ILLYRIA (Winifred ‘Fred’ Burkle) Angel | Old One | Primordium Era | Not entirely applicable | Played By: Amy Acker
as the light in you went dark I SAW YOU TURN TO SHADOW THIS WAS YOUR CHOICE
WHO? : Illyria. Illyria the Merciless. WHAT? : Illyria passes her time in this world by offering aide to the Angel Investigations team. She felt without purpose and lost after learning of the destruction of her army, and even more so after losing a great deal of her powers after her resurrection. She still contemplates ways in which either might be regained, but this is offset by a growing empathy and something akin to human emotions that she is struggling with the concept of possessing.
i've gotta save my blood FROM ALL THAT YOU’VE BROKEN BROKEN PIECES OF ME
PICTURE PERFECT : Despite the fact that Illyria has been stripped of her army, and of (arguably) the surplus of her abilities, she still approaches life and those around her as if she is a greater being, a powerful demon, and one possessed of great strength and prowess. She demands respect or subservience from those around her and generally speaks in a way that implies a full expectation of being listened to and thus obeyed. She strides, rather than strolling or walking, and moves with an assuredness that belies her confidence easily. She rarely conceals her now natural shape, which is that of the blue eyed, blue haired, armored Illyria, seeing no reason to conceal her true nature out of fear or concern for what other people might think. Her movements are at times alien even after several months within the shape of a human coil, and she has a tendency to stop abruptly, to make exertions of superhuman strength or agility without thought, and tilts her head to the side frequently when perplexed by a human sentiment or colloquial terminology. She does not like being touched, and does not often touch others unless it is in combat, though she has somewhat learned restraint when said combat is a sparring match and not a full on combat situation.
EYE COLOR : Cerulean blue, almost neon or electric blue with enlarged irises. HEIGHT : 5’8” WEIGHT/BODY TYPE : 120 lbs. ; tall and lean, she is deceptively slender and most would not expect her to have the strength that her body possesses.
too late now to stop the process A THOUSAND SHARDS OF GLASS YOU PUSHED BENEATH MY SKIN
POWERS & LIMITATIONS:
Superhuman strength, agility, reflexes, stamina and near-invulnerability; While this is one of the abilities that was affected by the Mutari generator, these were by far the least affected. Her physical prowess is still far above human capacity and she can handle hardly any demons and vampires without hardly any effort. There are the rare exceptions, of course, but not many.
Enhanced Senses; Another set of powers that were not affected much, Illyria possesses heightened senses. She can hear and smell and feel, even through the armor that is an extension of her self and powers easily on par with a vampire’s.
Shapeshifting; It is known that she can assume the form of her shell, Winifred Burkle, with varying outfits or hairstyles, etc. Even after the depletion of her power, this power remains undiminished, though she does not make use of it often.
Time manipulation; This is an ability that has been entirely hampered by the draining of her powers, though she believes that this is a temporary affectation. At full power, she was capable of dramatically slowing down the world around her, choosing whom to affect.
Interdimensional travel; Another ability that seems to have been nullified by the Mutari generator, Illyria was once capable of traveling through multiple dimensions, existing in many places and times and forms at once. While this ability was hampered somewhat before her powers were drained, she was still capable of opening a portal to any single dimension to travel through with ease.
Plant communication; This was an ability that was more apparent in the days when the world was covered in plants, and earth spirits, and elementals and celestials, but Illyria possessed an ability to communicate with the spirits of the world in their most primal forms. This is another power that has been nullified.
Sense species; An unaffected ability, she is capable of determining the state of a person, whether they are human or not, and to identify species with those that she had or has had experience with.
Empathy; Illyria is an empathy, a power that once served her well to sense the fear and worship from the world of her servants, but more often than not now only causes her discomfort and displeasure. She occasionally finds it useful in dealing or bargaining with those around her.
Combat (Specialty: Hand to Hand); Conquering and warfare are instinctive and embedded parts of Illyria’s nature, and they have become corporeal in a mastery of hand to hand and within reason melee and armed combat that is a culmination of most any form of martial arts that would spring into man’s resume over the millennium.
