BUT HOW WOULD I KNOW?

PICTURE PERFECT : For all intensive purposes, Cassandra is possibly the most harmless looking predator there is. At four feet in height Cassandra doesn’t look like much of a threat. With her round face and soft features, it’s hard to believe that Cassandra is two millennia old. To the average person, Cassandra looks like your average ten-year-old: little, young and occasionally cute as all heck. Her long brown hair is perfectly straight, having been the same length for the past two millennia. She prefers to wear it down, occasionally pulling it back into a pony tail. When she’s out hunting, Cassandra will plait her hair to keep it from getting into her food. The most distinguishing feature about Cassandra is her eyes. They look too old for her childlike face. Style and Cassandra isn’t terribly difficult. Plain t-shirts and loose skirts make up most of her wardrobe, or whatever her ‘father’ buys for her. Cassandra really isn’t fussed. She likes to be comfy, doesn’t really care much about fashion. She’s been around too long to care.

GOALS : Cassandra’s main goal is to see all vampire races come together as one. She hates the elitism of her kind and hopes to change this through the Authority. In the short term, she longs to find Julia and mend their relationship.

SO, WHAT ARE YOU LIKE? : Shy by nature, Cassandra tends to keep to the background in social situations. She learnt long ago that people tend to respond better to an adult presence rather than that of a ‘child’, so Cassandra lets the ‘adults’ in her life take charge. Even when she’s known someone for a while, Cassandra will still remain in the background, preferring to keep to herself. She only really opens up when she’s hanging around with children her own ‘age’. Cassandra likes to watch people, particularly when it comes to changing trends and opinions. Having been around for so long, Cassandra has seen the rise and fall of many different ideologies and theories. She doesn’t like to meddle in human affairs. Humans are so much more interesting when left to their own devices and Cassandra believes that no one would listen to her even if she tried. She will, however, meddle in the affairs of vampires. Vampires, after all, are her people now and she believes it is her duty as an old vampire to help them.

Romance and sex is something completely alien to Cassandra. Due to the fact she looks like a child, Cassandra has long ago accepted the fact she will never have a functioning relationship with a man. Not that she’s really after one, but she occasionally feels a pang of jealously when one of her children finds a lover. To the few friends she has, Cassandra is exceptionally loyal. She’s especially protective of those friends she has who are ‘her own age’. She will literally murder anyone who abuses one of her child friends. Cassandra believes that the innocence of childhood is sacred and she will do anything to preserve that. She still cares for many of her fledglings and tries to keep track of all of them. As she never formally released any of them, Cassandra still has contact with them all.

WHAT'S HAPPENED TO YOU SO FAR?:
The child who would become Cassandra was born over two millennia ago in Britania. She was the product of an affair between General Valerian Gaius and a Celtic druidess he had taken as a slave called Losair. Valerian kept Losair in his tent and waited until the baby was born before giving her to his men. Once this was done, Valerian took the child with him back to Rome. Losair was stricken when Valerian took her child, taking her own lifer days after Valerian left for Rome. The child, named Varleia Theodora, was smuggled into the city and passed off as the child of Valerian’s wife. Theodora would be raised as a child of her father’s house, looked after by a horde of slave-nannies and wet nurses. Claudia, Valerian’s wife, refused to have anything to do with the bastard child and Valerian the Younger (the legitimate son) refused to acknowledge the child as his sibling. Valeria’s childhood was good by Roman standards. She learnt how to read and write, how to sing and how to weave. However, Theodora was also a sickly child. She was constantly weak, spending days resting in bed to build up her strength. In her tenth year of life, Theodora took a turn for the worst. She got sicker with each passing day, unable to eat or sleep without being in pain. Terrified, Valerian turned from conventional Roman medicine and sought the advice of a man who practiced druidic healing methods. The man would only see patients at night and his methods were considered to be, at best, radical. Valerian would take his daughter to see the healer, known as Ajax, five times before he offered the ‘special’ treatment. Desperate, Valerian agreed on behalf of his daughter and Ajax turned the little girl into a vampire.

