F.A.Q
(Frequently Asked Questions)

If you've read all the material in the As It Was Written (rules, plot, etc) section and still need a bit of assistance, this is for you! This is good to read if you're just starting out.

Joining
anything related to diving into NI
To Join, first read all required information and register with the first and last name (in proper capitalization) of your desired character

Q. To join, what info do I ABSOLUTELY need to know/ required to read?
A. As long as you've read the RULES, the PLOT, your fandom's CANON LIST (if applicable), and the wiki page for any non-human species you're applying for (see the original or canon character applications for details). Then, you're good to go.

Q. I'm a big fan of (Insert Show here) but I don't know anything about any of the other ones. Is that cool?
A. That's MORE than cool! In fact, it'll probably be more exciting for you as an RPer because both you and your character will be discovering this crazy mixed up world together. Your character isn't supposed to know anything else but what's in his/her world from the show they came from, so its perfectly fine to be a fan of one show and not the rest. Everyone is in the same boat.

Q. With so many fandoms connected to each other, I'm a bit confused and overwhelmed. Help! How do I dive in?
A. Keep in mind that there is no need to keep track of everything going on in this site. As long as you grasp the main plot and your fandom's plot, you'll be fine. Just jump in!

In addition, you can direct any questions to the staff and they can clear things up. The Wiki is helpful too.

Character Creation
anything related to making your character
To create a character, fill out an application located here and wait for a staff member to approve it

Q. Are there any bans?
A. No. But we do have a limit on how many characters of certain species and groups we'll allow - mostly because these groups are very 'elite' or rare in canon. You can find those numbers in the LIMITS & STATS page.

Q. I want to introduce a species that is not acknowledged on this site. How can I do that?
A. Please PM an admin BEFORE you make an application - we'll decide if the species is acceptable. There are tons of species possible that are not mentioned so don't be afraid to ask, we'll most likely say yes.

Q. I want to introduce a canon character that is not acknowledged on this site. How can I do that?
A. If the character is alive, as long as you explain (through history or the RP sample prompt) how the character fits in the plot, you can play them.

If the canon is dead, know that we rarely accept dead canons (so that things don't get too chaotic in the world), and it will be on a case by case basis. Please PM an admin about how you think the character will fit in the plot and how/why the character is brought back to life.

Q. Does (X Canon Character) have to stay the way the canon list/plot outlined?
A. No. The Canon List and plot places characters on the board like chess pieces. It is ONLY a starting point and everything can be changed through plotting.

Maybe, for instance, you want to play Spike but like him better without a soul - you can plot out a way to remove his soul. Maybe Conner doesn't want to be allied with Angel - play this out and make it happen. Add your change to the story of Natural Instincts!

Be creative. If you want Harmony to have a TV show (like in the comics) go for it. Want Eric Northman to own a bar in NYC too? Go for it! Want Sam Winchester with or without a soul? Go for it! Want Nina to lose the baby in Being Human - go for it!

For things you feel you need a more pointed change and/or it can't be addressed through RPing, talk to a staff member.

Q.I need character ideas!
A. Visit our WISHLIST section for characters that people really want to see on the site and contribute to their individual plots. Also the CHARACTER IDEAS thread tells you major plot characters that we'd love to see as well as general tips for creating characters.

The Site
anything about the site itself
Take a good look around and don't hesitate to ask questions in the cbox (to your right) or PM a staff member

Q. What's the deal with the Wiki? How can I make a page?
A. The wiki is there so you can easily search and look up terms that people might bring up from other fandoms you haven't seen. Plus, everything on the Wiki is catered to the NI plot (meaning, it might not align completely with the original content).

Also, the wiki is there to help you dive deeper into the world of NI if you wish to do so. You can also add more to the wiki by first reading the WIKI INFO & SIGN-UPS thread (you must have a registered account to view).

Q. What is an NPC?
A. A NPC is a "non-player character," as no single player typically plays them or 'owns' them. Usually these characters are better known as "extras" or "guest stars" If you need a minor 'big bad' or your run-of-the-mill vamp to kill, or some small role - NPCs are great for that. Also, if you just need something to do and you're caught up with threads, playing NPCs can be a fun option.

