"Jessica honey, can you come sit down for a minute, your father and I would like to talk too. And for heavens sake, leave your phone in your purse -- this is important!" The brunette paused at the front door, considering just going back outside and getting in her car again, she decided against it though -- whatever it was her parents looked pretty serious. It didn't seem like Jessica was about to get any kind of reward from her parents, something had happened and she couldn't help but be a little worried to find out. Slowly the girl removed her coat, setting it on the stairs next to her purse, glancing at her phone (2 new messages) before dropping it on top of the bag and making her way over to where her parents were sitting and waiting for her. Cautiously, the girl lowered herself into the couch across from them, waiting for whatever news they felt the need to hit her with.

"We've arranged for you to be a part of a student exchange program," the brunette's eyes lit up at the thought, maybe they were sending her to California, or somewhere foreign, like Paris, or maybe Italy. Jessica had always loved travelling, she found it exciting, in a moment the girl was lost in a whimsical world that involved her being very very far from Seattle, and having quite the adventure. "Jessica honey," her mother said, recognizing the distracted state immediately, "You're going to Texas."

"Texas?!" The brunette repeated, shock lacing her expression as she looked at her mother. What was there to do in Texas? That wasn't an adventure, that was, she didn't even know anything about Texas. "Why Texas?!" She repeated, green eyes flashing from her mother to her father and then back again.

Her father didn't say anything, just turned to look at his wife who was playing the apparent leader of the house roll. "We haven't been impressed by how you've been acting in the last little while, your grades are meager at best, you hardly go to school. You spend all your time with your friends, your boyfriend, and on your phone."

"But that's normal," the girl responded with a huff, slouching back in the seat and crossing her arms over her chest. It was apparent that she wasn't happy about this choice, yes she wanted to leave, but only to get away from her parents, and only if that place promised to be of more interest then home. Texas didn't sound interesting on any aspect. Texas sounded like the middle of nowhere, lets go ride a horse and pretend that we're in the twenty first century. It sounded like compelte boredom, it sounded like it was exile.

"Jessica," her mother said sharply, cutting off what would have become a rant on their daughters part when she had formulated her thoughts, "You are going to McKinnely High. Or you can stay here. With an escort too school and back, no cell phone, no socializing and no credit cards." Jessica's face fell at the ultimatum as her mother continued, "This is your senior year, we want you to go to college, you need to grow up. You're throwing everything away!"

Maybe on another day Jessica would have fought it, but not then, the choice was simple, either stay and be miserable with her parents breathing down her neck, or go, and hope to God that she could find something to keep herself occupied. "Fine. I'll go."

"Two weeks," her mother said as she stood up, "You're leaving first day of Spring Break."

Jessica watched as her parents left the room, leaving her alone on the couch. She sighed as she crossed her legs, trying to wrap her brain around what was going on. Her parents didn't want her around because she wasn't trying hard enough? Well, she had tried that, but it hadn't gotten her anywhere, and the way she was living her life now was much more fun. She wiped an imaginary wrinkle from her dress, almost wishing her mother to come back and yell surprise, and claim that it was a joke. Yet no one came back. After two minutes the girl sat up, grabbing her things from the staircase and heading back out the door, immediately on her phone.

'My life sucks. Cum meet me @ mall. Wnt shoes.'

All of that seemed a life time away though, the brunette was currently sitting in the passenger seat of a truck, frown permanently plastered on her face. It was clear to anyone that she was not happy, and that she didn't belong their. White jeans, pink tank top and black heels were much more suited for the streets of the city, not for the middle of nowhere in Texas. Her frown deepened as she glanced at the phone in her hands, lifting her sunglasses to get a better look, she didn't even have cell service here! What kind of godforsaken place was this? A minute later it was back, then it was gone again, it continued in this manner for the duration of the drive.

By the time the vehicle came to a stop all Jessica wanted to do was collapse into a warm bath and try her best to forget that she was even there. Which didn't seem very likely, she turned her head as the driver spoke, trying to remember what his name was. It didn't matter, this was just someone her parents had arranged to drive her to the ranch. She pulled the headphones for her ipod out of her eyes, raising an eyebrow, "Sorry, what did you say?" She asked quietly, absentmindedly twirling the headphone around her finger.

"I said you'll have to get out here," the man repeated gruffly.

