I had posted this to the Dragon Age comm on LiveJournal last week. It's not exactly "literature", but it is my own bit of rambling after beating my head against Plato's Republic while writing my fanfic and drinking way, way too much sweet tea. It's not every day your background as a Classical history major comes back to bite you direct from a fictional universe that threatens to devour your soul.... Link redirects to LiveJournal.com

This is an excellent posting! I loved it! You made some very interesting comparisons between Plato's works, and the Qunari, and it's very clarifying as well. I saw in the comments that you had a lot more you were musing about, and I'm quite curious. I wrote a wiki article, a while back, about the Qunari, for DART. (Do you mind if I link to this LJ post in the wiki article, btw?)

By all means, link away! I have a *lot* more musings than just what I posted there, but I kept it short because I was worried that LJ would scream at me for the file size or character count being too high. I'm still going through the Republic, and more and more little nuances jump out at me. I can continue to post my thoughts here, if you like, and add whatever you want to the wiki.

Hands down, your wiki entry is leaps and bounds better than the one on the actual DAwiki. Not only does yours follow a logical progression of information, but it goes into so much more *depth*. I especially liked your cantos from the Qun at the end. It reminded me a lot of of the Tao I Ching with the Ashkaari in place of the Sage.
Some things I found while reading the Republic most recently:
--Qunari wouldn't loot bodies. To focus on those dead while a living enemy might be fleeing or still attacking is dishonorable. This also ties to their virtual shunning of personal wealth.
--There are four cardinal virtues, being: courage, wisdom, temperance, and justice. To not uphold even one of these virtues is to lose honor. Courage makes the State valiant, and wisdom makes the State wise. Temperance is the harmonious song that courses through the entire population, weaving all the classes together and creating one contiguous and unbreakable whole. The just individual will never steal, never break an oath, never commit adultery or dishonor his family or fail in his duties, religious and otherwise. All of these things make the ideal State and make the Qunari what they are.
--Qunari warriors would rather die than allow themselves to be taken prisoner. As Plato says, “And he who allows himself to be taken prisoner may as well be made a present of to his enemies; he is their lawful prey, and let them do what they like with him.”

I shall add this to my Qun-cyclopaedia. Between you two, Chez and Teru I should be better versed in Qunari.
