WHO? : Nick Cutler. Just Cutler or even Mr Cutler.
WHAT? : He worked as a duty solicitor in Britain. He’s got a similar role in New York, but is referred to as a public defender.

PICTURE PERFECT : His fluffy, light brown hair and smooth, clean-shaven face give him a boyish look. He sometimes hunches and sticks his hands in his pockets, which only emphasises this impression. As a result, people might underestimate him as a physical threat, as well as his knowledge and experience of the world.
Cutler tends to blend in with the crowd, until he opens his mouth. He possesses a warm and engaging voice and a slight lisp, the latter reinforcing this sense of youth. His soft Northern English accent complements his attempts to come across as charming and friendly when manipulating some unlucky individual.
He often wears a knee-length coat with a prominent lapel, and lots of different dark, expensive suits. Cutler keeps them clean and tidy whilst at work, but by the end of his shift, possesses a few undone buttons. He likes to look good, and knows that it’s a crucial way to influence those around him.
EYE COLOR : Blue. HEIGHT : 5'11". WEIGHT/BODY TYPE : A light to medium build.

WEAKNESSES: [1] He’s perhaps a little unhinged and from time to time seems on the brink of a mental breakdown, generally when his plans fail or somebody disappoints him. [2] His overconfident and ambitious nature occasionally gets him into hazardous situations, which could make him “proper dead”. [3] He isn’t very strong or powerful and avoids physical conflict. [4] He's made and continues to make many enemies because of his sarcastic and disparaging comments.
LIKES: [1] The Internet but more as a “business” tool. He’s much too suave and sophisticated to talk about his life on Twitter or Facebook. [2] Fancy wines and meals. [3] Puppets. Unlike living things, they don’t make a fuss when he pulls the strings or flings them across the room. [4] Using a posh decanter and glasses to drink blood.
DISLIKES : [1] Vampires that eat his focus groups. [2] Most vampires that have a high standing in the hierarchy, especially when they think little and/or look down on him. [3] Cutler doesn’t take much pleasure in killing humans. He kills to serve his plans and addiction to blood. [4] People that forget his name!!! > : (
GOALS : His most important, long term goal is to make history, which he hopes to attain by impressing the old ones when they arrive in New York. He thinks that Edgington is a right prick, killing that reporter on television. To achieve world domination, vampires should take a subtler approach, then strike humans when they’re at their most trusting. He hopes to win back their support by showing them something (allegedly) worse that exists in the world.
When he meets Hal again, he’ll try to coax and/or trick him back into his evil old ways. Cutler hates to admit that he misses him, yet he contradictorily wants retribution. Hal ripped away the last symbol of his humanity (his wife), so he’ll look forward to finding a way to repay him.
SO, WHAT ARE YOU LIKE? : Ordinarily, he’s sarcastic and patronising, especially around human work colleagues and vampires who’re old-fashioned in how they think and operate in the world. He’s adapted to modern day trends, as evident by his mobile phone and laptop. He knows that it’s important to appeal to the population via social media.
He doesn’t believe in taking the world by “fists and fangs”, but through kindness and gentle persuasion. He’s excellent at putting on a warm and friendly act, that can lure people into a false sense of security and make them vulnerable to his unpleasant plans. He avoids getting his hands dirty, preferring to coax others into dirtying their own, which is partly because he’s a coward. Cutler tends to mysteriously vanish at the first sign of conflict.
He’d probably argue that he wasn’t cowardly, but good at identifying his limits and picking the right fights. He’ll mock and push around the perceived weaker members of his kind, but keep his mouth shut when in the company of those who could rip off his head. He will forgo his feigned humanity, sense of self-preservation and break boundaries when motivated enough though.
He’s ambitious and arrogant, wanting to make his mark in history. Deep, deep, deep down, he resents his vampirism and feels that he’s got nothing meaningful left, except his fierce determination and goals. On the one hand, he idolises his maker (Hal York) and wants to make him proud, but on the other despises the fact that he’s dragged him into this grim supernatural world, then abandoned him.

WHAT'S HAPPENED TO YOU SO FAR?:
The human Cutler became a solicitor in 1947.
In 1950, he met Hal in prison, who’d been charged with illegal gambling. This was a ploy, so that Hal could turn him and use his skills to cover up any unlawful vampire activity.
Though addicted to blood, he tried to stay with his human wife and keep hold of his humanity. Hal “released” Cutler by killing his wife and tricking him into drinking her blood.
They became friends at some point. Hal vanished in 1955, leaving him hurt, abandoned and wondering whether he was “proper dead”.
He continued to work as a duty solicitor in Barry Island, entertaining ideas of making history. The Great Revelation and the impending presence of the old ones in New York inspired him to move overseas to see through his goal.

Cutler slipped out of the glary yellow taxi, poking a crisp, clean twenty pound, sorry, dollar note through the driver’s open window. He snatched it with a phlegmatic grunt, the flab of his hairy arm jiggling dementedly. The vampire felt as though he’d just offered a fat old ape a banana through the bars of its faeces smeared pen. That was an apt description. Humans. Monkeys the bloody lot of them.
“Keep the change as a tip,” he instructed him.
The driver gaped at the bill, his stupid, oversized mouth obstructed by a fag, spluttering its malicious sludge brown chemicals down the bustling road. He wrinkled his sweaty forehead, the ideal petri dish to breed bacteria, and you could visualise the rusty cogs crunching into life somewhere in his sluglike brain.
“Change?” he growled in his thick Bronx accent. “Your fare cost twenty bucks.”
“I know.” He turned his back on the taxi, then strolled down the street, so long, wide and grey compared to any in Britain. The ape yelled and banged on his horn, but the abrasive sounds fell in among the roar of passing cars and the occasional trilling of a pedestrian crossing.
He kept his stare fixed on the towering skyscrapers to his left, hoping to spot a pompous polished plaque bearing the name of his new organisation. A gangly teenager stood on the corner of the street, fidgeting restlessly in front of a newspaper stand. The headlines ranged from New Probe Into Edgington’s Attack, Vampire Murders Family, Baby Saves Mom From Vamp, among other hysteria induced rubbish.
Cutler scowled and shook his head, incensed by the idiotic vampire’s attempt to force their kind down the throats of humanity. It might have worked when they were still living in caves or wooden huts, but these days they had machine guns and nuclear weapons. What was stopping the monkeys from herding vampires into one place and bombing them to buggery? Subtly was the key to taking down the humans.
“Morning.” Cutler took a newspaper (New Probe Into Edgington’s Attack) and paid the boy, who mumbled his thanks. He sifted through the sheets, his chest tightening in a mix of anger and excitement. The old ones would love him once he manufactured a harmonious relationship between vampires and humans and then bam. Softly, softly, massacre monkey.
“They sure are nasty bastards.” The boy’s pubescent voice quivered and croaked through his grand thoughts. “Are you scared of them?”
He stared blankly at the teen, taking in the greasy spot puckered cheeks, the wobbly chin and the scruffy, mud splattered backs of his jeans. Cutler was almost tempted to laugh or even bare his fangs, but instead, he smiled in a sickening saccharine way, his blue eyes crinkling at the corners convincingly.
“I’m not scared of them. Why? Because they’re not the worse things going bump in the night.”
“Oh you’d just think I was crazy.” Cutler waved dismissively, then started to stride back down the street. Several yards from the stand, he paused to call over his shoulder: “Keep an eye on the front pages of your newspapers!”