Jessica bit her lip, setting her sunglasses back on her head as she turned to look out the window. "You're joking," she said with a laugh, the car had come to a stop next to a break in a fence and a dirt road leading to a house in the distance. "Why can't you drive me to the door?" she said gesturing out the window, it was a good fifteen minute walk from the door of the car to the front of the house. Jessica didn't even want to think about co-ordinating her suitcase down the bumpy road.

"This is where I got told to drop you off," the man said with a shrug, looking forward, "Now get going, I gotta get back."

Her face fell as she slowly picked her jacket up off the seat next to her, and slipped it on, shoving her phone into the pocket. "Can you at least help me get my stuff?" She asked sharply as she opened the door. The man muttered something under his breathe before he got out, going to the back and dropping the several suitcases on the side of the road. All Jessica did was watch as her things were put on the ground, then the man tipped his hat to her, got back in the truck and drove off.

Jessica wrinkled her nose at the smell, glancing down at her feet, dirt was so -- well dirty, and the awful smell that reached her nose, she shook her head, looking back at the house. There was no way she was going to walk that, especially with all of her stuff. "I'll wait for someone to come get me," she said to herself, as if that would bring someone to come and get her. The girl plonked herself down on her suitcase, pulling her phone out of her pocket again trying to find the phone number for the people she was staying with. If only her phone would keep a signal long enough for her to make a call.

“Cody, come down to the house.” His father yelled, hanging out the front door.

“Comin’ Pa.” Cody yelled back with a strong southern twang. The boy wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead and gave his horse a pat, before leaving the stables. He had been working all morning as usual, but today he tried not to get so dirty and sweaty. Smelling like a pig pen wouldn’t be the best way to greet the exchange student that was coming to stay with them.

“Oh, there you are son.” His father said as Cody walked through the doorway. “What took ya so long? That exchange student girl is supposed to be here any minute now.”

Cody nodded. “Alright, I’ll go wait for her out on the porch.” He said and walked back outside. Before he sat down, Cody looked down to make sure that he looked decent. The light brown flannel that he wore was slightly wrinkled and there was a bit of dirt on his new cowboy boots. He tucked the bottom of his shirt into his blue jeans, brushed some of the dirt off of his dark, brown boots and then sat down.

Nervousness came over him as he waited for the girl to show up. All morning he was distracted with work, but he was forced to think about it now that it was minutes away from her arrival. Cody never really had an experience like this one before. Sure, he had people stay over, but that was his friends and family. This girl that was coming was a complete stranger.

“Oh, wait a minute.” Cody whispered to himself. “The girl does have a name.” This whole time he had been referring to her as ‘the girl’, ‘her’, and ‘the exchange student’. No one would appreciate being called ‘that person’. Cody felt somewhat like a bad person now even though the girl doesn’t even now that he has done it.

“What did the exchange program say her name was again?” he pondered. “Oh, that’s right.” He said, a little louder than a whisper this time. “It’s Jess.” He tried to picture what the girl would look like and hoped that she was nice. Surely the people at the exchange program considered both the personality of the student and the family they would be staying with. They wouldn’t want problems between the family and the exchange student.

While he was thinking about what Jess might be like and trying to calm himself, he hadn’t realized that Jess was late. “Hey, Ma! She still hasn’t showed up yet.” He yelled in the direction of the screen door.

A short lady came to the door. “Huh, she should have been here by now.” His mother said. She came out onto the porch and looked around. “Maybe she got lost or is havin’ trouble with her bags or somethin’. You should go look for her, Cody.” She said.

Cody nodded. “Alright. I’ll be back soon.” He said and headed off to find Jess.

Once he got near the top of the hill he saw a girl with a lot of luggage surrounding her. Well, she definitely was not what Cody expected. She was more… What was the word he was looking for? Rich. That was a good word for it. Jess was richer looking. There was something else he was getting from her. She seemed like she would be snotty. Cody definitely not one to judge people by the way they look, but this time he just had that feeling. Usually he was very nice but she looked like she could use some straightening out.

“I’m guessin’ you’re Jess.” He said as he got closer. “With all this luggage ya have here, I hope you have somethin’ better than that to wear for workin’. All that high falutin’ clothes and high heels just aren’t gonna cut it when you’re working on a ranch.” He said and picked up one of the bags. “And ya ain’t gonna get no bars out here. You’ll have to forget about that cell phone of yours while you’re here.”

