Marcus was a man in his mid-thirties with a slim athletic build that allowed him to fit anywhere there was electrical wiring that would be needed to be fixed on Station 109XBT. His short cropped sandy blonde hair was under a baseball cap. A sport he had only read about, watched when vids could be found, and imagined in his head. For you see Marcus had not been Earth born, nor had he been born in the Gaia Solar System. He in fact had been born on colony ship number thirteen. He had grown up on a terraformed moon not far from the station but he ha the call of space in his blood not that of a farmer. Sadly he his family had never been rich enough to send him to a proper academy for training in space so Marcus had put himself through a trade program for electrical engineering of space travel vehicles. After many ships and years of work he had landed the job here on Station 109XBT over the moon he had grown up on. In other words he could live on the moon but still catch a shuttle to the station every morning.

Today he was repairing some wires that had melted when a water tank had sent water hot enough through the pipes that several people were in the hospital ward with third degree burns and it had melted the wires that had been run along the pipe. Marcus was now replacing the wire and padding them in foam so it won’t happen again.

“Dex can you place solder these two together please.” Marcus asked holding the wires toward what looked like a dented yellow tin box. This box was in fact a robot that was called Human Fine Motor Skills Dexterity Unit or in this case Dex as Marcus called his. The name was even block painted on the side of the unit. It went everywhere but out on the town with Marcus since it was what saved him from having to take pieces of work out of the tubes and to a work station several levels lower than what he was working. The little unit was made to care tools that Marcus might need. It could also measure and cut wire. Hold wire in place or cold solder it. Dex had a few extras like being able to place music as well and speak to Marcus. Sadly Dex only spoke in binary.

Dex had scurried to keep up with his human companion. How these carbon lifeforms worked was beyond him. When his friend Marcus held out wires Dex automatically soldiered them together.

Of course the easy translation to that was “Why do I always have to do the hard work?” and “So easy to just hold the wires”. Of course most of that was just Dex being Dex and giving Marcus a hard time. When Marcus had fixed him so he would be more than the usual Human Fine Motor Skills Dexterity Units it became clear to the unit that number one it was male and number two he was friends with Marcus. Dex relaxed and settled back to wait for another order playing “boogie fever” quietly through his little speakers.

“Don’t complain you little blighter. At least you don’t get cramped and I never shove you places I can’t get myself.” Marcus scolded Dex as he took the fixed wire wrapping it deftly with new plastic coating. This wire was then tied to its mates before he wrapped it in the foam padding. This complete bundle was once more hooked onto the hot water pipe. Marcus checked that it would hold before nodding his head. “We are moving.”

Marcus took his tool box and shoved it down to the next melted spot. He worked his body down on his back. He was sure by the time he was done with this tube his normally dark blue coveralls would be that heather gray with streaks of white and black from the grime he would come in contact with. It meant that he would have to send a cleaner down this tube since it smelled like it had not been done in a while. Looking at the wires he pulled a scrapper out starting to peel the melted plastic from the copper pipe. When he had it free he began to cut the wires apart trying to identifying which ones were which. After the song started for the third time when he asked well more like stated. “Do you like any other song? I know you are programmed with more than hundred.” Marcus knew because he had programmed Dex with them.

Dex followed him along the passage ways bopping along to the beat of boogie fever. He loved that song, loved it like nothing else. When Marcus asked him to change it he did a few random clicks before huffing in his machine type way. Switching it through he dialed through his favorites before coming up on their favorite song. Setting his music on random he bopped along with his friend.

Come on the robot could be such a drama queen at times. Marcus hummed along to the music that was playing. He pulled some wires free offering them out to Dex. “Here since you like holding wires instead of doing one of your other functions can you please hold and code these for me? As you can see the colors have melted into a lovely brown. “ There that should make the little robot happy. After a few more moments of work Marcus asked. “Do you still have that book about baseball in your audio?” Hey he might as well educate himself on his favorite sport. Dex might not like it but Marcus did.

Dex seriously considered not speaking to the carbonite moron that he considered his friend but he wouldn’t. Giving an irritated beep he held onto the wires and started sorting and coding them slowly. Dialing over to the audiobook he mouthed off again before playing it.

“Do you always have to be such a snot?” Marcus asked as Dex gave him lip once more. He was testing and coding the wires in his hands as he removed the plastic. Without looking he commented. “Take the plastic off as well because if you don’t we will be here even longer than needed. I don’t need to report that you were slacking on the job, because it looks bad on both of us.” Marcus wondered for the hundredth time if anyone else had the issues with their units that he had with his. Then again most of the new members had not been around long enough to customize their units so they were not fond of a certain unit. He was sure in time that they would find one they liked and that it had its own kinks. Marcus paused in his musings and listening to the book to calmly add. “Thanks for changing it.”

“You know I can turn off your compression functions to basic reasoning if you want that way you are not bored doing your basic jobs and functions.” Usually this started with an offer and then went to Marcus threatening and finally Dex getting huffy. Marcus would let it go for a few moments before he attempted to plead with the robot to stop his pouting. Dex was such a temperamental little guy. “You do know its Marcus with a C right?” For anyone still wondering Marcus does speak binary he learned it when he was a child because he thought it was interesting. He and his siblings use to leave messages for each other in it. Their parents thought it was silly but since two of their sons went into fields where this is important than it’s a pretty good idea that the silly games helped out a lot. He knew in this case that Dex was doing it on purpose with spelling it with a K. “That is like me calling you Dexter or something like that.”

Turned out that the mainframe had a thing for bass beats and heavy noise when it came to it’s musical choices. He let out an evil mechanical beep that equated to his laugh. When Marcus asked for a wire he gave another irritated buzz and vibrated hotly as the man asked him for colored wires.
