It was never, never a good idea to call upon Lucifer. He didn’t necessarily appreciate the draw of a summoning spell or the force behind it as he was hauled from one place to another for the sake of someone else’s purposes. A lot of people had it all wrong, but it seemed that there were a few that did check and happened to do their homework a little better. There was no real regard to how busy he might have been; the world wasn’t going to end itself, after all. As much as he wouldn’t be surprised if humanity crumbled and destroyed itself, he had waited too long and had too much time to plot and seethe in the cage before that he had no intention of being a bystander to the fall of humanity. No, he wanted to be the hand that caused it—to put them in their proper place, once and for all. Of course, had he been in the middle of anything that was too central to his plans, he would have taken it out on the one that summoned him without hesitation. It was almost suicide. And as sparked as he often was with curiosity when it happened, it didn’t mean that he wouldn’t shove his fist through whoever had done it and make a mess of their blood on the floor at their feet. Luckily for whoever did it this time, he had only just finished what needed to be said to a group of demons that he had sent in a structured strike against a few of the disloyal cockroaches that had forgotten that with Lucifer back, they wouldn’t be allotted to live much longer after their run to Crowley’s side after he had been shoved back in the cage. Disloyal demons were moronic, at best.

It seemed to slip their mind the strength that he had or who had created them in the first place. Just because he was tossed unceremoniously back into the pit by a Winchester didn’t mean that he wasn’t going to return. Lucifer was never done plotting his escape and unless he was dead (which he could ensure that wasn’t happening), there would always be a way out of that cage. Lucifer wasn’t going to be locked in forever and this time, it hadn’t been long at all. He doubted that it had been even close to worth the effort. They signed death warrants, one by one. Except for Crowley, who had something worse than death hanging over his head. Now, what his plans were for demons at the end of the road; well that wasn’t any of their business anyway. As their creator, he didn’t have to care about them at the same time. They were servants; a means to an end. That was all. A few loyal ones were deserving enough not to be quite as likely to be used up as collateral damage. He did need them, after all. An army from Hell was a little necessary. Not to mention, he needed their blood to keep his vessel from burning completely through. It couldn’t contain his power alone and even with the demon blood it had started to show signs of wear and tear yet again. There was still plenty of time on the clock for this vessel, of course, Nick probably wished by now that he hadn’t had any time left at all. Lucifer had brought him back again for this. Once through was bad enough. But, if Lucifer had anything to say about it, this was the last time. He would have Sam Winchester again. The pull of the summoning ritual forced him into an abandoned building; the type that probably rarely, if ever saw human life inside. Not that he expected to be summoned in the middle of a bustling area or anything like that. He barely gave the building a second glance, really, before his eyes snapped straight to the one that brought him there to begin with. He wasn’t sure if it was really all that interesting to see that face. It was, however, an interesting thing that Wolfram & Hart had done to one person. “You had better have a good reason for this.” Simple as that.

There was nothing that irritated Cain more than someone stepping on his toes and, right now, two persons were constantly stepping on his toes, being a nuisance which he wanted to deal with urgently. One of the two persons was Wesley but it was a little complicated dealing with him, considering the fact that the two of them were faces of the same coin, so to say. With respect to him, Cain could only do what he had done so far: be as vicious as possible, do all the amoral things that would have made Wesley shudder in horror, enjoy all those little aspects of life which Wesley no longer could enjoy because he was lacking a solid state. Wesley's much beloved whiskey, human contact – Cain could have it all and he had it all in plenty. It was a pity that Wesley could not remember all the things Cain did while he was wearing his face but, in a way, it made things equally interesting and twisted to know that he couldn't know what had happened, that he was left wondering, imagining and dreading; that each passing day he asked himself how many bodies had been added to the count of victims. Such an interesting addition to their duality, the metaphorical wall that allowed for Wesley's thoughts and memories to slip into Cain's mind but stopped the reverse from happening.

Such anger it made him feel to know that someone had tampered with that mechanism and allowed Wesley to block certain memories and thoughts from him as well. The second nuisance, the one responsible for this, was Lucifer. The meeting with the devil, which the Senior Partners approved of, was the point where things didn't make much sense. Cain could remember Wesley discussing everything that the Wolf, the Ram and the Hart had agreed to; he could also remember the meeting being inconclusive. So far, so good. Except that, since then, there were gaps in Wesley's thoughts, black areas past which Cain couldn't see and, upon careful replying of the memories of the meeting with Lucifer, Cain realized that magic was woven all around it, a magic so different and so perfect that not even he knew where and how to begin undoing it.

