TITLE: The Devil and Ms.McCall

They were at it again, so I preoccupied myself across the hall with work to the loud tune of Rachmaninoff's Symphony #3 on my ipod stereo. For the third consecutive day, Lucky tracked my every shipment on Spoon Island causing a lag in processing. The task became tedious and my patience wore thin; Business as usual except for the investigation over Nikolas' death.
"This business isn't legit and I doubt once the hospital gets word on his 'procedures' he won't be practicing medicine anywhere soon."
"How dare you!" Her voice could bellow with such heat that it made me smile. Sam's passion and anger were what attracted me to her. Sure, I've had my list of ladies from the past but Sam had her own little dark secrets too, it's the thing which binds us.
"Is that good, Sam? C'mon you're smarter than this or are you that desperate?" His voice softened as Sam responded with a hard slap.
"You have the nerve to judge me? After the lengths you went to protect your precious Elizabeth? You say Ian is bad news yet you allow Jason Morgan, a hitman for Sonny, raise your son! Before you start judging people, you should stop and recognize the hypocrisy of your own life."
"Nikolas was my brother, Sam!” Lucky responded, diverting from her comment.
"And someone has to pay, right? Ian was a part of this, I get that point. But you can't lay all the blame on him! Lucky, Nikolas chose those treatments!"
"Who are you? How could you condone his actions? Ian manipulated him to do it! He didn't have a choice--"
"That's where you're wrong! Nikolas was desperate to keep Emily in his life! At any cost and he paid the price for it! He didn't care about anyone else!" Her voice faltered a little and my gaze shot upwards. I could spy with enough convenience through the crack in my office door, away from their line vision in the hallway.
"So you're saying he asked for it? That he deserved to die?"
The tension hit its apex and anything was possible. Lucky neared her and I almost rose from my seat until I noticed she never budged an inch. I placed my paperwork down to fully watch in silence.
"In a way? Yes." The deadpan look on her face made Lucky retract a bit and he turned from her and began walking out the door. "Lucky, no one could talk sense to him. What Ian did was buy us more time with Nikolas. Ironically, the procedure slowed the growth of the tumor. Whether you like it or not, Nikolas chose to die and leave Spencer behind. He was that selfish."
"Because of our history, I didn't come after him right now, Sam. Next time I won't be so considerate." Lucky's attempt at a threat almost seemed funny if he didn't look so pathetic. He slammed the front door, its sound reverberating throughout the house.
"Hey," Sam peeked from behind my door and let out a sigh before walking in casually with a drink in her hand. She wore a short burgundy wrapdress that hugged every curve, and strappy black heels. Today she chose to pull back her dark hair in a clip. She looked elegant as usual except for the defeated look upon her face.
"Are you going to pretend you didn't hear us?" she asked, stirring her drink and watching the ice cubes clink against the glass.
"I wasn't planning on it," I got up from my seat as she came to my side, placed her drink on the corner of my desk and leaned towards me. "You should have let him through, you know." I reached for her hands that were soft to the touch and felt the engagement ring around her finger beneath my grasp.
"Yeah but c'mon Ian, you know me, he's been finding any excuse lock you up." She wrapped her arms around me and I kissed the nap of her neck softly. "Plus, I'm in no mood to see you both fight."
"You okay, though? He came at you pretty hard..." my voice drifted off and I did feel a sense of guilt about Nikolas, after all I know what is to be unable to let go of someone. All I could do was try to help even if my methods are unconventional.
"I can handle it." she laughed lightly and began to run her fingers through my hair, "Hmm...we should go and meet up with Alexis. It's Kristina's birthday."
"I know." Despite the work I had to finish, I always made an effort to indulge in the little things. Kristina's birthday was just the occasion for us to leave the island. "I got a surprise--"
"What?" She pulled back from my embrace and looked at me with curiosity, "I shouldn't be surprised but..." she scrunched her eyebrows and playfully slapped my shoulder, "What is it?"
"No. You'll have to wait and see." I laughed as she kept her look of astonishment. "Okay, one hint. It's at the park."
"How much time do we have?" she demanded, grabbing me by my waist, tempting me to spill more details. I look down at her as she teases me.
