Some Random Observable Facts About Your Character:Marius Salusti doesn't care much for women, finding them almost irritating. His privacy is highly guarded, in that he doesn't ever reveal much.. even to those who've known him for years. He is a Roman Citizen by birth, the son of a noble patrician. He has, at times, been muchly mistaken for The Moralist.
Personality:Marius Salusti is a very dry and almost humorless stoic. Most people do not like him, and of those who DO like him, he doesn't often like them back. He rules his home, his business affairs, and his slaves with an iron fist. He has but two House Slaves -- Agricola, an elderly fellow whom he inherited from his father's estate in Rome and brought with him to Pompeii, and Damos, whom he purchased on a whim from a Cretan auction block, and has regretted ever since! The rest of the slaves report to Agricola and labor in Marius' extensive vineyards just a mile north of Pompeii on the hilly slopes overlooking the Bay of Naples.
History:The only son of a wealthy Roman landowner, Marius Salusti inherited his father's entire estate which he sold for a hefty sum upon the elder fellow's death, and promptly moved south to the flourishing city of Pompeii. Upon his arrival ten years ago, he purchased a large parcel of land just a mile north, as well as the sprawling villa that once supposedly belonged to a Dionysian cult of Maenads. Legend says that the land was blessed with an overabundance of best-quality grapes due to the fertility rites the secret cult engaged in. And while it makes for an entertaining rumor, Marius doubts its validity. The land owes its fertility to an ancient eruption of Vesuvius nearly one thousand years ago -- long before the Trojan War, and even long before Homer's great Odyssey.
Excerpt From a Kept Journal:"Not one red Semis more will I squander on that foolish thrall of mine, who has cost me years of exasperation. I would throw him to the streets in a heartbeat, were it not for this wretched guilt he would heap upon my head like burning coals. Would that I could simply reverse time and leave him where I found him, chained to a Cretan's auction block.. so that someone else may have the dubious misfortune of having him under foot and thumb. And yet in the few times I have traveled to Rome without him, not a day goes by that he isn't in my thoughts, vexing me to no end. I don't know how he does that."