Cain's pride was too big to accept the fact that someone could have intruded into his consciousness and blocked something from him. He was also too curious as to what those blocked memories and thoughts consisted in and this curiosity, in combination with the pride and arrogance, lead him to take the decision of summoning Lucifer himself to answer all of his questions. He went to an abandoned building – the city didn't lack those – where he performed the summoning ritual. When Wesley had done it, he had failed. Cain, however, had used a more powerful one, so failure was not an option. A small smirk tugged at the corners of his lips when Lucifer made his appearance into the building. His gaze held Lucifer's, calm and unflinching. ”Straight to the point, I see... You know, I had thought about putting up a show and making you think I was Wesley in order to learn what I needed to learn but, since you cut right to the chase, I am going to do the same”, Cain replied. ”You know who or what I am, don't you? You owe me an explanation.”

Lucifer didn’t like having his strings pulled. But, come on, who actually enjoyed that? He wasn’t there to be told what to do or tugged around by anyone’s whim. He was often too powerful for that. But, there were ways to restrain him and ways to summon him. There always had been. He was still an angel, after all, with the same weaknesses that they were run by. He didn’t appreciate being pulled where someone wanted him, unless it was also by his choice that he showed. Of course, it rarely happened that he appeared of his free will when someone wanted him to. Lucifer wasn’t there to assist humans in the least. He wanted to eradicate them, not make friendly. Most weren’t going to summon or pray to Lucifer for help. Although, he did hear prayers of those that dared to, but he didn’t answer them. Hearing the prayer of some Satanist didn’t appeal to him in the least bit. And there was no human that would legitimately call for him, knowing what he wanted to do with them. This was no human; however, it had been or was part of what had been. Honestly, he was a little bit confused at the specifics of it. At the same time, it hadn’t been something that he felt like spending a lot of time or energy on to figure out. He had it down well enough to know what Wolfram & Hart had done with their little employee. And what a pain it must have been and obviously was to be bound. Still, he didn’t appreciate being summoned forth, especially when it was a spell strong enough that he couldn’t resist it. He could have tried to and could have pulled against it, but it was enough to take hold and bring him here whether he liked it or not. That didn’t put him in the best of moods and never did. He would like to hear anyone claim that they liked to be summoned regardless of what they might have wanted. Most would oppose vehemently, but at least Lucifer didn’t go on the offense quickly. Instead, he waited to see what it was that he wanted.

Oh, he was well aware that Cain couldn’t access the memories or thoughts of the night that he had spoken with Wesley. He made sure that only one creature could see that and that was Wesley himself. Lucifer understood the art of illusion and as an archangel had a lot of power to bend reality at his disposal. The things he could make a person see or experience were unimaginable, at best. Though, he didn’t spend a lot of time exploring that realm. It wasn’t something that he cared to keep himself busy with. But, when it was useful, he utilized it. “I don’t know which would be stupider, summoning me or believing that you could fool me.” Lucifer noted, because he wasn’t so easy to get the one up on. He was lucky that he saw through before he tried to trick him, because he wouldn’t have accepted that. He didn’t want to be played for the fool and by no means was he going to take orders. At his brash statement, Lucifer outwardly scoffed. “I owe you? I think you’ll find I owe no one nothing, most importantly, you.” He reminded him and took a step forward. There was a cruelty that burned behind his vessel’s blue gaze, a frustration with the gumption of Cain. “Give me a good reason why I need to explain anything to you and I’ll consider not tearing you to pieces.” Hostile already. Now, he wasn't really going to react so violently quickly. And his voice did remain calm, but with a threatening tone that couldn’t be drawn out. But, he made a mistake in saying that he owed him anything at all. Lucifer owed no one. Honestly, he didn’t know what went through anyone’s head when it came to addressing him. And Lucifer, well, it was wrong not to believe his reputation for having pride. Because, he had plenty and when he felt like it was being affronted, well, things didn’t look so great for the offender.

“I don’t know which would be stupider, summoning me or believing that you could fool me.”

Cain saw no reasons why he could not throw Lucifer a cold glare at the statement, in spite of the fact that he was well aware of the fact that the Devil would not be too pleased with being summoned and would make his displeasure unknown in a very poignant manner. Running over the fabricated memories which Lucifer had created about the meeting between him and Wesley, Cain could tell that the fallen angel had a great ego and thought highly of himself. The issue was that Cain's ego was also a great one and he also considered himself to be great and powerful, daring to compare his abilities to those of the angel that defied his maker and was banished from paradise. Lucifer implying that he was stupid for having considered the possibility of fooling him did no honour to his great ego and Cain was not going to let this insult slip away, although he was not going to react to it immediately – not in a violent manner, at least. ”Oh, it was stupid summoning you?”, Cain questioned, arching a brow. ”I needed to talk to you and I don't recall you leaving a calling card when you last met with a representative of Wolfram and Hart.” The Liaison wasted no time in bringing up the topic that interested him, albeit in an indirect manner for the time being. He suspected, however, that Lucifer was intelligent enough to imagine that the reason why he had been summoned had everything to do with the little meeting which he had with the pet-ghost of the Senior Partners.

