Call of Duty. It shook the world more than my cell phone on vibrate.

As far as "ground-breaking" goes, it all goes to Goldeneye being the first console-based multi-player shooter.

As far as COD goes, I probably shouldn't say much, cuz I've never played a COD game - simple fact of the matter is, war games of that specific caliber just don't appeal to me - my point of view is that, you play medal of honor, you play them all. But like I said before - that's just my opinion, and I'm biased toward more modern/futuristic types of weaponry/environments.

...no, don't worry, I don't like Halo 2 biggrin.gif

Gotta go with PD/GE on this.

The COD series is great...but what sets it apart is the ambiance. The gameplay itself is still straight-up FPS.

The GE/PD series...especially the original PD....had so many innovative elements that they revived and defined the console FPS genre... cool.gif

Aw that's no good man, you gotta start with the ORIGINAL. Gotta get TS1, and gotta get TS2. They are experiences that nobody should miss - especially TS2! That game was like, the ultimate 'hangin out and doin nothin' game. My 3 buddies would come over, and we'd just play crazy shit like Elimination with bots on the Ice Station - man, I loved that game so much, I'm considering re-buying it on XBox.

OK, I guess since I'm an old fart I gotta call it this way:

You cannot have this debate without mentioning Wolfenstein/Doom. Since they are more or les one of the same I won't go with a chicken or the egg argument here and instead say that both of the games were THE key to FPS games.

They put the genre on the map, like Resident Evil did Survival Horror, and a ton a mediocre games followed like every other Strret Fighter II clone.

Now, skip ahead 15 or so years and you have to mention... get ready for it, Halo.

Love it or hate the this game did re-define and raised the bar on the FPS world at the same time.

For it's time there was not a better implementation of AI enemies in a game (Counter-strike's enemies on the Xbox really did impress me alot but Halo preceeded that on the Box).

Additionally Halo took everything great about the FPS games and perfected it, like Italians did pasta.

Halo didn't really have amazing AI, they just moved around and shot at you....any bots can do that (plus, there were no multi-player bots, so you couldn't test them where it counts)....you want to talk AI, you have to look at TFC (team fortress classic) on the computer, with the custom LAN bots. Those were amazing, and blow everything else out of the water, to this day.

The bots from TFC make the bots from the original perfect dark look like they were designed by autistic monkeys. They were nothing short of amazing. They moved fast, they moved constantly, they shot perfectly, AND they talked trash. They knew how to utilize everything at their disposal - the bots that were assigned medics could imitate the best concussion-grenade jumpers - and in fact, outdo them - the soldier-bots could rocket-jump across entire levels; they raped everything in their path.

If you weren't even remotely up to that level of skill, and you just started playing bots, all you'd see is a flurry of bots hopping/flying and spinning around the screen, dropping grenades in your face and putting shotgun bullets into your back at the same time.

If you practiced with these bots long enough, you were better online against humans.

Doom/W3D made the FPS genre start...on PC.

By the time they reached consoles, "dated" would be a huge understatement.

For consoles, it has to be PD/GE....Halo is a smooth engine, but a very bland game after a while.

As I've said before...its good vanilla....like Breyers or something....but it is still vanilla... wink.gif