Lore & Knowledge (Supernatural); While she does have access to the knowledge of the supernatural that exist in her shell’s memories, she has millennia of experience and information that she gathered during her time as God-King and ruler of the world and universe.
Scientific Knowledge (Physics); The possession of the ‘spark’ as she calls it of Winifred’s memories still exists inside of her, though they are difficult for her to put in order or make sense of, at times. She does have all of the knowledge of dimensions, of physics and scientific formulae that Fred possessed, something of an irony in her opinion given her own ability to create and manipulate portals.
Social etiquette; Despite the fact that she has been well versed in the ways of this world, the world history, facts and figures, there is still much that she does not understand nor care to of the way the world works in terms of social interactions. It causes difficulties for her, but she has yet to find a way to alleviate it.
Diminished power; She had less than her own Old One abilities when she was first reincarnated, but after the incident with the Multari generator, she has even less than what she had upon awakening. This is a source of great aggravation to her and she still seeks to find a way to remedy this.
Wesley; She felt some remnant of a connection between the remnants of her shell and Wesley, but these continuing ties of emotion is causing extreme difficulties to her. She felt grief and rage at his loss and she suspects that these are not only her shell’s bonds any longer. This troubles her as it shows a weakness on her part and yet she does not know how to combat them or break the ties, especially as Wes is her link to this world and has served as her guide to explain to her how this world works.
Human emotions; She does not understand them, even with the memories of Fred that reside in the sparks. She cannot stand the feel of them, the smell of them, at times they are overwhelming and chaos that rushes down on her like a tsunami. Still, she experiences them, odd echoes of them inside of her, and she finds this just as painful, just as disdainful in herself as it is in others.
Fighting; Illyria enjoys the thrill of combat and conquest, most specifically because it allows her to conquest others, even if only on a one on one basis. She relishes proving herself better than others, and testing for the weaknesses of those that she spars or fights against.
Open spaces; She much prefers being in the outdoors, despite the fact that it is still a confinement in comparison to the existence that she used to know, she enjoys the sun, the stars, the feel of the wind against her skin.
Power; Having once been the God-King of all things in this Universe, destroying anything and anyone that was not entirely under her control or in her possession leaves a mark. She craves power, first step is to regain the powers that she had upon her resurrection on this world, but then after that she has a desire to regain the power that she had millennia ago when the world shuddered at the sound of her name. She was worshipped, and loved, and feared, and she wants nothing more, in varying degrees, to feel those emotions again.
Revenge; It is a satisfactory feeling, whether for a small slight or a great one, and she has a great desire to find revenge upon those that murdered her back in the time of her greatest hour and ascend to her height once again.
Inside; This comes in many forms – being trapped inside her empowered human shell, being trapped inside of a building, being trapped inside one world and inside one time – she is always ‘inside’, and it eats away at her like acid.
Weakness; She despises being weak. She despises seeing weakness, she always has but even more so now when it reflects her own powerlessness in the face of the universe. She hates that she has been condemned to this, that is nothing in comparison to the power that she should posses.
Humans; They are weak. They are fragile and petty and jealous creatures. They are miniscule. And she is trapped inside the shell of one of them and is surrounded by them and though she should be ruling them, she is trapped amongst them.
Grief; Wes’s. Gunn’s. Angel’s. Her own. It tastes bitter and sour and acrid in her mouth and in her throat and tightens and tangles in the pit of her stomach like a many headed worm that she cannot rid herself of, or even begin to understand the seeds of.
Regain power; Illyria has not given up on finding a way to regain her power, be it in stages, or in one big bang, as long as she can find a way to either strengthen her shell or create / possess a more powerful one that is capable of containing her power so she does not have to go through the process of being stripped of it once again. Truth be told, she would prefer to find a way to strengthen the one that she currently possesses, out of some odd sense of connection that she feels to it and the people that are bound to it, but that is not something that she would confess. She has continued to look for resources, and allies, perhaps a way to delve into the Deep Well again to siphon off power, or a way to awaken a servant to aide her.
