YOU WERE THE MERMAID FOR ME - - - -
TIL ONE DAY, YOU FOUND YOUR FEET, LEAVING ME WITH THIS GOD-AWFUL BOTTLE, A MODEL OF HEARTACHE AND GRIEF
- - - - - - - - TELL ME FOREVER

The ocean surrounding the small fishing village churned and frothed, throwing wave after futile wave at the land it could barely reach. To one with an imagination, it looked like a great monster desperately trying to climb into the town with weak, inconsistent, liquefied arms. With every attempt, the water seemed to be making some headway; an inch closer here, an inch there. Ultimately, though, the blue giant would fall just short of land and tumble backwards, dejected, only to try again a moment later. Finally, it got frustrated enough to settle for catching the wind to spray the village with droplets. Ponyo giggled with delight, extending her neck outwards to catch the full force of the spray. Water permeated her thick, bright red tresses. With another laugh, she shook them dry, fondly remembering the magic days when it was impossible for her to get wet.

The sea seems so active today, she mused. Not angry, per se, but – restless. The 16-year old was sitting in the backyard of her current home, admiring her past one, as she so often did. The house was located on the highest point of the town, a tall hill – more of a skinny mountain, that jutted up from the land like a single finger pointing to the sky. Its backyard was faced away from the town, so all one could see was vast, uninterrupted ocean. Sosuke had shown her the spot not long after she moved in, and Ponyo loved it instantly. The serene view was excellent for meditation, not to mention the sentimental value, as it was only a few feet below that Sosuke had discovered her. Many days occurred where the redhead wanted to do nothing more than to sit at the gate separating lawn from cliff and stare out in a dreamy manner. Today, however, her time spent contemplating was not a willing choice, but a way to kill time. Too much time, it would seem, as Ponyo (returning to reality) feared the two teenagers would be late to class.

“Sosuke!” She yelled out, twisting her body to face the yellow house. How many times had she called that name since she met the boy eleven years ago? Too many to count, really. It had been her favorite word, besides “Ponyo”, when she was younger. Currently, though, she yelled it in worry rather than in happiness. “Hurry up!” She added, as if the boy might not realize the time. How stressful the life of a human was! When she still had her magic, and still retained her fish-like attributes, the girl could remember doing nothing but floating in a tank with her sisters for days on end. She had hated it then, of course, and was eager to escape. But she had unknowingly escaped to a life that only rarely allowed those living it to rest, instead constantly burdening them with school, work, and endless choices for the future. On one hand, it was exciting; on the other, exhausting. However, so far, Ponyo had yet to find herself wishing to be back in her father’s oppressive clutches.

Notes: I went ahead and had them heading off to school, but I know how tedious classroom roleplays get, so we don't have to actually have them in class. Roleplayers' prerogative haha

Sosuke ran around like a chicken without it's head, grabbing papers and books. After gathering a giant pile of papers and more books than he should be carrying, he shoved them into his backpack. Falling back onto his bed, he sighed. Teenage years seemed like a never ending cycle of busyness. Oh, how Sosuke wished he was five again. He didn't have to worry about loads of school work. He could just run around and play with Ponyo.

It had been many years since Sosuke found Ponyo down by the shore. Sometimes he found it silly when he thought about it, having a test of love at only the age of five. Of course, sosuke love and friendship were true, but when you're five years old do you really know if you will love that person forever? When someone is young, they have so much time and love for everything. Now, at the age of sixteen, Sosuke didn't know anymore. His love for her as a friend was still there, it just didn't seem as strong. Sosuke had mixed feeling about the situation.

Even though Sosuke knew that Ponyo hated being trapped by her father, she know had to live the same hectic human life as he did. Had he made the right choice? Sosuke asked himself this question many times. Once Ponyo promised to stay with him, she had to give up her powers.

Sosuke was pulled back to the real world by Ponyo's voice. "Coming Ponyo!" he yelled out the window. Grabbing his backpack, he ran downstairs and to the front door. He slipped on his shoes and ran out to the red head.

"Hey Ponyo." he said. "You ready?" Of course Sosuke knew the answer to this question. After all, Ponyo had been the one who was sitting out here waiting for him while he tried to gather up his mess of school supplies. Sosuke was the one who just rushed out the door.

Ponyo quickly ascended to her feet at the sound of a door opening. The backpack that had previously been resting on the ground beside her was no saddled onto her shoulders. It was visibly thinner and lighter than Sosuke’s mainly because, as even Ponyo would confess, she wasn’t as dedicated a student as the boy. Frequently, she was chastised for daydreaming in class, but she persistently continued. Her brown eyes met the other teenager’s own and offered a quick nod at his question. Though, after a moment, she added with a light giggle “But then, I’m not the one who spent so long getting ready.”

Eager to start her day, if only just to finish it, Ponyo walked past the boy toward the road leading down the mountain, tugging at the sleeve of his shirt to get him to follow. Eleven years of maturity, motivated by the sudden shift from ocean to land (where it was necessary), and the redhead still sometimes felt like a child when around her companion. Which resulted in some childish actions, like the pulling of Sosuke’s clothing. Ponyo was unsure exactly why she did them, just that it was – comforting almost; though she was careful to not exaggerate the actions in public. The flat slip-ons covering her feet made a slight ‘click’ as they switched from grass to concrete road. The school the two attended was a fair distance from their home atop the hill, but not unreachable, even if the girl could persuade her friend to walk instead of drive (which she did regularly; Ponyo was not a fan of cars).

As she ambled down the hill, simultaneously trying to keep her balance and hoping Sosuke was behind her, a faint call could be heard carried on the wind. “Have a good day at school, you two!” Brown eyes glanced back in time to see Lisa, Sosuke’s mother – and Ponyo’s surrogate, leaning out of a window, waving. The girl lifted a hand to wave back. It had certainly taken time to adapt to the idea that her guardians – her “parents” she supposed – were no longer an ocean goddess and a wizard. But Lisa and Koichi had served as excellent stand-ins, treating the stray girl with unrestrained kindness. She should’ve known only kind parents could produce a boy like Sosuke.

Sosuke laughed. He pulled up the strap of the heavy backpack that had begun to slip off his shoulder. When Ponyo pulled on his shirt he began to follow her down the mountain.

Ponyo often did little gestures like tugging his shirt, but Sosuke didn’t mind. It reminded him of when they were kids. Ponyo was a very unique girl, and Sosuke liked that about her.

He looked up when he heard his mother’s voice call out to them. Sosuke raised his arm and gave a small wave and a smile. He was so happy that his parents were so willing to take in Ponyo. If they had said that she couldn’t stay with them when they were young then Sosuke would have been devastated. Luckily, the boy had very kind and understanding parents. They loved Ponyo and would never have told her that they wouldn’t take care of her.

Once the two had made it to the bottom of the mountain, Sosuke stopped for a second to catch his breath. “ I don’t know how you keep talking me into walking to school Ponyo.” He said between breaths. Sosuke pulled on the straps of his backpack and started trudging back along the path they were walking.