Jessica had to force herself to smile, she knew that frown lines were bad for ehr face, besides there was no one around to see her obvious unhappiness. She brushed a loose curl out of her eyes as she looked around, why had her parents sent her to the middle of nowhere? It wasn't like she had been doing anything wrong, she had just gotten a little distracted, that was all. Besides, Jessica knew as well as her parents that her future did not lie in something revolving around school, she didn't even want to go to college, but her parents hadn't given her that many options when it came to that as well.

She slipped her phone back into her pocket, crossing her arms over her chest, tapping her foot on the side of her suitcase in rhythm to the beat of her music. The girl's head snapped in the direction of the boy as he spoke, eyebrow raising ever so slightly, he was talking to her, wasn't he. Well, at least someone knew she was supposed to be there, she half expected to sit there until her iPod died. Which could have easily happened, Jess was very stubborn when it came to her position on something, stubborn to the point of acting stupid some would say. Besides, Jess was more content to sit on the side of the road and zone out then dare admit that this was all actually happening to her, for the longest time she had continued to hope it was just a bad dream, but there was no such luck.

"Work?" Jess repeated, the word landing in the air like she thought it was the filthiest thing in the world. Jessica did not work, not that she wasn't capable, just historically speaking she wasn't very good at it. Besides, who needed to work when their parents had tons of money to throw at the children they never spend time with. Then again, Jess wasn't at home anymore, and things were going to be very different out here. "wait, what?" She asked, shaking her head, finally processing the last part of what the boy had said. Perhaps Jess could handle work, but not having cell service was going to kill her. "You're joking, how is there no cell service here?" Wasn't this America?

She slowly slid off the suitcase, picking one of the bags to sling over her shoulder. He had to be joking, that was all, some practical joke as a way of initiating her into being in this godforsaken situation. She grabbed the handle of one of the other suitcases dragging it behind her a few feet. "Can you handle those?" She asked, eyes darting back to the four remaining bags balanced on top of each other. To say the least it appeared that Jessica was oblivious, and was obviously expecting this boy to be her servant.

Cody tried to hold back a laugh. He couldn’t believe she had just said the word work like that. This girl seriously didn’t do any work? Cody had been working on the ranch almost all of his life. He actually wasn’t that surprised though. Her perfectly manicured nails and lack of wanting to walk down to the house by herself gave that away.

Cody sighed. Now, she was complaining about no cell phone. Great. I feel a lot of complaining in these next few days. He thought. This girl acted like she was going to die if she couldn’t use her cell phone for a day, let alone too weeks. Hopefully she would get over that soon. Cody didn’t want to hear her complaining about not being able to use her precious phone. “The ranch is just one of those far off places where you can’t get any cell service. There is a phone you can use if you need to call your parents or somethin’.” He said.

After Jess stood up, Cody grabbed some of the bags. Wait. Had she really just asked him to carry all these bags while all she took were those two? She must be expecting him to be her slave. “Of course I can handle them.” He said and picked up the bags. Handing her one of the other bags he said, “But, I think you should take at least one more bag. Don’t give me any mean looks either. I’m going easy on you since it’s your first day here.” He said with a smile.

He continued down the hill, carrying the three bags. Jess would have to take it if she really wanted the bag because Cody wasn’t going to do it. He was going to make her take it down or it would be left there until she decided that she needed it. He looked back to see if she was coming.

It really wasn't Jessica's fault that she acted the way that she did, blame her parents, they were the type who had preferred to throw money at the girl and give her everything she wanted -- rather than spend any actual time with their daughter. Sometimes, Jessica wondered what it would be like to actually spend time with her parents, and to go and do fun things, rather than just take Daddy's credit card shopping and pretend that she hated them. Occasionally, she missed them, but there was no point in missing something that you never really head.

The girl shook her head at his suggestion she might want to call her parents, "No its fine. Do you have internet at least?" This was going to be insanely difficult for her if she had no way to communicate with the world back home, what about her friends, what about her boyfriend? Surely they missed her. Or maybe not, they would be having the time of their lives while she was stuck in the middle of nowhere, entirely cut off from civilization.

Jessica raised an eyebrow, but took the bag from Cody nonetheless, she swung it over her shoulder with a huff, a small frown on her face. "Fine," she said with a roll of her eyes, with the same attitude she would have given her teachers at school. Green eyes watched as the boy started walking down towards the house, why couldn't he have brought a vehicle up to get her? Was it really necessary for them to have to walk?

