Weight: 142lbs
Build: Athletic
Eyes: Blue
Hair color & style: Dark brown in color and he wears it a bit long
In depth:Hal's not really been a 'snappy' dresser. Is it warm? Functional? Yeah, he'll wear it. His usual attire is just a pair of jeans and a shirt with an over shirt and coat over it. His skin is quite fair and he's pretty certain he'd be a burner if he lived in the South. A messy mop of brown hair sits on his head and he usually has it grown out a little bit. Often he'll miss a day or two when it comes to shaving. As a cop, he tried to keep as clean shaven as possible. These days, though, he's not as worried about it. His favorite piece of clothing is his heavy leather jacket. He's had the thing since he was about twenty and it's pretty clear that he's had it that long.
He's got some scars on his hands from working with them all the time. Nothing truly of much note. There's a tattoo on his upper right shoulder, his friends often joking it's instructions on how to pop it back into place. Really, though, it's nothing too big, just a small Celtic symbol. Other than that, Hal doesn't have any other distinguishing marks.
What is notable about Hal's appearance is the way he carries himself. Being the oldest brother and a cop, Hal's always walked with a great amount of pride that's stuck with him. He walks with his back straight and head up. There's usually some type of grin on his face. Whether it's a full on toothy smile or a simple wry grin like he's laughing at a private joke, well that depends on his mood, or how many drinks he might have had at the pub. He has an easy laugh that's he just put back into regular use. He can laugh at the silliest things just because it feels good to laugh again. He's been through mental hell and back. If there's a chance to laugh at life, Hal's going to take it.

In depth:If anything, Hal is a honest guy. Sometimes a little too blunt with his statements, but he's gotten into the habit of not caring if what he says causes bad blood. And usually, his comments are so barbed that a drink down at the pub won't smooth over. His sense of humor is rather dry and people that know him are aware of his sarcastic nature. He likes to crack jokes on his friends and is pretty capable of taking a joke as well. Being a big brother, Hal has a tendency to look out for people younger than himself. Young children hit that chord in him as well.
He's quite confident in his abilities. Hal doesn't lord his skills over other people, but he doesn't underplay them either. He likes to brag sometimes just like anyone else. Get a few drinks in him, though and he'll boast of his greatness to the hills. Normally though, his quiet confidence is something that people seem to feed off of. He's got this air around him that lets some people feel calmer and more at their ease. It used to be stronger before Mary passed on, but his old self is steadily returning.
His temper is almost never violent. He's a slow burn, used to putting up with abuse for a long time. But Hal has his limits and once they're reached, he cuts the offenders out of his life. Perhaps once, a person has won their way back into Hal's good graces, but it's very rare. He is quick to trust those he counts as his friends, but once he's finally burned, things are never the same again. Liars and cheats put him off the most. Along with people that refuse to educate themselves. And that doesn't mean he's expecting everyone to attend university, he's knows lots of people that haven't, his father for example. But they weren't ignorant. That's what irritates the hell out of him. To him, that's the worst thing a person can be.
He's not a rich man, but he'll help out a friend when he can. Whether it's helping fix a car or repairing a roof, Hal's usually one of the first people to volunteer. He likes the small town he lives in, even with the disturbances and he's a little annoyed with all the attention it's been getting from outsiders. Like they need help from outsiders. Hal might always be the first to help others out, but he doesn't like getting it. Incredibly stubborn and on that point especially, that is probably what alienates other people the most about him.

Happiest Memory: Asking Mary to marry him
Worst Memory: The day after Mary's passing
History:Hal was the first born in a small family. His brothers followed not too long after him and Hal stepped into the role of the big brother easily. He wasn't the biggest of his brothers, but he could fight for them as fiercely as the rest. They tended to take care of each other as their parents spent a great deal of time at their jobs. Their father was a fisher and their mom worked in one of the resorts not far from their small town. Hal was always the one to make sure they all got to school and had lunches before heading out the door. And Hal didn't mind it. It just seemed to come naturally to him.
As he got older though, around sixteen, he started not wanting to play the parent. Tired of always have to be responsible for his brothers, Hal thought about just taking off. It was Mary that convinced him that the idea was tremendously stupid. He was griping about slapping a few sandwiches together? They had been friends since before Hal could remember and if there was one person that could beat some sense into his stubborn head, it was Mary.
So Hal stayed on, and to his delight, his brothers seemed to do a lot of growing up in the next few years. Hal finished school with high marks and went into the police force. It was something that had always attracted him as a boy and he didn't have any desire to follow in his father's profession. The day he graduated from his training, Hal popped the question to Mary and they were married in the following year. By the time Hal was twenty-three, most people could look at him and Mary and see they were on the way to a happy life. Hal was a great officer. He took his job quite seriously but tried not to let it leak over into his home life. Things rarely stay that way though.
Hal was about 27 when it happened. He and his partner were in the process of stopping a bank robbery in progress. The scene was insane, nothing like it really ever happened in Leyndarmal. This kind of stuff only happened in the bigger cities. So of course all the local news reporters were there not making things any easier. Before he and the rest of the cops could secure the scene, shots were fired in the bank. They stormed in and found that three people had been shot, two civilians and one of the robbers. One of the civilians had been a bank teller and the other had been Hal's wife. Hal had never been one to break down, but he did there. He remembered hitting one of the other robbers with the butt of his gun, but everything else became a blur.
A week later, Hal left the force. Anyone could see he was a total wreck and he stayed away from town for a long time. Sure, he came to get food and the like, but he didn't go to the pub or stay any longer than he had to. His brother, Erik, took care of him during that time. Partially keeping an eye on him, Erik had never seen his brother in such a dark state. When he was 30, Hal started to liven up a little more. He was still just a shade of his former self, but he seemed to be trying to pick himself back up. Hal opened his bookshop when he was 35, his personality returning more fully within those years. The shop had been something that Mary had hoped to have one day. Hal reasoned it would be a way to keep her memory around without dwelling on it.
Since then, while Hal hasn't forgotten her, Hal has moved on with his life. He still likes his privacy on his past, but he frequents the town more. People know his loss was bad and they're just glad to see him start to return more and more to his normal self. His laughs and smiles aren't the half hearted mask they once were. They're finally genuine again.
INDEPTH ROLEPLAYPlot ideas:Would like to see more development in his seeing the shadow people, become sort of a local investigator to keep those silly tourist investigators in line...
Besides that, I'm pretty open as to what direction the board takes Hal in.