A chuckle left Cain's lips as Lucifer spoke again and he also took a step forward, closer to the Devil, not feeling intimidated by his presence or his foul mood. Was that look in Lucifer's eyes – in his human shell's eyes – supposed to make him quiver and repent for summoning him? If it was, then it really failed at having the desired effect, as it only served to make Cain feel more irritated with the Devil than he already was. ”I suppose that there is a possibility that our definitions of “owing” are very different. From where I stand, I consider that someone that messes with memories in which only I have the right to mingle is very much indebted to me”, Cain retorted, his tone making his own frustration very clear. ”Did you really imagine that no one would see your magic?” The question said it all: the magic had been but it had not been seen through. Someone was more skilled than the Senior Partners and the warlocks in their service – an unacceptable concept and an intolerable situation. The problem was going to be solved in a matter of minutes or hours, Cain was confident in his ability to persuade Lucifer to lift whatever spell he had put on Wesley's mind. Of course, for Cain, persuasion did not exclude the use of violence – quite on the contrary. ”Tearing me to pieces?” The Liaison laughed at the Devil's words. ”I believe you have not done your homework, Lucifer. I am not a mere human, to cower in front of your threats.” He took another couple of steps closer to Lucifer. ”I have hurt creatures that claimed to be more powerful than you, Lucifer. That should be a good enough reason for you to quit threatening me and tell me what you and Casper are hiding from me and my Masters.” It was obvious in the tone of Cain's voice that he did not utter a mere request, but a threat in its own right.

As Cain questioned the stupidity that Lucifer assigned him, he glanced down at his hands, studying his nails as if they were more interesting than what the man had to say. Actually, they very much were and he smirked to himself, but didn’t show an ounce of humor. Instead, he looked up, dropped his hand and lifted his eyebrows in response to him. “Perhaps you should’ve taken it as a sign. I didn’t want to talk to you.” Lucifer contacted who he liked, when he wanted. He didn’t wait around to be called and he didn’t owe anyone. If he wanted to show, he would and if he felt compelled to show up, then that was what he’d do. He had no choice when he was summoned this way and hence the frustration with the entire scene. He thought that he had too much nerve to fit him. Lucifer read into that arrogance and it wasn’t a rare trait nowadays, it seemed. There were a lot of egos clashing and people who thought themselves better than the rest. He found nothing about Cain better than him. The Morningstar looked at him as lowly as he would any other human, even knowing his power and his station above an average person. He might be able to strike fear into them or other creatures, but not to Lucifer. There were very few that could cause him any amount of fear and worry and this man wasn’t amongst those that could do it. All that happened here was that he felt the annoyance build up inside of him and the idea that he needed to be taken down a few pegs. There was so much mention out there of his own pride and yet it never ceased to amaze him how many could rival that or go even beyond. Not that Lucifer didn’t often try to bring in forces that were even stronger than him. He had bound Death once, after all, a horseman that was much older and stronger than the archangel would ever be. But, Lucifer thought he had all of the reason to feel his pride strongly and to be comfortable in what he was capable of. He had proved it over and over. And yes, he had been beaten once, by his own vessel, but that was then and Lucifer learned from his mistakes. Others should have done the same, if he let them live beyond their initial mistake.

“And unfortunately for you, I couldn’t care less how you define it.” Lucifer shrugged. No, he wasn’t indebted to him. He was indebted to no one. Simply because he didn’t like what he had done was no reason for him to give up the information. And he wasn’t about to announce it when he was dealing with someone this bold. It had been different when Illyria came asking—one, because she hadn’t forcibly summoned him but went out of her way to find him. And two, because there was a concern in what kind of strength she possessed when compared to his own. And not to mention, her knowing what had been discussed didn’t necessarily cause any ill effect. With Cain, he felt no need to answer to him or any reason why he would so much as breathe a word of an answer that he wanted. “Frankly?” He asked and took a step forward, arms folding. “I didn’t care. You didn’t see what went on beyond it and that’s really all that matters.” There were plenty of creatures that could see through the illusion, or at the very least see that it was an illusion even if they couldn’t see beyond it. Lucifer wasn’t in doubt of that. He knew it was strong and that he had been able to give the impression of a completely different conversation, but that didn’t mean that there were those that wouldn’t believe something else happened or would be aware of what he had done. Still, it didn’t mean he was going to answer to him or feel as though he had been one upped. He hadn’t been. “If only humans were the only ones I could slaughter with a snap of my fingers.” He was a creature that could take out an entire room full of gods, for crying out loud. He didn’t care if he was above a human. He was an archangel. Humans weren’t the only creature he stood above. “Funny how I’ve hurt them too.” Claiming to be stronger meant little to him. “Actually, it’s a good reason to put you in your place and not answer a single question you have.”

