ríocht
In the elven lands of Raguinia lies the great kingdom of Ríocht. It is a time of mourning as the beloved king has been found dead in his royal chambers. His wife has taken the throne and the people have embraced her as their sovereign queen. No one questions her story that assassins poisoned her husband; no one but her eldest son, the rightful heir to the throne. He believes his mother, drunk with power, has murdered her husband and betrayed the kingdom to form an alliance with Noxstern, an evil kingdom that controls an army of the dead. Without proof of his mother's plans, the young prince is wary of seeking support to overthrow her, though he believes that it may only be a matter of time before the kingdom is lost to the growing darkness overtaking the land.
The king is dead.
Long live the queen.

Ríocht is a fantasy rpg that takes place in a medieval elven kingdom where magic is feared, though it can be found if you know where to look.

The main plot revolves mostly around the castle and the royal family, but we love and encourage sub-plots!

Canon and original characters are welcome. We have no bans.

We also have an original Bestiary where contributions are encouraged and interactive battles in the forest where you choose the outcome.

Aletia

Aletia (pronounced Ah-let-e-ah) is a kingdom which originally formed when Laochra soldiers who fought for an ancient kingdom, which has since ceased to exist, were given the land as a reward for their valuable service in many great wars. The kingdom has been traditionally populated almost entirely by pure Laochra and those who were not either denied their blood entirely or at the very least shunned the practices of their other ancestry. Only in recent years have other races become slightly more accepted as the Aletian royal family decided to conduct an experiment to see how their kingdom could be improved. It remains to be seen if any profound change will occur.

The main source of income in the kingdom is in the trade of war. Merchants from Aletia are known around the land of Raguinia for selling their own specially crafted weaponry. The army of Aletia itself can also be bought, for the right price, but they are most likely to deal with kingdoms such as Anderon or Ríocht which have outlawed magic.

The kingdom is situated in the west of Raguinia and has an incredibly warm climate though it is slightly milder near the coast where the royal castle is located. The castle itself is made from a strong and heavy black marble and is surrounded by a high defensive wall. Aletia was designed to withstand any possible invasion; to this end every city in the small kingdom is home to a fortress that is used as a training ground for a different branch of the Aletian army.

Anderon

Anderon (pronounced On-dur-on) is home to the Sneachta. It is the kingdom furthest North in Raguinia where snow covers the land year round. There is little vegetation, although there is a vast population of assorted creatures in the area, most of which are carnivorous and extremely dangerous.

Due to the harsh climate and unfriendly wildlife, few merchants will travel there, especially not during the winter months. Not many visitors will make the dangerous trek through the snow-covered mountain paths, not even to sell their wares.

The palace of Anderon is made of polished ice, which was enchanted centuries ago to keep a comfortably warm temperature within its walls at all times. As such enchantments can no longer be performed due to magic being completely outlawed there, many of the inner walls of the palace have been sold to anyone in the kingdom with enough coin to purchase them.

The population there thrives against all odds in a land where water can only be obtained by melting ice in a climate that freezes wood before you can rub it together fast enough to get enough friction to make a fire.

Azaelux

Azaelux (pronounced Az-ay-lux) is populated both by the Dorchan and the Fiáinsal (Azaelux). Azaelux allows all forms of magic and is the most recent kingdom to have allied itself with Noxstern but they have never positioned themselves as a direct threat to anyone. To outsiders, Azaelux may appear to only be a vast wasteland of swamps and particularly hostile wildlife, however, the entire kingdom is located beneath the swamps and can only be accessed by a pure descendant of the original Fiáinsal bloodline. As a result, few outsiders ever travel there, for most of the ones that travel there alone never find the entrance and die in the swamplands.

The kingdom itself, just below the surface, is a bright and glittering land, rich with natural deposits of precious stones. Harvesting these stones without compromising the integrity of the kingdom walls is tricky and painstakingly slow work, though Noxstern has been applying much pressure in recent years for tribute to be paid to them from mining the walls. It seems to be only a matter of time before the alliance turns volatile, which would almost certainly end in tragedy for Azaelux as they bear little means to defend themselves from an enemy that they have already allowed within their kingdom.