When the boy looked back at her she inwardly groaned before starting after him, how was she supposed to survive here. Maybe she could just stay for a few days, claim she had learned her lesson and then beg to be brought back home. Not likely that it would work though. "So whats your name," she asked as she fell into step behind him.

Cody shook his head. “We have a computer, but no internet. You can use the internet at school though.” He answered her question. At least she would have some internet access. She couldn’t be as mad at him, could she? Well, Cody was hoping anyway.

He continued down, in the direction of the house. “My name is Cody.” He said. Cody tried to think of something else to say. Well, since she was already pretty much ticked off already, he might as well tell her what work she’ll have to be doing while she is here. Why not let her get all her anger out now?

“I guess I’ll tell you what you’ll be doing while you’re here. We wake up at 5:30 every morning. Once you are settled in I will show you around. There are a lot of horses on the ranch that you will have to help take care of. And . . .” Cody stopped what he was saying. Now that he really thought about it, Jess complained about everything he had told her about the ranch so far. He wondered why she had even come here to stay at the ranch. He figures it probably wasn’t her idea.

Just then he realized that he stopped mid sentence and hadn’t spoken for a few minutes. Jess probably was giving him a strange look right at this moment. He turned to face her. “Sorry about that. I just thought of something.” He said, turning his head to face forward again. “We’re almost there. Not too long before we reach the house now. So… Why did you join the student exchange program and come here? I mean, you don’t seem very happy about being here or anything about here for that matter.” He said, curiously waiting for the answer.

Jessica couldn't believe it, no internet, she had to wait til she was back at school so she would be able to use it? Jessica had never wanted to be at school, for any reason, so it seemed to be ironic that for her to maintain the contact with the outside world that she was desperate for (after all, who could be without facebook for more than a day) that she would need to go back to school. Who would ever think she would be looking forward to going to school. All she wanted to do was crawl into a hole in die, or at least hide until it was time for her to go home and get away from this god-awful place, couldn't she just tell her person that she had learned her lesson and beg them to bring her back home? Things only seemed to be interested in getting worse, and Jessica wasn't holding out on things getting any better.

Jessica stopped straight in her tracks when Cody told her they would be waking up at 5:30 in the morning. "Are you insane!?" She exclaimed, shock and disbelief lining her features, "Who in their right mind willingly wakes up at five in the morning?" She shook her head as she finally started following him once more more. Jessica had become very talented at sleeping to the last possible moment, before jumping out of bed, showering, dressing and bolting out the door.

"Cody," she said with a sigh, "Do you honestly think I would come here? Willingly? Intentionally?" She resisted the urge to comment on why anyone would come there, because she hadn't seen anything there that would make her want to be there willingly. "This was my parents decision, obviously," She said as she brushed her hair out of her face, "They ddn't approve of how I was spending my time back at home, thats all," the brunette shook her head as she walked. "Is there any food at your house at least?"

Cody laughed. “Nope, definitely not insane.” He said. “You mean you, wait what am I talking about? Why would I think you would wake up that early in the morning? I must be insane if I thought that.” He laughed again. “What time do you get up?” he asked.

“Actually no, I didn’t think that you would come here willingly. I figured that you were probably forced to come here. I thought I should ask though. It isn’t always the best thing to just jump to conclusions.” He said.

“Food?” Cody laughed at the girl’s question. “Of course there is food at my house. There is a good bit of it, as a matter of fact.” He told her.

“You know, even though you’re complaining know and wish that you weren’t here, I think you’re gonna end up liking it here. I know that may be hard to believe, but I think that you’ll end up loving it here.” He said. Cody wasn’t lying. He really did think that she would learn to love living at the ranch. He had always really liked his life on the ranch. It was peaceful, the animals were a joy to be around, and he had great parents. Jess may have been complaining, but this was just a different kind of situation for her. Cody believed that she just had to adapt to this lifestyle and she would be fine.

“This is it.” He said, leading her up to the house. He pulled the bags up over the steps and then sat them down on the porch so he could open the door for Jess. The door led into a small entryway, with a stairway to the right of them, on the left was the living room, and straight ahead was the kitchen.
“I’ll show you to your room, and then you can get unpacked. After that, I’ll show you around the house and the ranch."

"As late as I possibly can," she said with a laugh and a slight shake of her head. True, she would probably find it easier to wake up in the morning if she didn't always stay up so late into the night texting and chatting, but there were only 24 hours in a day and Jessica was the type who didn't want to miss anything. Consequently, she would only fall asleep when she was completely exhausted which made it a little hard for her to wake up in the morning.

