Asren’s great grandfather, an archer of the Gray, tribes brought the people of Emmersend beneath a common banner. The people were hunted by a sandworm that had been speared and driven into blood lust.Together the tribes of Emmersend hunted the beast for ten years that turned the desert into a kingdom and made the Gray Archer king. He ruled until he died on the throne. His son, struggled to keep the crown as long as he could but died in the Desolace. His wife passed the crown to their son, Coll Archer, Asren’s father and Emmersend’s protector of democracy.
Asren learned quickly in his father’s years of rule. His father showed him the Desolace, showing him to survive on the land’s harsh hospitality. His father taught him how to lead, that ruling was more of listening than of speaking. Asren’s father willingly gave him the crown when he was twenty one. Asren and his betrothed wife, Vivianne ruled the land the way his father had; with the people and not against them.
Emmersend prospered as did their family. He found himself fiercely in love with his children, his queen only growing more beautiful to him with each sunrise and sunset. And then one morning he awoke in the woods of Duskwither with new memories of a modest life. A garrison took him in as a footsoldier and he witnessed strange horrors in this new land. Panicked and out of sorts the lost king fought recklessly. Then an Old soldier taught him to be calm and to fight as a holy warrior - a paladin. He said, ‘fighting is more of listening than of speaking...’
