It was bloody freaking COLD, and Aurora rarely said that. She had something of a natural cold-resistance -- Mons Omega and its lava crater had nearly destroyed her with heat -- but right now it felt as if her hands and feet were about to fall off. Maybe an ear, or both. Nose. She pulled her shirt up to her face.
She had bailed a while ago, because something was just horribly wrong. She sometimes got that feeling out of the blue, like the world was going to hell, but this time, it really felt that way. Call it intuition, paranoia, they were both really the same thing in different proportions, but she had struck out north with feeling.
She had even left Varomon behind with the group. Maybe they were following her, maybe not. Her mind just wasn't working right now, and it only had one goal, and she was going to follow it: walk in one direction until she started heading south again.
She wasn't shivering anymore. Bad sign, said a little voice somewhere in the back of her mind. That meant hypothermia was approaching. But so long as she kept walking, it would all be okay, whether or not her fingers were numb and her legs were wobbling and frost was settling over her eyelashes and lips.
It would all be okay.

They moved quickly.
The group split up to make sure they had everything from the little town, picking up any items they might have left back at the inn. Some of them went to the sanctuary node and tried to see if they could repair it, but most of guard Digimon were in an understandably foul mood and wouldn't allow them to get particularly close.
Chaos was one of the ones staying outside, although keeping distance from the group working at the node. She didn't really know if there was anything she could have done to help, but she felt awful having watched it happen without being able to do anything.
That seemed to have happened quite a lot.
Slowly, the group began to converge again in an open spot near the edge of the village, keeping their distance from the guardians working at the node. It only took about ten minutes total for everybody to congregate loosely once again, and Chaos took a silent headcount to confirm how many of them were left.
Too few, she decided.
"Okay," she said, trying to make some semblance of order. "We've gotta put some distance between ourselves and this village in case one of the remaining ones tries to kill us while we're here. We can't expect the Digimon here to fight our battle."
Which was said not necessarily out of altruism, but the fact that the strongest Digimon in the village seemed to be the Aquilamon that kept watch. It was almost exclusively Rookies. They couldn't possibly be forced to fight, and certainly not when it was the tamers' fault that their defenses had collapsed.
"So," Suriumon said, "our best plan is to head--"
"Wait."
He stopped. "What?"
Chaos did another count, then a mental assignment of names. It was completely necessary, though; she could already see the problem.
"Where's Aurora?"
The wolf scanned the group and frowned. "Not here," he said.
"How's that? She as with when we got here, she can't have gotten far..."
She turned her attention to Varomon, now back to his Rookie form, as many of the Digimon had, and tilted her head curiously.
"Where'd she get off to?"

"The North Star?" Said Nova, who was sitting a little ways off under a tree, listening quietly. He was alone at the moment. Enix had went off to go scout the area in case something really was coming after them and Frost had went inside to rest for a little while.
He thought about it for a moment, even if there was no North Star in the Digital World. It had some kind of symblance. People usually looked to the North Star for Guidance when traveling, or otherwise when they had lost their way. He was sure Aurora wasn't lost physically. But Varomon did say she had been acting weird lately. Maybe she was lost mentally, not crazy but, maybe the virus had messed with her and somehow had her heading north?
"Hey, you don't think she head north literally right? I mean of all time to find guidance of the self. It wasn't a really good time with evil double out trying to kill you?" He asked Chaos, but it was also mean't for Varomon as well. None of them needed to be alone right now, and with Aurora's double still alive, she really didn't need to have her guard down.

"The... north star?"
She looked up, as though expecting to see constellations. Not likely, of course; even at night, the Mirage sky was rife with unusual constellations, and she had never really recognized something solid like the north star. Then again, she hadn't honestly looked.
She pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose and bit her lip.
The virus, she thought immediately. And then after Nova spoke; Abikari.
Pandora had temporarily inhabited Chaos' body at one point, feeding her strange thoughts and manipulating her decisions so she would wind up where she needed to be. Edge, somewhat freakishly, was co-habiting Nova's body at the moment. It might not have been possession -- Abikari wasn't dead -- but there was a real possibility that the clones might has some connection with their originals.
And more than that, Abikari seemed to appear where Enjou was. Enjou was the one who had infected Aurora.
She closed her eyes, exhaled deeply.
Not good. Not good, not good, not good--
She knelt down, getting eye level with Varomon.
"I'm sorry," she said, "but we really need to find her. Do you know what 'north star' might mean, or-- or at least the direction she headed in? Anything you know, she-- she could be in serious danger."