“Perhaps you should’ve taken it as a sign. I didn’t want to talk to you.”

”A sign?”, Cain repeated Lucifer's words. ”Perhaps you should have made it a little more obvious, then. You cannot expect a busy man like myself to waste his precious time analyzing subtleties.” Well, spotting signs and interpreting them was part of what he did in his service at Wolfram and Hart, however the whole topic of Lucifer and his meeting with the pathetic ghost was one that irked the Liaison too much for him to be willing to dwell on anything past the fact that the Devil had done something he should have never done. ”Just to be clear on one point which might put a quicker end to this meeting: which you are you referring to? If you mean me, then I am afraid that you are out of luck, as I plan to get some answers out of you today. If you mean Wesley, then I might just be satisfied with the idea that you not wanting to talk to him again means the two of you have not concocted some secret plan and I will go away.” Cain imagined that if the pathetic Casper and the Devil had struck some kind of deal, the latter would want to keep tabs on the former, to meet with him from time to time and reassure himself that the ghost would do whatever it was supposed to do. He also imagined that Lucifer might be very inclined to give him the answer which might get this unpleasant meeting done with earlier, therefore he had no intention whatsoever to do as he told and leave, in case he was told that Lucifer did not want to hear from Wesley again.

”Is that supposed to hurt me?”, Cain questioned when Lucifer stated that he could care less about his definition of being owed something. The Liaison could care less for the fact that Lucifer was highly annoyed with having summoned here so, in a way, he could say that they were even. As the Devil advanced on him, Cain folded his arms in front of his chest, his eyes narrowing down on the fallen angel. ”Yes, that really matters”, Cain agreed. ”As I already said, Lucifer, me and my Masters are the only ones who are allowed to mess with Wyndam-Pryce's memories. I advise that you lift whatever spells prevents us from seeing what really happened that night, or else...” He left the threat hanging in the air and took another step closer. ”Is that supposed to frighten me? I can slaughter humans, and not only, with a snap of my fingers as well.” Cain considered himself to be close to par with the Devil in terms of strength and cruelty – unreasonably arrogant, a common treat for most of the employees of Wolfram and Hart. ”Put me in my place?” Cain laughed. ”Do tell me, Lucifer, what do you think my place is?” It was becoming clear to Cain that this meeting between the two of them would not end well and he was preparing himself for things to take a nasty turn at any moment. Fortunately, the summoning ritual had not drained too much of his energy, therefore Cain was confident that he would be an worthy opponent to Lucifer for quite a long time. The Liaison thought that it was high time for someone to put the Devil in his place and he wanted to be the one to do it.

“Subtleties?” Lucifer’s response came out as half of a chuckle and the other half a scoff. If that was subtle, then he would hate to see what it took to be right out in the open with him. If someone hid themselves, it meant that they didn’t want to make it their business. It was as simple as that and Lucifer failed to see how he should feel obligated to share anything with him. Lucifer did as he wanted. He answered to no one, especially not precious pets of Wolfram & Hart. In all honesty, he couldn’t have cared less about what he wanted and it took all of his effort not to want to disappear then and there. “Did you need a parade and maybe a banner to let you know?” The archangel mocked, because he was starting to question the man’s intelligence, not to mention his common sense. Though, to be fair, it was how he looked at most humans. Most weren’t worthy of the ground they stepped on. Listening to Cain, Lucifer tapped his chin, as if in thought, although he needed to make none on the matter. “And which answer do you think I’d be more inclined to give you?” He asked, dropping his hand and giving the man a curious look. Really, he couldn’t be so stupid as to ask that question. The obvious answer was that he didn’t want to talk to the one in front of him and if he had been scheming, then he wasn’t going to tell him. “If I didn’t tell you the first time, I won’t tell you the second. Are you catching on or do I need to break it down more for you?” He asked, and hopefully, he would understand just how willing he wasn’t to talk to him.

