Chapter One-Losing it All

“You have until the count of 10 to tell me what I want to hear,” a man cloaked in dark clothes and a domino mask on his face said. He held a gun to another man’s head.

“I told you everything I know,” the other man cried out.

“One,” the masked man told him.

“Please, I don’t know anything else!” The man shouted.

“Two.”

“I’ll give you anything; just let me go!”

“You know what I want,” the masked man whispered to him.

“I don’t even know you!”

The masked man rolled his eyes, “I’m an old friend. It seems you are of no use to me. Ten.” He pulled the trigger, and blood shot in all directions.
-----------------------------

“Father Narconi, Peter is here to see you,” a man dressed in a striped suit told the fat Father Narconi. The fat man wore a dark black suit, and had his hair slicked back. He was an old man, but still he sat there and smoked a cigar. His face was wrinkled, and his eyes were heavy. He also had a turkey neck, and plump lips.

“Bring him in,” he said. The other man waved to Peter who was standing on the other side of the door. Standing tall walked in Peter. He had jet black hair that was spiked. He wore He wore a black suit and a black tie to go with his hair. His shoes were waxed to shine. He wore sunglasses despite being indoors a mansion. “Peter! My boy, it’s been forever since I seen you,” Father Narconi yelled.

“Father Narconi, it has been a while,” Peter told him as he grabbed his hand and kissed his ring. Peter took off his shades and revealed his cold blue eyes.

“Did you finish the job?” asked Father Narconi.

“Turn to channel 7 and find out,” stated Peter. Father Narconi motioned to the other man in the room to turn on the TV. The screen lit up and he changed it to channel 7. On the screen was a rather large building on fire.

“That’s what happens when you forget to pay, good job Peter. You must be here to get paid then.”

“Yes sir, Father Narconi; I’m also here to tell you that was my last job. I’m here to retire from gang work. Rachel and I are getting married and I don’t want anything to happen to her.” Father Narconi’s face swelled with anger and his cheeks turned red.

“You can’t retire from this business my boy! You either work til you’re old, and die or you die before you get old. Retirement isn’t an option.” The fat old man took deeper puffs out of his cigar. “You can’t retire; I’ve raised you since you were a boy. I found you on the streets and then I turned you into one of my best men for any job.”

“I think you for everything you have done in my life. I’m ready to take care of myself and my family now.”

“You’re not ready!”

“Father Narconi, don’t forget all the money you paid me to do some jobs. Throughout the years it’s all added up. I’m ready to retire. No more gang life equals no more danger. I want to settle down now."

“If the police find out how…”

“They won’t find out. I’ll be on my way. I was hoping you would be more supportive.” Peter put his shades back on and walked out the door. Father Narconi sat in his chair with his mouth still gaped opened. He dropped his cigar in the floor and reached into his pocket.

“Taylor come here!” he shouted and the man from earlier showed up. At the same time Father Narconi pulled out a Revolver and shot the man in the chest. The man grabbed his chest and looked down. He looked back up at Father Narconi and blood started coming out of his mouth. His body went limp and he fell to the ground. Father Narconi pulled a handkerchief out of his front pocket and wiped the sweat off his brow. “I feel much better now; Susan could you please come in here and clean this up.” The blonde haired secretary walked in and took one look at the mess and turned back around. She came back into the room with another man.

“Clean this up so I can talk to Father Narconi,” she ordered the man.

“How dare he retire; it’s just another word for quitting, and nobody quits in this business as long as they work for me.”

“Father Narconi!” another man burst into the room, “Peter left this envelope for you!” The man handed Father Narconi the envelope that had a red rose as the seal.

“Dear Father Narconi,

You are invited to a masquerade party to celebrate me and Rachel getting married. I hope that I retiring will not have a negative effect on our relationship. I hope to see you there.

From,

Your good friend, Peter Rothman.”

“Are you going to go Father Narconi?” asked Susan. Father Narconi rubbed his chin and began to grin from ear to ear.

“We’re going to pay the future Mr. and Mrs. Rothman a visit tonight,” he laughed.
-------------------------------

Many people were filled into the ballroom. The ballroom was decorated with lots of gold trimming, and dark red curtains. The guests had on their masquerade mask. Some of them were bizarre, others were plain. The men wore black tuxedos and the women wore ballroom gowns fluffed out at the bottom.

The men and women danced and twirled to the sound of the music that was being played by the small orchestra Peter rented out for the night. The musicians also wore black tuxedos. There were violins, piccolos, flutes, and one harp in the small orchestra. The orchestra was put into the corner of the ballroom to make room for all the guests.

The ballroom had 10 huge windows on both sides of it. Beside each window was a round table, with a flower vase in the center and a white cloth to cover it up. On one side of the room was the door leading to a hallway where the front door was located. On the other side was a large railed staircase that led to the second floor. There was a large door at the top of the stairs where some guest would walk out to be introduced by a butler. The door opened and Rachel and Peter walked out and stood at the top of the stairs. Rachel was wearing a ling white gown with a white mask that covered most of her face. The mask extended out and looked like whiskers. Her mask still allowed her long brown hair to be seen in the back. Peter wore a black domino mask that covered only the top part of his head, and went down to the bridge of his nose. He wore a tuxedo just like every other man.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, I present you the future Mr. and Mrs. Rothman!” shouted a butler from the middle of the stairs. All the guests turned around a started to clap and cheer. Peter and Rachel went arm and arm and started to walk down the stairs.

“Thank you Wilfred,” Peter told the butler and the butler shook his head. Peter and Rachel waved with their free hands towards the guests and put on huge smiles on their faces. They headed towards the center of the room and faced each other. Peter grabbed around her waist and Rachel put her hands on his shoulders, and they stepped to the rhythm of the music.

