General InformationName: Marina Del Rey
Title: Former governess, former attaché; neither of the two positions or titles apply now
Gender: Female
Species: Merfolk, specifically mermaid, with some cecaelia (octopian) lineage through her late mother's ancestral bloodlines
Homeworld: Atlantica
Film: The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning Physical CharacteristicsHeight: Directly between 5'7" and 5'8"
Eyes: Green
Hair/Fur: Born with blonde hair that turned to a muddy brown before falling off prematurely (which was an event due, for the most part, to stress and high blood pressure), Marina has an assortment of wigs and headpieces. She is most commonly seen in a dark purple wig.
Age: 43
Build: Postpartum; not large in the least, but not particularly slender. She has something of a small pudge to her whilst remaining a very limber being. One could say that she has a typical body for a woman of her years.
Unique Physical Traits: As aforementioned, Marina is bald. To compensate, she wears many different wigs. Most of her wigs correlate with at least one outfit, as well as correlating with plenty of accesories. Though there are, as just mentioned, plenty of wigs and headpieces she wears, her favorite is a dark purple wig that goes well with her natural fin. Though her natural fin is purple, her many costumes include costume tails, and thus she is known for her ever-changing appearance.
Other: Marina is a Bob Mackie woman, in terms of style. She is a mermaid diva, and her dramatic personality is something she purposely enhances through her variety of clothing ensembles. She fancies herself to be a stronger female than she is, and I'd venture to say that she is confident about her sensuality. Fighting CharacteristicsWeapon: N/A, though one could once count her pack of electric eels
Magic: N/A
Other: Marina owned a pack of electric eels, pets that she adored and doted over. She had a fascination with the most vicious sorts of sea creatures since childhood, and never had any problem directing her eels. Because of the nature of her pets, they were required to be locked behind a cage in their owner's quarters. Once they were released, set to kill Sebastian and Princess Ariel, they met their doom. Marina is now devoid of pets and weapons. Personal CharacteristicsLikes: - Power

Family: Wilhelm "Vil" Del Rey (deceased father); Miranda Gorgos (deceased mother); Sabana (younger sister); May (niece); Christina (younger sister); Elizabeth (niece); Benjamin (husband); Benjamin III (son); Steven "Stevie" (son); Ursula (distant cousin); Morgana (distant cousin)
Best Friend(s): Benjamin
Relationship(s): Married to her manicurist and therapist, a green manatee named Benjamin who is her direct opposite in many ways
Future Goals: Reclaim high positions of power and have her revenge on Sebastian for humiliating her
Personality: A very unique and zany woman in numerous respects, Marina Del Rey continues to hold herself in the highest regard despite her internal conflicts. She despately wants to be recognized as capable and talented, and is deeply upset when underestimated. Her anger is directed toward specific people, as she likes to have a name or two with which to lash out at. Marina is able to work hard, though she requires more rest throughout each day than most. She attempts to hide her physical flaws through a dramatic personality and sense of style. This is a lady whose feelings run deep, in ways that she herself knows she cannot control. Marina will be an awkward extrovert until the day she dies, something she is very proud of.
Marina wishes she were an ENTJ, and perhaps she is, thus increasing the war within herself as she has no room for error and yet realizes she has a slew of flaws.
History: Marina, born south of the equator, was the oldest child of Wilhelm "Vil" Del Rey, a merman, and Miranda Gorgos, a mermaid with her share of octopian ancestry. In Marina's earliest years, merfolk of mixed species were still looked down upon in prejudice as being semi-monsters of lesser worth. Her mother certainly did nothing to dispel the stereotype. Miranda Gorgos openly despised her own gender. She had wanted sons, and instead had gotten stuck with three peculiar daughters. Though the oldest sibling is often the most mature, Marina was clearly less mature than her sisters despite an age difference of four years in respect to Sabana and five years in respect to Christina. Sabana and Christina would complain of Marina "stealing" their friends, as she found younger companions less stuffy than her same-age peers. The "stolen" friendships often did not last, as Marina had an irritable nature that drove others way from her.
