Rules

The SwiftIRC network rules can be found here.

The additional rules enforced on this specific channel are the same as the Posting Rules for the forums.

Where?

Network: irc.swiftirc.net
Channel: #DCD

The official SwiftIRC site provides access to two different browser-based clients.
They can be found here.

How To Use: Browser Clients
  • Select one of the two browser-based clients from the page linked to above.
  • Enter your desired nickname. Bare in mind this must be unique across the entire SwiftIRC network, so your desired nickname may not be available.
  • Enter the channel name "#DCD" without the quotation marks.
  • Hit the Enter Chat button.
How To Use: Registering & Voice

To talk in the #DCD channel, you must first register your nickname.
  • First, make sure you have a nickname that is available and that you want to keep. You can change your nickname by typing "/nick newname" without the quotation marks, where "newname" is your new nickname.
  • To register the nickname you're currently using, type "/ns register password password email email" without the quotation marks, where "password" is your desired password, and "email" is a valid email address.
  • Check your inbox, and validate your registration as instructed in the email.
Note that nicknames expire after 60 days of inactivity.

How To Use: Logging In

To log in, or "identify" on subsequent visits, simply reassume your registered nickname and type "/ns id password" without the quotes, where "password" is, err, your password.

Ouch...problem...Norton just hit something.

The link provided in "They can be found here" for the "Where" part of things just sprang something. Apparently there are 3 threats (drive-by downloads) that can hit.

There's nothing there. Norton is just being Norton, and flagging everything but itself. It's easy enough to find a decent, free IRC client, if you'd be happier with that.

There is also Mibbit web based irc. I'm hopping Pidgin will get their IRC straightened out at some point... it's kinda sad they do proprietary protocols better than the ancient open source one.

EDIT:
Odd it seems like mibbit is banned from swift... But I joined the channel from mibbit before adding it to Pidgin? O.o

You can go here and type stuff in and it will work... I'm not sure why the other one doesn't work.

Ah they use a different webchat server now that I can see the reason message... fixed the link...

EDIT: Is everyone still using the chat Ray posted, or can we change it to the one sigilbaram put up?

YEAY!! Alex Wildfire showed me ChatZilla. Now I don't have to worry about a thing. ^_^

So, I'll try and drop into the shat from time to time (the rest of this week will be tough, though, since I'm working late).

Axel. AXEL. A-*X-*-E-L.
Like the Streets of Rage character, or Kingdom Hearts.

Unrelatedly I don't recommend using a mibbit widget because mibbit's functionality is relatively low and it has an annoying glitch where it will simply fail to show any PMs you have. If you use Firefox you can use the Chatzilla plugin, for which I assume there is a Google Chrome equivalent; otherwise IceChat seems pretty solid.

Mibbit seems as functional as any of the other web based IRC clients but has a much more polished interface. As for the PM bug.... I haven't noticed it as all the time I spend in IRC is for things just like this. Tiny chatroom related to a wiki/site. Maybe it was related to whatever server you were using since IRC seems to be a make your own flavor protocol?

I use Pidgin for everything normally but my school's network blocks pidgin (which makes very little sense as Live Messenger, Aim, etc. work fine on their own, even Miranda works but I didn't like it's interface). So I use mibbit at school or when pidgin randomly decides to hate IRC.

A wim I have is to break down, when I'm really bored and feeling motivated some day, and look at pidgin's code for IRC. It doesn't work randomly, blocks any commands pidgin doesn't know ie /ns, and in general seems like the protocol that got the least attention despite being the ancient open source protocol... <.<

Chatzilla looks nice, but this trend to make independent programs as firefox plugins bothered me even before Monzilla went insane and started releasing major versions every 3 weeks or less...

I don't use Mibbit because of that bug but it plagues people I hang around with (which is why I don't use it... recursive).
