I've always wanted a phil degree, although I've always wanted to not live in a box when I'm older, too. Next year I'll probably begin pursuing an econ major, although its likely to change knowing me.

Post your degree/trade skill/massage school certification

Extra points for those currently holding down a job in a completely unrelated field.

Unmarketable degrees? I wonder why people ever get those, seriously get a degree in a field that you can still get a decent job in. I'm working on Graphic Design and the job I'm at now has a place that I'll be going to after I get my degree.

I just find it funny that people get these unmarketable/useless degrees. Is there good reasoning behind this that I'm just not understanding?

A lot of people believe that undergraduate major doesn't matter because its often irrelevant once you get into grad school, or that employers will hire you based on the loosely related skills associated with it (ie. being able to write well from a comparative literature degree). Either way, I call BS.

I guess you CAN major in interpretive dance and then hope to get into law school, but yeah, not much of a safety net in these turbulent times...

It's silly, I mean seriously. A degree in something that has little meaning is only going to have a use in maybe one or two places in this world and even then if you are REALLY that devoted to it, you'll go out to do it and that is fine. Most people don't do that. Most people waste money and time on classes and majors that are useless to them because they won't do anything with it.

I wanted to be a poli sci for a long time; my dad ultimately dissuaded me based on his experience with it.

my brother has a double major in poli sci and economics. he works for ryder truck company in their sales division now. i guess that's unrelated. i'm just out of college with a double major in computer science and history and that's gotten me squat so far, then again the job market blows.

wanna know what a completely unmarketable major is right now? marketing. the industry is in the fkn toilet. basically right now for people just out of college it's either work an hourly job until the market recovers, go to grad school, or go teach conversational english to business people in another country. at least those are the things i keep hearing. that and bullshit insurance sales jobs that anyone can get.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, yet my job is primarily doing data entry at a mail-order pharmacy! I didn't even need to go to college for it...

However, I loved majoring in sociology and don't regret it. I do wish I would've double-majored in something more lucrative, though.