Jessica sighed, flipping her hair out of her face, "Yeah, its definitely not my choice. As far from it as possible actually." She nodded her head in approval when he said that there was at least food in house, "Excellent, you wanna make me an omelette when we get in?" She asked, entirely serious about having him cook for her. Jessica wasn't the most capable when it came to things in the kitchen, she couldn't even boil water successfully.

She gave him a peculiar look over his notion that she might begin to enjoy being there, "Right," she said, shaking her head. "If I change my mind you'll be first to know," Jessica said under her breath. It was going to take something pretty amazing to make her happy to be there, she was quite content to whine and complain about it as much as it was necessary. Jessica had never appreciated change, she liked her life the way it was, and the last thing she wanted was for it to get more complicated.

"Doesn't look too bad," Jessica said with an approving nod as she walked up the porch. Dropping her stuff in a pile by the door, "It's actually kind of quaint looking..." She tilted her head to the side admiring it for a moment, "Sure, that sounds good. But what about food?"

Cook for her? Cody didn’t even cook for himself. His mom cooked every meal his family ate. Work was really the only thing Cody did. He never learned how to cook because his job was to work and that’s what he did constantly. The only things he could make were easy things that didn’t require an oven.

“That would be a nice trick.” He said. “I don’t cook. I can make some basic things but my ma always cooks the meals.”

Cody was surprised when Jess actually gave somewhat of a compliment. ‘Doesn’t look too bad’ wasn’t exactly the best, or even considered by most people, a compliment, but when it came from the queen of complaints Cody accepted whatever he could get. “Well, I’m glad you like it.” He said.

“We’ll be eating soon. If you are really that hungry then I guess we can find something for you to eat, but my ma cooks big meals so I wouldn’t want you to ruin your appetite. The food she makes is amazing. You’re gonna love it!” he said.

Cody picked the bag up that he had carried down to the house. As he started up the steps he said, “I’m gonna take these bags upstairs. Your room is just right up here, if you wanna follow me. If you want to grab something to snack on you can walk into the kitchen right there to look for something.”

He continued up the stairs and made a right into the guest bedroom which would be Jessica’s while she stayed there, and sat the bags down beside the bed.

"Guess we do have something in common," Jessica said with a small laugh, honestly surprised that she and Cody had something similar between the two of them. "Except my parents didn't cook," she sighed softly and shrugged her shoulders, "Either we went out. Or sometimes there would be a chef, I don't really know, there was always food." Jessica didn't actually remember her mother making her food, even when she had been sick and in bed, it had been the maid that had brought chicken soup up to Jessica. Not that it really mattered though, those were the comforts she was used too, it hadn't really occurred to Jessica that things could be different.

Well until now at least. She couldn't really imagine a mother making a huge meal, things were different here though, and the least she would have to do would be to just experience it. She was hungry though, she hadn't eaten since she left her house, she hadn't bothered to buy anything at the airport, it hadn't come to mind.

Jessica watched as Cody started up the stairs with some of her stuff, taking a small glance towards the kitchen. She considered going and finding something to eat, but she didn't really feel comfortable just looking through their cupboards. She could wait til dinner, besides she had to unpack her stuff right? And before she knew it, it would be time to eat. Cody had talked about it like it was pretty amazing, so she couldn't help but be a little excited. A real home cooked meal, it probably beat going out for take out right?

She grabbed the remaining bags as she went up the stairs, dropping them into the doorway of the guest room. She resisted the urge to ask him if that was it, her room back home may have been way bigger, but she had already come to realize that things were going to be much different here then they were at home. Jessica slowly crossed from the door to the bed, sitting down on the edge of it. "This is nice..." she said cautiously, she couldn't help but suspect that something was going to happen though and make it not so nice, but she had to try and be a little bit positive didn't she. "So whats the plan for today?" She queried, trying to seem like she cared about what was going on. She didn't really, but sometimes it was best to pretend one did.

“Really? I knew there had to be at least one thing we had in common.” Cody was surprised that Jess had something in common with him. He had hoped that whoever the person was that came to stay with them would have some similarities, but once he met Jess those hopes had almost completely left his mind. Maybe they would end up getting along pretty well.

“You had a chef? That must have been nice.” Cody’s family could never afford to get a professional chef to come cook for them. This didn’t really bother him though. His mother was a great cook and he didn’t mind going without expensive things like hiring a chef.