It wasn’t until the morning following her return home that Valerian understood what he had done. His daughter shied away from the sun and insisted on sleeping in the dank wine cellar. When he tried to move her to her bed, her flesh began to burn the minute he took her into the sunlight. Unsure of what to do, Valerian returned his sleeping child to the cellar. Try as he might, Valerian could not fathom what Ajax had done to her. He had never seen anything like it before. When some of the slaves were found dead, their bodies drained of blood, Valerian began to suspect dark magic was afoot. Theodora would continue to feed off slaves for nine months until Ajax came to her father’s villa to collect the little girl. When Ajax brought Theodora out of the cellar she was kept in, it was to discover her father and his wife and son were dead. It wasn’t until a decade had passed before Theodora was told Ajax had murdered her father.

For the next few centuries, Theodora would travel around with Ajax. By this stage Ajax had started referring to Theodora as Cassandra, telling her that it was the name of the daughter her himself had lost. They travelled around the Roman Empire for years, only settling in a certain place for five or six years before moving on. After almost seven centuries had passed, Ajax began to grow weary of Cassandra. He sought to find the child a guardian so she would be able to survive on her own. Ajax would search for suitable candidates and Cassandra would turn them. It wasn’t until the third candidate, a woman called Julia, that Ajax was ready to leave Cassandra. He remained with the two women for a week, helping Julia grow accustomed to her new vampiric life. A month after Ajax left, Cassandra and Julia travelled through Africa before eventually choosing to settle in Judea around the turn of the millennium.

They were living in Jerusalem when Cassandra saw a handsome soldier called Elias of Acre wandering the streets. With the impulsiveness of a child, Cassandra lured the older man to the room she and Julia were renting and turned him. For a while she felt their little family needed a ‘father’ and Elias seemed the perfect candidate. Unfortunately, Elias didn’t take to the vampiric life. For all the two centuries he was with them, Elias fought and argued with Julia, claiming that it was wrong for Cassandra to even exist. He left them in 1100, finding a progeny of his own to care for. Fearing that Elias would try and attack them, Julia fled with Cassandra to Europe.

During their travels in Europe, Cassandra and Julia would build a small coven around them, made up of fledglings Cassandra turned. Over time some of the young vampires would leave, only to be replaced by new fledglings. At any one time, the coven could include ten to thirty vampires.

Despite her many years, Cassandra was still in many ways the little girl she had been when she was alive. It was easy for Julia to manipulate the older vampire into making more and more fledglings. She believed that vampires were the true dominant species of the earth and wanted to create a vampire army to take over the world with. It wasn’t until the middle of the 14th century that Cassandra realised what Julia had been doing. Realising that if she was being used for what she thought of as an ‘evil plot’, Cassandra left Julia’s coven with the aid of her most recent progeny; a man and woman who had only been married a few hours before they were turned. She would remain with the couple, Felix and Daphne Fate, until the 1800’s. Posing as a noble family, the Fate’s travelled around Europe and Asia, avoiding any wars or problems that might cause problems in the long run. Throughout their travels, Cassandra learnt everything Julia had hidden from her. This included the social hierarchy of their species. She also learnt of the rest of the supernatural world, becoming quite knowledgeable on the subject. In 1822, while visiting friends in Bombay, Felix and Daphne were captured and killed by hunters. Alone, frightened and knowing she couldn’t survive without a guardian, Cassandra began to search for her new ‘parent’. Six months later Cassandra met Nikhil Kapoor; a homeless beggar with no future. She watched him for a few weeks, deciding he would at least suffice as a guardian until a better one could be found. She turned him quickly, cleaning him up before fleeing to Dehli. They remained in Dehli for a few years, during which time Nikhil proved to be a more than competent guardian.

The turn of the century found the pair living in the slums of Hong Kong. They stuck out like a sore thumb, but they were able to make it work. Nikhil kept her from turning anyone else,

They immigrated to America in 1920, after spending time in Nepal. They explored the country before settling in New York in the 1950’s. Since then, Cassandra and Nikhil have made a life for themselves in New York. They thrived in New York, even buying an apartment block and converting the basement into a home. Nikhil found and paid for a human to look after the building for them and collect rent from tenants from the floors above. When the Great Revelation occurred, Cassandra found it easier to go about her business when she didn’t have to necessarily hide what she was. However, the whole looking ten thing would always be a problem. She’s sort of mainstreaming, although she will only consent to drink synthetic blood when she’s desperate. Cassandra still hunts, but she tries to mostly feed from willing donors. Russell Edgington’s public display of madness was hard to miss, and despite the fact she knows he is a crazy extremist, she doesn’t hate him. Not much at any rate. She finds it hard to hate a man her maker once mentioned as ‘Uncle Russell’ when talking about vampires she could go to for help when he eventually left her.