Revenge; While betrayal was, in and of itself, not something that was unexpected in the day of the Primordium, it is something that she has become increasingly bothered about as she is trapped in this particular shell and on this particular world. She wishes to find the sarcophagi of any that remain that were responsible for her assassination and destroy them to keep there from being any possibility at all that they might come to power over her.
SO, WHAT ARE YOU LIKE? :
Overview; There is much about Illyria that is impassive, withdrawn, arrogant – there is much about her that is the same as she once was. She is imperious, she looks at the world as if she should own it, and treats pretty much everyone that she meets as if they owe her something – because in her opinion, that is how it is. While she does suffer from moments of weakness, and at times feels her lack of power and position very painfully and poignantly, the underlying personality that she possesses is that of a ruler. Of one who has seen untold horrors and beauties, who has traveled through all of time and all dimensions as she wished, because it is, who she is and what she was. She does not wish to separate herself from these emotions or this desire because without it she is absolutely lost. While she reluctantly craves some form of attachment, some pursuit of the emotions that taint her now, in the end she is at a loss of what to do with them. She does not understand them, and that angers her more than she would care to admit.
Impartial; In many ways, she is separated from this world and the occupants in it. She has the ability to look at almost anything in an entirely impartial and emotionless matter (in her opinion, at least) – most of the matters of this world do not directly influence her in the scheme of things as she sees herself above the petty mortal matters. This allows her to offer, at times, a base assessment of a situation or to see threats where they might not otherwise be seen, but it often presents what to others seems a callous disregard for human life or for anything in terms of consequences – and while this is also true within some extent, it is not out of malice. Merely… a matter of perspective.
Arrogant; Something that she feels that she is entitled to, being as she was once ruler of all this world and others, she looks at all of those around her most times as if she is still the god-king and they were ants before her.
Pensive; There is much that she has lost, and almost all of this world does nothing but remind her of what she was before, of what she possessed, of the rank and title and powers. Her world, and her army, all of her followers and worshippers and servants, and though she may not admit it, she misses them, and grieves for them and for herself, and there are times when this shows through far more than she would wish.
Volatile; She has a temper, not so well hidden underneath the icy exterior that she likes to present to the world. She revels in chaos and violence, and lived in an era where nightmares tortured and vampires were darker, fiercer creatures, and where many species intermingled and fought underneath her power, and the spark of God-wrath and righteous indignation still show themselves freely.
maybe without me YOU’LL RETURN ALL THE BEAUTY I ONCE KNEW
ANY FAMILY? : None. WHAT'S HAPPENED TO YOU SO FAR?:
Illyria, in the Primordium Age, rose to power over the earth and several dimensions.
An Old One, it was a god-King of the world, capable of traveling through time and space at a whim.
One of the most powerful, most feared and loved of all of its kind, to the point that millions of years later she would still have acolytes and followers.
Betrayed, her essence was confined to a sarcophagus and her power placed in jewels on her coffins.
She was placed in the Deeper Well with the other Old Ones.
Surviving Old Ones were cast out as humans and other demons rose to power, leaving only those in the Deeper Well behind.
In the 21st century, millennium after she was placed in the Deeper Well, her coffin disappeared from the Well.
A month later, the sarcophagi arrived at Wolf, Ram & Hart in Los Angeles.
Winifred Burkley was possessed by the dust and essence of the sarcophagus.
Within a day, her soul was consumed as the essence of Illyria burned her out, leaving only a hardened shell.
Illyria awoke, resurrected in the shell of Winifred Burkle.
Confrontations with the Angel Investigations team ensue, and she finds her priest, Knox, who had been working in the lab with Fred and was one of the agents of her resurrection.
Knock unlocks the binding that Wolfram & Hart had put on the dimension that Illyria’s kingdom and army were kept within.
Pursuing Illyria, Angel professes himself to be the protector of the humans, even Knox, though Wesley kills Knox.
Wesley managed to follow Illyria through the portal to the kingdom, where she sees that her statue has decayed and that her army and kingdom are long since dead.
Having difficulty knowing what her place is now, Illyria returns to Wesley.
They strike a bargain – he will teach her of this world if she agrees not to kill.
Within weeks of her resurrection, her shell begins to degrade and she loses the ability to control her place in the temporal stream.