“Don’t worry, you’ll know when I try to hurt you.” Lucifer assured him. The truth of the matter was that he didn’t care about what he wanted or what he knew. All that he cared about was getting out of this situation. And well, now, putting Cain down a few pegs. Really, to summon him and demand answers was one of the worst choices he could have made. Lucifer wasn’t one that liked to be pulled around by his strings. Well no one was, but Lucifer had the power to do something about it. “Humans can slaughter humans. I’ve watched stronger die, creatures that, comparatively, make you nothing more than a bumbling infant.” He shrugged, speaking completely nonchalant, as if he was describing the weather. He wasn’t sure what made him think that he was anywhere close to the nature of a creature billions of years older than he was. Again, Lucifer couldn’t help but wonder how it was him that had such a bad reputation for being prideful. Obviously, there were those that surpassed him again and again. The arrogance radiating off of this one was a little amusing. Pathetic, yes, but amusing too. Lucifer didn’t even think to give him credit for it, because it wasn’t smart. It was ridiculous. “In simple terms? Out of my way.” Lucifer couldn’t have cared less what he did with his time or who he worked for. All that he wanted was for him to step aside and learn his place, which was below him, to be upfront about it. Lucifer put no one above himself. Well, no one aside his Father and even then, Lucifer wasn’t about to discuss where he fell on that line. What wasn’t above him was the one in front of him. “And we can either do that with you stepping aside, or—well, I’ll let you use your imagination.” A smirk stretched against the corners of his lips at the final remark, the menace practically glittering in his eyes. Oh, he could give him a vivid description if he wanted, which would have plenty of details of how much agony he could leave him writhing in, but he thought the vague threat was enough. He wanted nothing good to come of this. He wanted to see his pain and relish in it. And honestly, it was his own fault for summoning him to begin with.

The more they were talking, the more obvious it was becoming to Cain that this little meeting of his with the Devil himself could only end badly. Of course, he never thought that Lucifer would answer his question straight away, no; he merely imagined that the dialogue would go a little differently than it was, that the outcast angel would not have the audacity to mock him the way he did. The Liaison believed that the Devil would know better than to ridicule him but it seemed that he had been wrong. The first response to the new mockery was a cold glare cast towards Lucifer and it was hard not to wish to add a little of his magic into that look and use it to hurt the creature who was not showing him the respect he thought he was owed. For the moment, however, Cain was going to refrain from using violence against Lucifer. For the moment. There was absolutely no guarantee that he would maintain his opinion for the rest of the meeting. ”It might work for the other creatures you deal with but it is a little too flashy for my taste”, Cain replied, well aware of the fact that his words lacked any kind of sting and would leave Lucifer completely indifferent. Being aware of it, of course, only served to further add to the frustration he already felt. As did the fact that Lucifer was answering his question with yet another question. The look on Cain's face did not become any friendlier upon hearing it. ”I am afraid that my mind reading skills are slightly rusty”, was the Liaison's reply to the first question. In response to the other question, he began with another glare, his eyes a little darker than usual, reflecting all of that dark magic that was practically boiling inside of him, pushing under the surface, making Cain itch to use his powers on the Devil. ”Contrary to what you believe, I am not an idiot. Also, I am more stubborn than you imagine and I will get the answer I need.” His voice was full of confidence and determination, slight arrogance even.

“Don’t worry, you’ll know when I try to hurt you.”

”What a delightful threat”, Cain commented, sarcasm sipping in the tone of his voice. Considering the Devil's earlier comment about his lack of responsiveness to subtleties, the Liaison was determined to prove to him that he was quite well aware of the nuances and the little implications behind his words. ”Too bad it is impossible to hurt me”, he added with an arrogant smirk on his face. Cain was not made from flesh and bones, like the human he appeared to be. It would have taken very powerful magic for someone to be able to cause the smallest of harms to him and Cain was convinced that his own magic was strong enough to help him defend himself against anyone that might try to use such magic against him. Although Lucifer carried on with his defying words, Cain stepped even closer to him, his struggle to contain his rage becoming stronger by every second that was ticking by. By the time the Devil finished speaking, Cain was tapping his chin thoughtfully, as if he was seriously considering the choices which the fallen angel had presented him with. ”Our of your way, you say...” His voice trailed off and the Liaison chuckled as if he had just heard the most ridiculous comment someone could have made. ”I am afraid that my imagination is not helping me at the moment and I have no intention of stepping aside.” Although he noticed the menacing glint in Lucifer's eyes, not a muscle of Cain's body flinched. The only change was in his own eyes, which became just as menacing as the Devil's. ”Perhaps you could do an exercise of imagination in regards to the ways in which I might get an answer out of you?”, Cain threatened. ”I am not moving until I find out what happened that night between you and Wesley Wyndam-Pryce.”