It would not be the first time that the Fiáinsal lost to an enemy within. While Azaelux is the original home of the Fiáinsal, many centuries ago, the kingdom became divided between two brothers, both possible heirs to the throne. Tradition dictated that the brothers fight to the death, and so they carried on a long and vicious battle in the swamplands, destroying their own people and loved ones in the process. Their father, on his death bed, ended the fighting by banishing the more violent of his two sons, for he had slain his own sister and the king's only daughter while fighting for the throne. The less violent brother kept the throne in Azaelux and vowed to let go of the old traditions that had caused their people so much pain.

The other brother, overcome with anger over his banishment, vowed to build up his own kingdom and one day return to claim his brother's head. The Fiáinsal that followed him were successful in defeating one of the dwarven kingdoms and settled there in what is now called Hethran, though the brother himself fell during the battle and was therefore never able to claim his brother's head. As a result, the rivalry between the Azaelux Fiáinsal and the Hethran Fiáinsal continues to this day.

Hethran

Hethran (pronounced Heth-rin) is predominantly populated by the Fiáinsal (Hethran), though it is not their original home. The Hethran Fiáinsal are the descendants of the followers of the banished brother from Azaelux.

Hethran was once a peaceful dwarven kingdom which was attacked and overthrown by the Fiáinsal looking to make a new home, even if it meant taking it from someone else. The bones of the slaughtered dwarves are still in what has become known as 'The Bone District', which used to be a peaceful neighbourhood when the dwarves inhabited it. The Fiáinsal burned it down, dug a ditch and tossed in the bodies of the dwarves they murdered.

The Hethran Fiáinsal tend to be very barbaric and worship the old pagan gods, who require living sacrifices to be made to them. Altars stained with blood can be found all throughout the kingdom, as can traps that have been laid for unsuspecting outsiders. They have embraced the darkest magics to assist in these traps and the ancient rituals that they typically perform.

The royal castle, once a magnificent structure carved out of the side of a mountain, has begun to crumble from disrepair. A royal bloodline is no longer followed to seat the throne as anyone in Hethran that cannot readily kill to keep their status will certainly be killed instead.

Hethran has been allied with Noxstern for several centuries, though they are typically only a threat if you trespass on their land or threaten them first.

Keita

Keita (pronounced Kay-tah) is a quite grand forest kingdom in the East, which is populated mostly by the Adhmaid.

The city is nestled in the trees far above the ground, where it has stood for many centuries. Though it is an old kingdom, one would not know it as the Adhmaid keep their buildings in such good repair, making sure to protect and nurture the wood that they use for their structures.

There is no castle in Keita as the king of Adhmaid sees himself as a part of his people and not just their leader. His personal home looks no different than the homes of the regular townsfolk. There are no guards as every man, woman and child is trained to use a bow and arrows at a very young age.

Below the city, the woodlands are divided into two sections. One half is a sanctuary for their sacred wildlife and the other half is used as hunting grounds for the unprotected species for food and the exportation of pelts, horns and other useful appendages.

Although magic is no longer allowed in Keita, there is an ancient magical border between the two areas that keeps unprotected species from crossing into the sacred territory. It is an extremely serious offense to kill any creature in the sacred lands, though the punishment varies from a small fine to a death sentence, depending on the species that is killed there. There is no penalty for killing any animal in the hunting territory, even it is a sacred species that has wandered there. As such, a black market exists for different parts of sacred animals both within Keita and in other parts of Raguinia.

On the outskirts of the city, there is land that is still part of the kingdom, yet contains no buildings in its branches. The trees grown there are designated to be used as supplies and to be exported throughout Raguinia.

Midoria

Midoria (pronounced Mee-doh-ree-uh) is cloaked in mystery because no one can get to this kingdom in the middle of the sea. What is known is that, at least at one time, Midoria was populated by the Farraige, but very little is known about them other than that they are a race of elves that do exceptionally well in sea conditions.

Members may not make their character be from (or have ever been to) Midoria, nor can they be a part of The Farraige race at this time.

Noxstern

Noxstern (pronounced Nocks-stair-en) is solely populated by the Dorchan. It is the kingdom furthest to the South where the heat is relentless and the land is marred by active volcanoes. There is the smell of sulfur and rotting flesh throughout the kingdom.

