're right and still fit those Hufflepuff traits of loyalty and hard work. A Slytherin character might not care at all about the war, or they might be dead set against Voldemort and his followers. It's okay to have a character that fits into the types seen in the books, but stereotype should not be your only reason for sorting them into a particular house.
Likewise, don't sort an evil character into Gryffindor with no sense of bravery, simply to be contrary. Characters should be sorted into a certain house because they fit the traits of that house as listed in the song. For instance, Gryffindors should be in Gryffindor because they're brave or daring, Hufflepuffs because they're just, loyal, and hardworking, Ravenclaws because they're witty, studious or intelligent, and Slytherins because they're cunning and/or ambitious. None of those traits specifically have to do with alliance, although they can lead someone to one side or the other, depending on other factors in their life.
Basically, just think before you sort. If not, we reserve the right to suggest a different house.
If you were one of the few who enjoyed having characters sorted by the staff, that option is still available. Just make sure to note it in your application when you come to the "House & Year" section like so:
HOUSE & YEAR ;; [staffsort] & 4th
Do not simply leave it blank, or we'll most likely think that you forgot to add the house, and will ask you to correct it. Other than that, you're pretty set to go. Happy sorting!
