QUOTE
Her breath coming in harsh pants Emily continued to run deeper still into the darkness. She wasn't far enough. Not yet. She had to keep running. The dense forest made it harder for her, the branches scratching against the pale exposed flesh that wasn't covered by her dress. The grounding was slippery thanks to the morning's rain making her bare feet slide against the mud and slickened grass. No one was after her anymore. They couldn't be. Yet she still needed to get away. However far her legs would carry her, so she must continue on. Time passed as each step became echoed by sharp pains shooting up her legs, but she couldn't quit. If she stopped now it would all come back. The pain. The sorrow. The memories.

She would run forever if it only meant she could forget it all. To live in peace with just this moment. But she couldn't. Her legs finally caved in beneath her and she fell in a crumpled heap to the ground the tattered white dress swirling around her legs. As if sensing her defeat the tears she'd been fighting fell freely, the awkward choking sobs rising from her throat. The tears washed away any ounce of strength she'd have claimed to have left her small frame trembling as she attempted to swallow them and salvage some pride. Soul racking sobs turned to gentle hiccups as the last remnants of the morning sun disappeared beyond the horizon. Using unsteady hands she pushed herself back onto her feet her legs throbbing with the pain of her afternoon flight.

She was so far from anything familiar that she didn't know what was left for her. She couldn't go back, and she was too frightened to go forward. What was she going to do now? Emily's arms wrapped around her torso in an effort to comfort herself, but couldn't fight off the chill that had settled deep within her. As her tears did, the doubts and voices came back in a rush. She could have been a bride by now. Settled with her husband and working on their first child. John would have supported her, cared for her, loved her, but now it was too late. She was of the damned. The accursed. Clothed in one man's dress. Yet marked with another's bite....