There are three castles in Noxstern; one in the middle of the kingdom, one at the Eastern edge and another at the Western outskirts. This is because Noxstern has defeated and overtaken two other kingdoms to expand its lands. Still, Noxstern is only the second largest kingdom in Raguinia. (Ríocht is the largest.)

The kingdom is run by four brothers who have each lengthened their lives unnaturally using the darkest of magic. The three eldest brothers have their own castle while the youngest lives with Noxstern's army, training them for battle so that he too will one day be able to defeat a kingdom and take his own castle. They keep no royal bloodline to follow them and slaughter any woman that has a chance of bearing their child, as they fear that any heir would overtake them.

In recent years, the youngest brother devised a ritual that would make Noxstern's army more powerful than it has ever been. The ritual is performed by disemboweling the soldiers and using their intestines to make a salve that reanimates the corpse, making them an un-killable soldier in an army of the dead.

Noxstern's army's numbers rise steadily, though rumour has it that the dead soldiers are difficult to control. Many believe that this is the only reason that no other kingdoms have yet been attacked.

Ríocht

Ríocht (pronounced Ree-okht) is mainly populated by the Ardanian. Ríocht expands from central Raguinia into the Northern parts and is the largest kingdom in the land. It is a combination of many kingdoms that have formed peaceful unions over the years and so it tends to be a bit of a melting pot of cultures with a sampling of all races of elves being found there.

Because of the many cultures found there, it is not difficult to find those who are capable of using magic, however, its use is prohibited. Being caught using light magic will result in a fine (those that cannot pay are sentenced to work duty around the kingdom) but being caught using dark magic can result in a stay in the dungeons or an even steeper sentence, depending on the severity of the offence.

As it is so large, the kingdom has many cities, although the largest of which is the main city that surrounds Ríocht castle. Because the city itself is contained within walls, the population has grown remarkably in recent years as a direct result of the rising fear of the army of the dead being formed in Noxstern. Locals feel slightly more at ease with city walls high enough that no living foe could ever scale them that are also patrolled endlessly night and day by Ríocht's royal guards and the kingdom's skilled and dedicated knights.

The land is beautiful with lush rolling hills and a mild climate. However, since the kingdom is so large and incomes vary so much throughout the land, some areas are better kept than others. Even the main city has its poor areas.

Ríocht castle is the grandest in the land and could, in fact, contain a decently sized village within its walls. Ríocht is a prideful country and that fact shows in every detail around the heavily taxed kingdom.

Solais

Solais (pronounced So-lay) is a beautiful kingdom, nestled in the Western mountains. It is the home of the Eadromes.

Of all the kingdoms that have rejected Noxstern as an ally, Solais is one of only two that has not completely outlawed magic. While they have rejected the dark magic that Noxstern and its allies so readily rely on, they embrace light magic and believe that it will be an imperative tool in healing the unity of the kingdoms of Raguinia.

Solais is a kingdom that thrives on the arts and shows great passion for living life to the fullest. There is no form of currency exchanged within the city, as the Eadromes only believe in bartering between themselves. There is, however, an expansive vault that is used for trading with other kingdoms and any traveling merchants that have merchandise that could benefit the kingdom and her people.

The castle is made of a white crystal that shines brilliantly in the light of the setting sun. While there are guards at the gates to Solais, there are no guards stationed at the castle gates, as the common villagers are as welcome guests as the nobles are.

Tilarus

Tilarus (pronounced Tee-laar-us) is populated solely by the Ardanian. The particular clan in Tilarus broke off on their own in order to keep detailed records of Raguinia.

Tilarus lies far off in the Eastern mountains and is not technically a kingdom as there is no king in Tilarus, but instead a senate that collectively makes decisions for the good of the country. Likewise, there is no castle, only fortress walls surrounding the city with hidden vaults that contain libraries and records safely hidden underground.

It is extremely difficult to gain access to Tilarus as an outsider, as the Ardanian there are very protective of their records. If a pass of visitation is attained, the visitors are accompanied by an escort at all times, even in their bed chambers.

The Ardanian of this region are from a pure line and all kinds of magic are allowed, although they have no interest in taking sides in Raguinia, they only wish to observe and record all outcomes.
