Fan Fiction Points

Challenges: 5 - 10 points

Points are given for the originality of the Challenge.

A challenge (for those that don’t know) is a little idea to help inspire people to write Fan Fiction. For example: What was Dumbledore's (or whomever’s) favorite childhood toy? What was it? Does he/she still have it hidden away in a cupboard somewhere? Was it destroyed or given away years ago? You tell me. As per usual, this challenge is open to any or no ship, it must be rated PG13 to be posted here, any point in the timeline, any crossover, any AU. Just tell me what he/she liked to play with when he/she was a little boy/girl.



Essays: 10 - 15 points


Essays can be any length, and can cover a multitude of topics from the world of Harry Potter, such as: Relationships, the elusive Horcruxes, The tyranny of Voldemort during the Marauder era, what would have happened had Malfoy killed Dumbledore etc.

Essays that spark general and friendly debate and really get us all thinking, of course will receive a higher grade.



Poem: 15 - 35 points


Poems can be any length and cover a multitude of topics from the world of Harry Potter.

'Epic' Poems will be awarded full points with the possibility of earning points somewhere from the Short Fan Fiction category.


Short Fan Fiction (Unbeta’ed): 35 - 100 points

Short Fan Fiction (Beta’ed): 100 - 150 points


Short Fan Fiction can be anywhere between 100 word Drabble and 650 word ‘Short Story’.

They will be graded for both quantity and quality. Please see the table for further information.



Long Fan Fiction (Unbeta’ed): 150 - 200 points

Long Fan Fiction (Beta’ed): 200 - 245 points


Long Fan Fiction is any Fic that is between 650 and 2,000 words.

They will be graded for quantity and quality. Please see the table for further information



Really Long Fan Fiction (Unbeta’ed): 245 – 290 points

Really Long Fan Fiction (Beta’ed): 290 – 350 points


Really Long Fan Fiction is any Fic that exceeds 2,500 words.

This can be considered ‘Series’ Fic, where each chapter exceeds 2,500+ words.

They will be graded for quantity and quality. Please see the table for information.



The Long and Short of it All -


Series Fic (Where the piece has more then two chapters) will be considered under the Long Fan Fiction Grading Scale, unless each chapter exceeds the Really Long Fan Fiction requirements. Pieces that are one to two chapters long – where the word limit has not exceeded 650 words, will be considered under the Short Fan Fiction Grading Scale.

The above mentioned sections are mere guidelines for your Fan Fiction. They are what we - The Graders - use to go by when grading your piece.

The new Points System is also another guideline. They are the base amount of points you can recieve for a piece, according to word count.

If your piece falls above one number, but below another, you will be given a base grade of the lower number. From there, points will be decreased due to any errors that may include - but are not exclusive to - grammar, spelling, flow, functionality and overall plot.

Once all errors have been taken into account, points will be tallied and given.

All kinds of Fic is allowed – M/M F/F M/F.

Works that are above a FRC Rating are allowed, however, please place a warning in the along with the title/disclaimer/chapter/author information so people can avoid it if they wish.

Please, also include a standard disclaimer with ALL Fan Fiction work – a lot of sites have gotten into a great deal of trouble over the lack of disclaimers and have been threatened with law suits. Your standard disclaimer would look like this: “I do not claim to own (insert character/s name/s here), they are the sole work and property of J.K Rowling, Warner Bros. Bloomsbury Books and Scholastic Books. This is purely a non-profit piece of Fiction.” Failure to do so continually will result in loss of points.

Five points will be deducted for failing to include your name and house either at the end of the story or in the story notes. (We’d like to know who you are).

Unbeta’ed Fic simply means a Fic that hasn’t been run through the spell check on your word processor (Microsoft Word etc.) Sloppy Fic can sometimes turn readers away, no matter how brilliant a plot line you’ve got.

Character Bashing is also a no-no. We are a diverse group, so please, bear in mind that while you might not like one character, someone else may. So, for example no “Hermione is a bushy haired, buck toothed badger with a pole up her ass,” or things like that. Be nice and considerate and above all else, explore the endless possibilities that a place like Hogwarts and Wizarding and Muggle England brings.

Please be sure to include warnings in your story information as well (things like Character death etc).
