Hi guys, Would very much appreciate help with Installation. Not clear how to proceed. Havent installed or played any Multiplayer game before.
Mick Jones has kindly replied acouple of times, but Im not so good with computer stuff and need really simple steps in plain English!

I have a 2006 ASUS Laptop with WinXP Pro, Solo T1300, 512memory and 60GB HD (and Im using the D: partition here). Im running nVID GeForce Go 7300.

Have no probs running most games inc previously playing solo games of the Blue boxed MTW Medieval Total War, Shogun, Rome and Alexander. Have now installed Gold version of MTW which includes VI and runs OK, though surprised that there doesnt appear to be a sep game play menu heading in GoldEd for the VI add on.

Ive visited the 1809 website and downloaded/saved to HD the 11 files with rar extns. But it appears they wont open with any programs already on the drives.

Do I need only some or ALL of the RAR LAB, Win Ace, Win Zip and Bit Zapper free trial prog downloads in order to start NTW on this laptop or the full versions?

Do I go to the Installation button only to set it up the first time and then each time to play do I go through the latest version at the online site button, eg NMTWI-V7, rather than start by opening MTW frm the HD and finding a NTW heading?

than from within MTW??

Regards, Boney (John R)

Hiya Boney,

As I'm about as computer literate as a Masai fish salesman all I can do is get one of the Gold Edition boys to help you out. Obviously you have seen the Gold Edition install instructions but heres a link to them just in case.

http://www.mickjones.net/1809site/mod/index.htm

Just click on install instructions and unzip the file. Meanwhile I'll fire off a few e mails and see if we can get someone on here ASAP.

Regards,

Just read through your post again Boney and realised one of your problems seems to be the unzipping business of RAR files. Even I know a bit about those so heres the lowdown.

RAR files or Zipped files as they are somethimes called are just big files packed down to make 'em manageable. You need a program to pack 'em and unpack 'em. But you only have to do it once.

I've got the free downloadable versions of Winzip and Winrar. This takes care of most 'zipped' things I ever come across. Once you have these installed then downloading the mod zipped files will result in a box asking you if you want to unzip using one of them. It will also ask if you want to save or run the unzipped file.

What I normally do is create a new folder on the desktop, ( right click on desktop, select new, folder) call it what you like, its only temporary. Then select the save option in the unzipping box and tell it to dump the unzipped files in your new folder.

Then, when its done, look in the new folder and you will see an exe. file, kinda like a little box with an arrow on top. This gizmo will install all the files you need automatically into your MTW. Once you click on it it will automatically find your main MTW folder and ask if you want to put them in there. NOW heres the question. If you aren't interested in playing medieval/viking stuff and only want Napoleonics then let it dump it all into that folder. It will overwrite the files in there and thats it. IF you want a seperate Napoleonic version of MTW/VI then you have to run the install discs twice, once for your MTW/VI game and once more into a new directory ( I call mine 1809 V3 ). So in effect you have two identical copies of MTW/VI with only the name of the folder different.

Now, when you tell the exe. programme where you want it to put the files you can steer it towards your 1809 MTW/VI folder. Now you have two versions , the standard Medieval one and your Napoleonic one. Most of us just play Napoleonics so we dont need two installs but entirely personal choice. The exe. file will whir away and replace all the files you need. If you follow MM's list above and then do the unzip bit then you shoul;d be set.
