Life has never been easy for Sam and Dean Winchester and it doesn't look like it's going to get easy anytime soon. The road so far has been long, hard, and the boys have lost everything but each other along the way. In a single night, Dean Winchester lost his life due to the deal he made out of brotherly love, leaving Sam to face the world alone. With Ruby seemingly dead and Lilith still on the loose, a grieving Sam Winchester cut off ties and continued what his father and brother had started.

While Sam was fighting his battle with grief and demons, another war was brewing on the home front. As Dean suffered in Hell, Lilith knew that times were changing. The movements of demons on earth had not gone unnoticed, and those from another place altogether had sent reinforcements. Knowing that the demonic world would soon suffer and her plans might never be realized, Lilith struck a deal with another demon and one of the fallen angels. Abaddon, demon of the Abyss, and Azrael, Archangel of death. For Abaddon it was a way out of his own personal prison. . .for Azrael it was a surefire way back into the gates that he had long ago been cast from. With Abaddon came another army, bigger than that which breached the gates the Winchesters mistakenly let open. . .an army of demons and damned souls not meant to be unleashed until the time set at the beginning of time. While Sam fought his battle internally, other forces gathered for a threat greater than the world had ever seen. Immortals, long standing and existing since the beginning of time, began to involve themselves in the mortal world they had distanced themselves from, led by Duncan MacLeod. The war was only just beginning. . .

This seems to be the rule the Winchesters are best at defying. . .and being buried alive was no exception. Dean Winchester rose from the grave, brought back by the hand of a higher power he did not believe in nor did he trust. Castiel, an angel on earth, claimed to be working for a deity that Dean had long since lost faith in. But whether Castiel was the real angelic deal or not, Dean knew that there was still answers to be found and a battle to be fought. Reunited with Sam, there was no way for Dean to know that his destiny was as great as his brother’s. Duncan MacLeod, on the other hand, knew that the young hunter that could not die was nothing short of what he himself was. Immortal. But the time had not yet come for Dean to find out the truth of himself, so Duncan was charged with waiting and watching. Meanwhile Sam held back from his brother, secrets of a life he had led while Dean was in Hell. Working with Ruby, Sam had honed his demon-given powers to a fine weapon and was using them to continue the fight without Dean. Now with Dean back, Sam had secrets to keep and a fear of telling his brother the truth. Yet secrets now might destroy them all. . .

One evil is traded for another and this time the threat is an ancient darkness, a timeless evil. His brother back, Sam must readjust to what he had cut himself off from and decide whether or not his secret is worth keeping or revealing. All the while Castiel has his own plans and orders, a mysterious force in the background with intentions that neither side are sure they can fully trust.