Marina's lack of maturity and inability to control her emotions angered Miranda to excess, which was partly hypocritical on Miranda's part. Mother and daughter were equals in temper and sadism. However, Miranda had also been born the oldest child, and unlike her daughter, she fit the stereotype and was thus furious with Marina for seeming so utterly irresponsible. She attempted to force Marina into being responsible by giving her the duty of watching her younger sisters, an assignment the young mermaid detested. What she really wanted was to see the world and attend one of those new-fangled career boosting academies, but her mother was convinced that she was neither seasmart (streetsmart) nor booksmart. In many ways, her mother was right, though her methods of driving this point home only made matters worse. Marina was told daily that she would never amount to anything, and the punishments she suffered under her mother would one day make King Triton seem, to her, like one of the most easygoing parents in Atlantica.
It also became apparent that Marina was a feminine mermaid. This was the last straw for Miranda Gorgos, who was attempting to raise strong boys despite the odds. Marina grew up as a slave within her own unstable home, and a slave that was continually spoken of as ugly. This left her with permanent insecurities, which she later covered up by being outspoken and flamboyant as an adult. Vil Del Rey, her father, was often an absent figure in her life. Her parents had married for money, and her father did his best to stay away from the dysfunctional home. As a small child, Marina deeply loved her father and wished that he would whisk her away from the others with him. This was not to be.
Marina took on her first job at the age of thirteen, the job of restaurant hostess, and was fired within a week for poor performance. Since that point, she would continue to search for jobs and continue to be misunderstood in her attempts to climb corporate ladders. By the age of twenty-three, it was apparent that Marina would not be able to afford her own way, though her sisters had already swam the "nest." This pleased Miranda, as Miranda had grown addicted to bullying her firstborn. She would have been quite content to do so for the rest of her life.
Fortunately, three years prior, Marina had met a kind-hearted green manatee while the two of them had been working together at a beauty school. Marina had dropped out of the place, but the two had remained friends. Benjamin made the mermaid feel cared for and comfortable, feelings long denied her. The friendship charmed its way into an odd understated romance. While Miranda was away on a trip for business, herself a successful woman, Marina packed her few belongings and stole away from her old home forever. The purple mermaid and the green manatee were secretly wed, and began a new life of exploration together.
Marina was exceptionally happy in the decade that followed. She lived out her dream of seeing the world, seeing more than most sea folk could ever imagine. Her once repressed but undeniably vivid personality was at last fully able to break free. Thinking it only fair that Benjamin wear the pants in the relationship (for lack of a better phrase), what with all he gave her, she was often content to let her husband be the one being with whom she hadn't a problem taking instruction from. The couple had their own mixed breed children. First came a purple manatee named Benjamin III, for his father and paternal grandfather, and later came a merboy called Steven with some strange features for his species.
Marina was a fairly liberal parent, and well-intentioned. But she was more of a pet owner than a parent at heart, having wanted electric eels for as long as she could remember. This just could not be, not with two little boys and no place to put any savages.
After the death of Queen Athena, King Triton was looking for a female mother figure (and rule enforcer) for his seven small daughters. He happened upon Marina and her family as they were just moving into the central area of Atlantica, and chanced upon seeing Marina at her best. Here was a mother of boys, looking for a job. Surely, she had room in her heart for girls. That she did, at first. She leapt into the job, loving her new life at the palace.
Finally, it looked like she was on to the best life possible... and that was when Sebastian, clearly the king's right-hand crab, stepped in to say that he knew had known Marina from years ago. He told King Triton of how incompetant the woman could be, how she reeked at holding down a job, how she was always letting her emotions get the better of her. If it weren't for Benjamin and Triton coming to an agreement, Marina would have been fired before her first day on the job.