On NI, we have a community NPC account that anyone can use. Some canons can be NPCed as well. Find out how to use it in the NPC Center (you must have a registered account).

Q. How do seasons and the moon phases work on this site?
A. Seasons last 3 months. Any thread that starts within those three months are in that season. The current season is always located in the welcome table on the main page. Full moons happen during the last week of each month and there will be a countdown to it in that table too. Any night thread that a were, who is bound to shift during the full moon (there are some who aren't), participates in must include a shift during that time. Ashe weres (from True Blood) in particular do not have to do this but there is a strong urge to shift during this time.

This does not mean that the whole thread needs to revolve around the shift or that the shift needs to be depicted completely. For instance, the thread can start right after the shift has occurred or right before it. As long as an immediate shift is somehow incorporated in the thread, then you're fine.

This way, characters will be able to anticipate a full moon and take whatever actions needed before people start threads involving shifters/weres. In addition, wiccans and magic spells sometimes rely on the full moon. Shifter/were transformations might be happening at the same time as other full moon related things.

Q. How do we use the Open Threads section?
A. When ever you make an open thread, go to the Open Threads section and post a small advertisement for it, telling people what the thread is about and providing a link to the thread. The post can say something like, "(X character) is looking for her dog in the park. Come help her find her pet!" If the thread becomes inactive or closed, make sure to put that in the title.

Its a good way for players to find open threads easily.

Q. Where can I get a signature and avatar? or Where can I set up a graphics shop?
A. People can make graphics shops by posting a thread for themselves at the GRAPHIC SHOPS. Please read the rules if you're making a shop. Members can request graphics from people's shops.

Q. Can I make a character from another canon not on this site (Twilight, Moonlight, Anne Rice, Van Helsing, Underworld, Dark Shadows, Blade, Forever Knight, Blood Ties, Sanctuary, Vampire High)?
A. If you ask us this, we will most likely say no. Its not that we don't value these shows/movies, but firstly 1) this site only focuses on TV shows. 2) The way the plot is set up, everything is very tightly woven, so it's hard to just add canons to the site on a whim.

Q. Why not the American version of Being Human?
A. We figured we'd only have room for one version of Being Human, considering their very similar plot points. Therefore, we decided to go with the original. We might consider adding the American version at a later date.

Q. Why'd you guys come up with this nutty idea for a site?
A. There are many similar themes between these shows and they all are great in their own right. So even if you never seen an episode of some of the shows, as you RP here, hopefully you'll get to learn a little bit about them and see those common themes yourself.

Role-Playing
anything concerning RPing, specific fandoms, etc

Q. I have a True Blood vampire character and he/she broke the law. If there is no sheriff/magister taken, how do we plot out punishments?
A. You can use the NPC account to play out a tribunal. Make a 'generic' sheriff, king, queen, or magister - which ever is needed - to administer punishment. The NPC cannot be used for a bigger plot, however. It can only be used to preform a duty. For more on NPC rules and how to make one, visit theNPC CREATION thread. NOTE: vampires outside of True Blood could get in trouble with the sheriff as well if they disobey the authority.

Q. I need plotting/RPing ideas!
A. If you've joined and have no idea where to start with your character, a good start is first making a RP REQUEST page for yourself. Simply make a thread outlining important notes about your character that people might want to know and ask if anyone is up for RPing. Browse other people's request pages as well and reply to them!

You can check out the OPEN THREADS section.

And check out the MAJOR PLANNING section for the PLOT GRAB BAG. There you can find plotting ideas that people would love to see on the site but cannot implement themselves. Members and staff constantly add to it.

Q. How can we use the First Evil and the Powers That Be in our plots?
A. These two characters are incorporeal but are very important to the main plot. Have no idea who these guys are? Read about THE FIRST EVIL HERE and THE POWERS THAT BE HERE.

For the First, any one is allowed to play him. It has its own NPC account and you can read the rules and guidelines for controlling/requesting him in the NPC Center HERE. We do it this way because the First is omnipresent, can take on many forms, and would be fun to play for anyone who feels like it/has extra time.

The Powers are the "forces of good" and can be referenced as "God" (if that's the belief). The Powers can be spoken to through a medium if you know how to do so and can grant gifts/miracles. Directions on how to request the Powers is also located HERE.