“Oh. I’m glad you like the room.” He said. Cody walked over and grabbed a bag that Jess had dropped in the doorway and moved it over with the bags he put beside the bed. “Well, not much. Mostly just having you settle in at the house. I’ll show you around the house and the ranch. I know that it sounds kinda boring. Sorry about that. But if you’re not too tired from your trip here, then later we can go horse back riding. It’s really fun.” Cody knew that being shown around houses and being told what work someone would have to do didn’t sound very fun at all, but horse back riding could make up for that. He believed that just going and being near a horse could make someone’s day better. Horses, especially Cody’s horse, Stardust, could always make him feel better when he was having a bad day.

“We should probably be going back down stairs now. You’ll have to meet my parents and it should be time to eat in a few minutes.” Cody walked out of the room and headed down the staircase. Just as they were nearing the last few steps his mother walked out from the kitchen.

“There you two are. I thought I heard someone come in the house.” She looked over at Jess and said, “Hello. It’s very nice to meet you. I'm Mrs. Gibbs, but you can call me mom while your here.” She held out her hand. “You made it just in time to try my home cookin’. I hope you’re hungry because there’s lots of food out there. Come on, dear follow me.” She said, leading the way. There was a medium sized table that sat in the middle of the room. Cody’s dad was already sitting at the table. Plates of food covered almost the entire table.

Just because they had something in common didn't necessarily mean that Jessica expected them to get along as if they were the best of friends, she was just trying to do her best to try and find something positive about the situation. She knew that wollowing in her own misery wasn't necessarily the best option, even though it would often be the easiest one. It was unfortunate that she was looking on things with such a bitter outlook, but she was fairly used to getting her own way, after all her parents had been the types to throw money rather then to give attention.

"It was okay," she said with a slight shrug of her shoulders in regards to the chef, it had never seemed like a big deal to her, it was fairly normal in the environment that she had grown up with. Everyone had chefs, fancy cars, and distanced relationships with the rest of their families.

A smile was all that she offered him in thanks when he moved one of the bags for her, she didn't feel like unpacking. Things may have been nice-ish there, but for some reason Jessica still couldn't see herself staying. Soon enough she would be able to convince her parents that she had had some complete change of heart, and then she would be back home with her friends, she'd be sleeping in her own room and maybe she would have a bit of awareness after being removed for a few days. Nonetheless, Jessica did not see this situation being permanent, she wouldn't allow it to be.

"Horseback riding?" She repeated with a questionable look on her face, Jessica had never been horseback riding before, out of all the outtings and things that her parents had paid for going riding had never been one of them. "I don't think I'd be very good at that," she said matter of factly, a look of concern slowly spreading across her features. That was the last thing she needed, some kind of accident involving her attempting to ride a horse. She didn't even recall if she'd ever been close enough to touch one before.

She was kind of surprised when Cody just up and left the room, so she quickly stood up to follow him. Jessica followed him down the stairs, a little shocked when Cody's mother appeared to greet them. Jessica shook the woman's hand, nodding her head when she said that she could call her mom while she was here. That wasn't something that she saw happening in the near future, but she didn't care to tell her that she wouldn't. Slowly she made her way into the kitchen lowering herself into a chair, "It looks good," she said with a nod, marvelling at the amount of fresh cooked food laid out on the plates before her. She gave Cody a tentative look, wondering if she could just dig in or if they needed to wait.

“You mean you never rode a horse before? I think you’d be just fine at it.” He said. “Why don’t we try it and if you don’t like it then we don’t have to ride horses no more. Unless you really don’t want to even try then I guess we could find something else to do.” Cody said.

Cody tried not to laugh when his mom told Jessica that she could call her mom. His mother definitely did not know Jess yet. Cody knew that she didn’t want to be here, so he highly doubted that the girl would ever call her mom.

When Jess looked over at him at the table he gave her look as if to say that she needed to wait before she could start eating.

“Thank you very much. I worked hard on making a big meal since you were coming.” Mrs. Gibbs said in her usual cheerful voice. “First, we will pray and then you can dig in and eat as much as you want.” She smiled and then closed her eyes to begin the prayer.

Cody leaned over toward her and whispered to her, “ I don’t know if you’re really religious or not, so you don’t have to pray if you don’t want to.”

Mrs. Gibbs led the prayer. “Amen.” She said after she finished. “Alright now we can eat.”