As it was, Marina was allowed the position of governess under a contract with heaps of fine print concerning Benjamin and therapy. She wouldn't have minded most of the situation, at the start, had she not continually butted into Sebastian and had Sebastian not lorded himself over her. The tension between Marina and Sebastian was clear to all.
Working with the girls started out well enough. Marina was nothing like the sweet Queen Athena had been; she was dramatic, cranky and silly, but the little girls needed her. Marina found herself having a certain soft spot for the feminine Princess Alana. The best perk of her newfound position was the money for many new outfits and her beloved pets.
Time marched on. The princesses grew older, turning into fiesty teenagers who gave Marina Del Rey nothing but headaches day in and day out. As a matter of fact, Marina became downright disgusted with how spoiled those girls were. They complained of their life at times, and Ariel was the worst at it. They thought they had problems! They thought they were going through a hard childhood! There was no comparison between their easy world and the home that the Del Rey sisters had suffered through. With each passing year, Marina felt that the sheltered girls were mocking her with their lives more and more. Sebastian, of course, didn't help matters, nor did Marina's failure to rise up the palace's corporate totem pole.
There was a three-year period during her time as governess that Marina was almost always ill from anxiety and stress. Because of this, she balded. This made way for wigs and more excuses for costumes, but Marina never forgave the princesses for "causing" her more physical misfortune.
After Marina's one day of work as the king's attaché, she was imprisoned for attempted murder of Sebastian and Princess Ariel. Her pets had been lost in the attempted murder. Declared insane, Marina was permanently exiled from the palace and its surrounding grounds. She was also forbidden contact from all the palace residents, with the exceptions of her immediate family members. She and the ever-loyal Benjamin now reside on Atlantica's outskirts. Their sons, young adult teenagers, remain in the palace.
Marina has been depressed for the past two years, hating Sebastian more than ever but not daring to do a thing about this problem. She would give anything to regain power, but no sea kingdom will take her seriously again.
(Yes, only adults call Steven by his name. His female peers speak of him as Squid Lips Stevie!) Everything ElseName/Alias: Bernadine is my middle name, but my first name is, coincidentally, also the name of a Disney character that I highly doubt I will be roleplaying. To eliminate confusion, I'm Bernadine to you.
Account Custom Title: Filling, yet {oddly} minty!
Roleplay Experience: Eight years online; over ten years and some change playing Dungeons & Dragons
How Did You Find Us: The Little Ariel Forum
Other Characters: N/A
Other: As Marina flips back and forth between a neutral character and a villain, and in fact isn't so sure where she stands herself, I certainly may switch the alignment of this account when situations arise.
Example Roleplay Post:
The last time I roleplayed online was close to two years ago, discounting a time I played the role of Sour Grapes on a Strawberry Shortcake forum which crashed unexpectedly last summer. I have just spent an almost entirely fruitless hour looking for my old posts from dead boards. What I had really been wanting to make an example of was a Professor Sybill Trelawney post that I was a smidge proud of, as Sybill and Marina can be a bit similar in terms of mood swings. I can't find it, though, even though I used it as an example on other boards for years. So, instead, have my dramatic if regretfully short Irma Pince example.
Irma hadn't a clue as to the war beforehand. Not until the books were destroyed. It had happened so slowly. At first, she suspected there was nothing unusual in the least. Dust risen from some of the neglected novels, perhaps. With a roll of her eyes, she went to bed with a vow to dust the next day. She awoke to flames, slowly devouring the pages whole, ages and ages of knowledge devoured by a mind that would retain no wisdom.
The water from her tears did nothing to quelch the flames. Seeing Minerva in the Headmaster's chair did little to surprise her, and she had only one answer to the question proposed.
"Book suicide."
Her tone was brittled and pained, blunt as ever and now with more than enough good reason to be. There was no more of the world she knew. If the war didn't take the pinched-face woman, it was no secret that both already knew the risks of Irma accompanying the library into forgotten ash.
