Title: Invisionfree + Virus?

Olivia - June 13, 2009 03:52 AM (GMT)
This isn't so much "ask the admins" as "ask everyone," but.

Is Invisionfree actually safe? Has anyone else been experiencing problems?

Several times in the past... when the index page of these forums was loading, I'd get a virus/trojan warning from my virus scanner. Or my browser (IE, I don't touch FF or Safari) would be automatically redirected to a different site. I pinned the blame on the ads but I guessed it wasn't that much of a problem.

Then yesterday, as soon as I tried to go to these forums' index page, something weird happened... I lost control of the browser, and I think it got hijacked. A fake antivirus program (antivirus something pro or whatever) self-downloaded itself onto my computer and proceeded to harass me with popups/false notifications; I had to run a virus remover to get rid of it. e__e And today I found out that my browser/computer had also self-downloaded some Facebook virus and then proceeded to spam my entire friends list through the message system with virus/pron links (oh god the fail and awkward. awkwaaaaard. thankfully the links were "banned" so nothing bad happened but. the awkward too ngh).

My antivirus program is on the verge of expiring, I think. ._. It hasn't been updated in over a year and my susceptibility would make sense.

The only sites I went to in the past week or so were NeoPound, these forums/Invisionfree, Neopets, Leopets, Yahoo/Mail, Deviantart, Neotrades and their Invisionfree forums, and Wikipedia. I'm almost 100% certain it was caused by the Neopound-Invisionfree, and I was wondering if I was the only one...

I've never had any problems with the forums~
In order to get a virus, someone has to like... put it there for it be downloaded. And I don't think anyone's hacked the entire invisionfree site lately? xD

That popup you got prolly had nothing to do with that site~ I used to get those annoying pop ups on my old computer. It's caused by spyware that's already in you computer that you can get from downloading pretty much anything~ if you download music that might be the culprit.

I'm not sure if it's from this site either (nooo expert on computers by far) but I got the exact same virus you're describing. Dx I had to download four different antivirus/spyware programs and one special one to get rid of it completely. Idk if it'll happen to you but if it keeps coming back and/or messes up search engines for you PM me. I found a ton of good free virus removers just trying to get rid of it. xD;

Hearty:
I don't think so, but... I haven't been getting virus warnings for any site except for NeoPound's invisionfree, and my browser doesn't redirect itself at any other site (i.e. if I go to invisionfree sometimes I'll get sent to another site if I let it sit at the index... this might not happen if I used FF, but IE's my primary browser; what's the browser you use?)...

Wikipedia's clean, Leopets is clean, DA is clean, Neo is fairly clean, Neotrades is clean, Yahoo Mail should be clean (I didn't download anything or open non-school or non-Facebook e-mail notifications), and I'm suspicious of Invisionfree and Proboards... I went to NeoPound's invisionfree last night, when my browser suddenly died (I couldn't close it on my own, and it... sort of looked like a browser would if you held the F5 key for refresh upon refresh upon refresh). And right after that, right after I used the Task manager to close IE, my computer was assaulted with the fake antivirus program, which I had never downloaded or seen before. And that one apparently comes with a browser hijacker. OTL;

No, I don't download music. I checked my browsing history again, and the only sites I've been to this week are those I listed in the first post, plus Rhiow-Roleplay (Proboards), which has never given me any trouble. D: Invisionfree's the only one that's been acting suspicious...

Spooki:
OTL;; The... fake antivirus program? I used MBAM to get rid of that one and the "iehelper" that self-downloaded with it, so it shouldn't be a problem anymore, but we'll see.

Yugi:
It's for Firefox, right? I'll look into it, although it probably won't help me with IE... I wonder if disabling Java/script in IE would help... Thank you!

Yea, I should prolly specify next time...I haven't been on Facebook in so long to get a virus on it. I keep getting email telling me about new messages though. lol I'll reply to them one of these days~

Anyways back to the virus thing: maybe it was just because I got rid of it so late but even after I got rid of all the viruses I was still having problems. I had to download something called SmitfraudFix so search engines would stop leading to 404 pages. Dx Whatever the case, I was wondering the same thing...the only sites I had gone on the day I started having problems was this site and my school's email. :X

I've gotten the same trojan (the fake antivirus popup, to be exact) from three different sites, all with ads, so I think it might be a certain ad. :x One I got from deviantART, another I got from here, and the last one I got from Neopets. Thankfully, they were all caught by my anitvirus program, and I haven't had any more problems lately.
I generally use Firefox, by the way.

I guess just be extra cautious, and stop the ads from loading before they do. =3=

SAME HERE. D8

And I think it's the ads, not the site itself. Because a while back I got the same darned virus on DA (back before I was subscribed and no longer had ads). So I'm pretty sure it's gotta be some stupid ad. >.>

But yeah. That's annoying. Need antivirus program please. D8 (I need to have my antivirus renwed before I can get rid of the durned thing.)

I don't get viruses from here but I get them from dA all the time... And I got the fake antivirus thing. Once I get my computer back I am going to have some extra security because not that virus, but another crashed my computer e____e

Maelström - June 14, 2009 04:11 AM (GMT)
I got the fake antivirus a while ago too...
I actually would suspect the ads.

But I think DA's advertisement can get really dangerous too: that's why I got myself a subscription.

But I guess ads changes with the time, and that vriuses will be ~gone~ soon.

I skimmed through most of the replies, so if I'm repeating anything someone else has said or something- yeah whoops |D;

But I'd just like to back this topic up and say I have been getting virus warnings from the forums xAx;

I was told it was the ads, which only kind of makes me wonder.... idk, shouldn't "we" come up with a better solution than "refresh the page"? :x.... idk xB

It's getting really annoying on top of it- just about every other page I visit won't load because of a virus scare on that page (I use Safari on a MacBook, btw, so while I'm supposedly not in as high of a risk, I'm still pretty paranoid and haven't been visiting these forums as much xB!).

I seriously /just got/ what you are talking about.

Linked from here to DA.
I guess it was a DA ad maybe.

ophiaguin - June 16, 2009 02:12 AM (GMT)
I got a virus thing from here a couple of days ago.
Frankly, I'm still ticked off about it. |D

o: Do you guys, with firefox, use adblock?
I do and I don't seem to have any problems.

silvermoonfox - June 17, 2009 03:35 PM (GMT)
I'm using IE and have been having a really hard time. I have firefox, but would hate to have to use since aparently it and my OS don't get along too great (just a tad slow)

oh, and it is really more spyware/adware than a virus as it intends to get you to buy something rather than destroy your computer or reap your information. But the line between the two blurs a little

That thing that pops up and hijacks the browser, I always stop it before it downloads something (or at least I think I do, if I don't then I think my mom's job is taking care of virus troubles on her laptop) but it seems to be an ad thing, and I always think I have it happen on dA

That had just happened to me. ;^;

I was not sure what to do, so I stoped everyting and restarted.

radiokarma - June 20, 2009 02:57 AM (GMT)
that ad got me on here a few days ago, but i thought it was just my computer acting up

one of the good sides of having dial-up is that when things like this try to install crap on your computer, it takes forever. LOL

but yeah, the adblock app for firefox works wonders according to my sister. :3
