Born as the second son to the Magnificent Lorenzo and Clarice Orsini, Giovanni was destined for the church from an early age. Tutored with his brothers by the illustrious humanists Angelo Poliziano, Giovanni Pico della Mirandolla, Marsilio Ficino and Bernardo Dovizi, he received an education not even money could buy.
After receiving the tonsure at the age of 7, he was given as many benefices and preferments as his father’s money and influence could buy. After the marriage of his sister Maddalena to Pope Innocent’s illegitimate son, Lorenzo managed to secure from Pope Innocent VIII a cardinal’s hat for his second son.
On March 8 1489, he became the youngest Cardinal in history at the tender age of thirteen although he was not allowed to act in any of his duties until after his graduation from the University of Pisa.
From 1489 to 1491, he studied canon law and theology alongside Cesare Borgia at the University of Pisa. Leading the Florentine faction, he profited from the teachings of various professors that his father had hired for the university. Graduating in 1491, he was invested with the insignia of a Cardinal on March 9th, 1492, and entered Rome within the month. He was received by the Pope the day after his arrival on March 22 with all the customary ceremonies.
His father Lorenzo’s unfortunate passing recalled him back to Florence in just one month. He stayed in Florence with his brother Piero thereafter, leaving a while to participate in the Conclave of 1492. Returning to Florence in August 1492, he remained until the expulsion of the Medici in 1494. He fled the city in the habit of a Franciscan monk and toured Germany, the Low Countries and France until he returned to Italy to stay with his sister in Genoa.
In 1500, he returned to Rome where he was received cordially by Alexander VI.
As a special protégé of Julius II, he was able to retake Florence in 1512 and reinstall his family. He won the Conclave of 1513 after the death of his patron and became Pope Leo X.

Role-Playing Sample:
Giovanni watched as they lowered his father into the grand crypt that lay open waiting for him. The darkness of the grave provided stark contrast to the white marble of the inner workings of San Lorenzo. For a moment he felt the incredible loneliness that his father must be feeling in the blackness of the tomb but reminded himself that his beloved uncle Giuliano was still with him. There were still widows and old women who mourned the death of the beautiful Giuliano, after whom his youngest and most cherished brother was named and Giovanni smiled because he felt sure that his mother and uncle would both be there to welcome his father into Heaven’s golden gates.

Turning to his brother Piero, he reached out to squeeze his shoulder. He didn’t know what was going through Piero’s head right then; their lives were so much different, but he wanted to reassure him that it wasn’t his father they should be worried about.

Despite the whispers of Savonarola’s pardon of their father’s sins, he had begun ranting against the Medici with renewed confidence. Pope Innocent too was near his death, and Giovanni didn’t know what the outcome of the next election would be. The Borgias, the della Roveres, the Sforzas, none of them Giovanni felt he could definitely trust. They didn’t trust him either, so it was rather fair. Giovanni would have to participate in the next conclave. He wasn’t quite sure if that would be the best idea.

Sighing, he grabbed Giuliano’s hand and led him away from the tomb. He was glad that Giuliano was still too young to understand the finality of the funeral. The beauty of their surroundings in the New Sacristy was enough to distract his younger brother from the sight of the coffin, and he felt sure that it was only a preview into the other world.

“Come, Giuliano, let us go home.” His voice was gentle, and his look to Piero indicated that he felt he should leave also. “We will have Maria serve some of the fresh fruit from Careggi.”