Seeing what she perceives as Angel and the others causing her death, she strikes first.
In a temporal backlash and paradox, Angel perceives this and is able to prevent the deaths.
Wesley explains that the weapon is not meant to kill, but to drain away the excess power to keep her from exploding and taking out half the United States.
Despite Illyria’s declaring she would rather die, her power is drained, leaving her weakened by far even in comparison to her initial strength at resurrection.
Weakened, and in despair, she struggles to find her place.
The arrival of Fred’s parents spur her to take Fred’s form, allowing her to fully experience the emotions and memories for herself in entirety, leaving her even more at a loss.
Despite the fact that her disguising herself as Fred has caused a widening of the schism between herself and Wesley she agrees to help the team in their attempts to avert the apocalypse and take out the members of the black thorn.
After completing her assignment she went to find Wesley, only to find that he is dying.
As he died, she ‘lied’ to him, taking on the form of Fred again and telling him that she loved him, and that now they would be together.
After his death, she killed the demon that killed him, and then waged full war with the demons that Wolfram and Hart sent to take down Los Angeles and Angel’s team.
After the Revelation, and when Angel and the others, including Wesley’s ghostly form, moved to New York to deal with the trouble there, she felt compelled to travel with them.
but if i stay i know WE WILL BOTH BE DROWNED BY YOU HOLDING ONTO ME
THE IMPACT :
These people… these humans, they would speak to me of the great revelation as if they have even the smallest idea of what it was. As if they could even begin to wrap their very small and very human minds around the bloodshed and violence that consumed the city they call Los Angeles. It should have been the end of all things, for this small world, for this puny civilization. They thought it was. They also thought they knew what was coming. I wonder, if they had, if they would still have so willingly sacrificed their lives for it. Hell on earth. It is a phrase that is overused in my opinion. In this singular instance, it was an accurate description. It was good. It allowed me to sate my desire for more violence for a while. A very little while. I did not like to feel these irrelevant emotions. I am not meant to feel loss. Anger – anger I am accustomed to. And anger, and righteous wrath, the demons felt in full. No. Not in full. In as much as I was capable of, being trapped in this shell, that reeks of mortality, and humanity. I waged war nonetheless. I took their spines, their skulls, their horns, their tails, their spikes, and any other protruding things that I could find on their bodies and I killed, until there was nothing left to kill. The others that came, they took kills that should have been ours, but Angel said we should not kill them for it. That they were allies.
They had saved Gunn. I had not expected to see him again, not living. Vampires, they called themselves, but not like the ones that I had known in my brief time in this world. They were not filled with the darkness of those like Angelus, or Spike was once. They were filled with the darkness of a human soul, only with immortality to sharpen their desires. Immortality. Another word they use without understanding. They are not immortal. Their bodies die with little more effort than a human. And they still think that they can rule the world. That they can pull the strings of fate to suit their whims. It amuses me when it suits me to be amused. I do not find I am given to much amusement, of late. There is, still, something stirring. There is always something stirring, though, is there not? Something that looms over these ants, and their anthills? Shadows creep and angels weep, and darkness never sleeps.
Something calls to the darkness. I can feel it, an ache in my ancient bones. This war, it is not over. I wonder if it has truly begun. The others feel it too, though I do not know if they know it yet. They are so easily distracted by this woman child that they call Buffy. Their slayer. They would end the world for her, I think. Perhaps they shall. They say it is for the world that they moved. One city to another, they are all the same to me. Anthills. Waiting to be stepped on. This one they call New York. I wonder, where is the one that was Old York. In the ashes beneath this one perhaps? It is much the same here, as it was before the screaming and the dying in the city of angels. They call this city, too, the city of dreams. I do not dream here. It is … interesting to me, that they do not call it the city of good dreams. Angel dreams, but I do not think they are of good things. Spike, my pet, I do not think he dreams at all, unless it is of blood. He enjoyed the war. It pleases me that he survived. My Wesley… he did not, and yet he is here, in this city of dreams. Bound to the Wolf, Ram and Hart. It still does not please him, what I am, and who I am not. I believe I have said much. I will say no more, this no longer entertains me.
