The Valentines Hate Crimes are a series of crimes, including murder, assault, and vandalism, occurring in Albany, New York. They are so called because the first incident was reported on Valentine’s Day, 2016. The crimes are still ongoing.
Victims
There is no apparent correlation between the victims of these crimes aside from their sexuality, or perceived sexuality.[1] They span a variety of ages, ethnicities, and social backgrounds.[2] As well as the four deaths, at least ten people have been hospitalised for their injuries,[3] including two in ICU,[4] and several thousand dollars worth of damage to property has been caused.[5] Sources say that none of the attacks were provoked.[6][7]
Deaths
The first two deaths were those of Hunter Gideon and Jackson Greenaway, two sixteen year olds who were beaten to death by their peers at school for liking one another.[8] They were killed on Valentine’s Day. The other two deaths are those of Rani Chandra, 34,[9] and Eli Bloomberg, 61.[10] The cause of death for these has not been released.
Investigation
The investigation is said to be “ongoing” and the Albany Police Department is “hopeful” that they can stop the crimes.[11] A tip hotline has been set up.[12] So far, minor arrests have been made for vandalism and verbal abuse. Only two arrests have been made for the violent attacks.[13]