“Now introducing Mr. Narconi and…” said another butler at the front door.

“Just more friends of Peter,” said Father Narconi with a smile on his face. “Smithy go back to the car and get the gifts.”

“Aaah, Father Narconi,” Peter shook his hand, “I’m not going to lie, I’m surprised to see you here.”

“Father Narconi? Peter talks about you, but this is the first time we’ve met,” Rachel told Father Narconi.

“It’s my pleasure to meet you,” Father Narconi grabbed and kissed her hand. He and the four other men that came with him wore black one sided mask that only covered the right side of their face. “You better keep Peter straight; he’s my best worker back at the office.” Peter’s smile faded away to a half smile half frown. Father Narconi saw the look on his face and started laughing. “I’m sorry Peter and Rachel, but I really have to go. I have some business to take care of.” He kissed Rachel’s hand again and started to head to the door. “My boys here are going to stay and bring in some gifts that I want to give to you two.”

“Thank you Mr. Narconi, it was nice meeting you.”

“Honey, I’ll be right back,” Peter told Rachel as he went towards the stairs. Halfway up he met Wilfred. “Come with me Wilfred,” he told him.

“Okay master Rothman,” and Wilfred followed him up the stairs and through the door. They entered a rather large room where some of the guest were. In the middle of the room was a spiral metal staircase going up. “May I ask where are we going?”

“We’re headed to the computer room; I want to look at something.” The two of them went up the staircase and headed down a series of hallways. At the end of one hallway was a bookcase. Peter searched through the books until he found the one he wanted. He pulled it off the shelf and opened it up; he pulled a key shaped like a credit card out of his pocket and slid it through the book. The bookcase began to movie out of the way and revealed a door. Inside the room were computers with images of the estate on the screens. “Wilfred keep an eye on the west side of the estate. Tell me what you see; I’ll be looking at the east side and the front door.”

“Yes master Rothman.” Wilfred took a seat that was in front of the screens and he began to search with his eyes. “The pool area looks safe, the rose garden looks safe, and….something’s amiss at the stables. There seem to be some cars parked there, and men talking there. I also see Mr. Narconi from before is over there.”

“Let me take a look,” and Peter saw exactly what Wilfred told him. “They could just be getting ready to leave.”

“I don’t think so; look again master Rothman.” The men were now carrying guns and headed to the front door.

“Wilfred open the safe.” Wilfred entered a password into the computer and a safe opened beside the computer desk. Peter rushed to it, and reached in a grabbed a 12 gauge shotgun with some ammo. He pulled out a Desert Eagle with some clips.

“Master Rothman, do you want me to go with you?”

“No Wilfred, I want you to get as many guests out as you can.” Peter exited the room, shotgun in hand. He headed back towards the ballroom the same way he left. He bumped into a couple of guests and he told them to get out. Before he got into the ballroom he heard gunshots ring. He rammed open the door and look down the stairs to see Rachel lying in a pool of blood with a man looking down at her. The guests began to scream and more shots came from the other thugs that were still inside.

“Rachel!” Peter yelled as he aimed at the thug and shot him. The thug flew back from the impact. Peter saw another thug standing in a corner massacring the orchestra. Peter put him in his sights and shot him. The thug had the same fate as the other one. Peter dropped the gun and ran to the body of Rachel. He put her cold corpse into his arms and began to cry. He caught the two remaining thugs in the corner of his eye. He pulled out the Desert Eagle and shot them. The front door was smashed down and more thugs ran in. Peter didn’t have enough time to react and he was shot in the arm he was holding the handgun. The thugs began their assault on the rest of the guests and Father Narconi walked through the door and went straight to Peter.

“I told you, you can’t retire from this business.” He turned back to his men. “Burn the place down and kill all that you find,” he told them. “I’m sorry Peter, you were like a son to me,” and he walked back through the front door, but before he did he poured gasoline in the floor.

“Get the matches!” a thug yelled. The thugs began dumping gasoline everywhere. They ran out of the mansion and threw a match behind them and the place went up in flames. Peter saw the flames coming towards him and the body of Rachel. He rose to his feet and tried to pick up her body, but was too weak to do so. He fell back down to his knees. He felt someone behind him grab underneath his arms.

“Come on master Rothman, we need to get out of here,” and Peter recognized that the voice was Wilfred. Wilfred dragged Peter through the flames and through the door. He continued to drag him to the front lawn where a small fountain was at. Wilfred used all his strength and threw him into the fountain to kill off any flames that were on Peter. After a couple of seconds Wilfred pulled Peter out of the water and placed him on the ground.

“Master Rothman are you….”

“Master Rothman? Peter Rothman is dead,” Peter told Wilfred. “The Narconi family thinks I’m dead so I am dead.”

“Master Rothman, you need to get to the hospital.”

“No! Then they will no I’m alive,” Peter got up from the ground and looked back to see all of his estate on fire. “When the police ask who’s alive don’t tell them that I am.”

“But, what will you do?”

“I swear that the Narconi family will pay for what they have done. After the police show up go to the bank and withdraw all my money and put it in your account. Tell the accountant who you are and they will let you. After that, go back to your home.”

“But Peter, this was my home.”

“Use the money to get yourself a new home then,” Peter told him. Peter turned around and headed to the road that led off of his estate.

“Peter, you still have your mask on,” Wilfred pointed out. Peter reached up and touched the mask that was still on his face.

“That’s how I want it to be,” and he continued in the direction he was already going in.