Chaos narrowed her eyes and fought back to urge to smack him upside the muzzle.
"Don't insult me, dragon-boy," she said. "I've known her way longer than you have. I know better than that, and I know her better than that."
She shoved herself upright and turned away for a few seconds, taking a few steps, trying to separate herself and think. Cocytus, which was... the Freezeland. The Otherside shift.
But that didn't help a lot. They would have to try and follow her, if that was where she went, but it was a long, long way away, and that was a lot of area to cover in a search on the way there. Chaos at least knew that she hadn't disappeared that long ago, which hopefully meant that she hadn't gotten that far--
Chaos realized that she had lost sight of the real issue. They had to deal with evil clones. One of them could be waiting for its opportunity to strike from nearby. And she had decided that clearly, that was not the most important thing for the moment. Especially if she was being drawn away, off alone, a target without the benefit of safety in numbers...
Might be attacked. Although Chaos could remember orders not to harm Aurora, it seemed that the individual alter-tamers were going rogue. Who knew if they would obey those orders any longer?
They had already lost too many people.
Chaos had already lost too many people.
She turned to face Varomon once more.
"Do you know her I.P. address?" Chaos asked, digging into her pocket and taking out her digivice. "Or-- I dunno quite how it works when you're actually connected, but do you think you could contact her digivice through mine?"

He bared long rows of needle-teeth at her comment. "Yeah, well, you haven't been fighting stuff with her. She may be different now. And I know her, too."
With that, he rolled his eyes upward, tried to think, and finally recited off her IP address. "That...should be it. But if it isn't, I'm going north to find her." His wings shifted demonstratively, although in Rookie form they were mostly for gliding and short-range flight.
Aurora had gotten farther than was expected -- how she ended up all the way here was something of a mystery, but nonetheless, here she was, and it was freaking snowing, and finally she had to shelter herself under an overhang and shove her hands into her armpits.
"All right, brain, what the hell are we doing?" She sighed and watched it condense into the air. "I'm out here. Now tell me why. You don't usually try to get me --" She doubled over, pressing her head against her crossed arms, hissing in pain. Felt like something was jabbing her in the skull...

Simon was sitting on the ground with his eyes clothes, legs folded in front of him. He refused to say a word to anyone around him; he was, in truth, so torn up about what had happened--about his loss of control around the peculiar Pandora--that he didn't want to talk to the people upon whom he usually relied, much less the amalgamation of odd Tamers and Partners he'd met with over the past two days, many of whom were now deceased.
As he sat brooding under a facade of meditation, Leader, Agare, and Caster were standing by the others, trying not to look useless. They felt it, of course--Pandora had destroyed the Sanctuary Node without any apparent effort--but tried to tell themselves there was nothing they could have done. Within the Sanctuary Field, only violence would have served to stop Pandora, and violence couldn't be done under its protective influence.
"Not that we don't care about the Infected girl whose whereabouts may lead to her being an viral puppet," Caster put in. "But every moment we waste here is a moment when whatever ridiculous forces are presently assembled against us could be tracking us down. I'm still not sure how we survived Odin; I don't want to see the next bag of horrors we bring to bear."
"I'm looking forwards to it," Leader put in. "But then, I've been told I'm not the sanest of individuals."
"Nor do I relish heading into a freezing hell, particularly a freezing hell in the dark armpit of the multiverse," Agare added. "But if we know she's heading to that freezing hell, getting a tracking system active might be done on the way, yes?"
"Suffice to say that this conversation might be a lot less dangerous if we were on the move?" Caster relished a good fight, but he was still tired and he did not relish the prospect of being hurt further. He had rebuilt part of a mountain and fought a water serpent; he had slammed earth into an all-consuming monster against whom he'd fought only a little earlier.
He needed a place to recover; failing that, he needed a place where he wasn't, for even a short time, in active danger.

Suriumon, sitting curled up a short distance away, raised his head from his paws and looked at Caster.
"In case you didn't notice," he growled, "they know exactly where we are already, what with Pandora having been here not fifteen minutes ago. If anybody is close by, they'll be tracking us very easily. Although I do agree," and he looked over to Chaos, who was quickly tacking information into your digivice, "that we need to move."
"In case you forgot," Chaos said, "some of us can teleport with our digivices. If we can get a lock on her signal while we're here, we-- we might be able to jump to her. If she's gotten far enough away, we could possibly shake pursuers at the same time."
The wolf shook his head and lowered it back on his paws. As soon as he did, Chaos gave a little "Hah!" of triumph and archived the number immediately. The device gave a name with the number, just what she needed for confirmation, and also gave indication that it was active. Which meant that there was no Otherside shenanigans. Not yet.
Thank god.
She nodded to Varomon. "I've got her," she said. "Thank you."
She sent out the call.

Aurora would normally have jumped out of her skin at the sound of the Digivice, but right now, she just didn't have the energy. Though she was more athletic than she'd ever been in her life, genetics were genetics, and her metabolism was more of single-process kind that couldn't chew gum and walk at the same time. Right now, it was all dedicated to conserving and generating heat, rather than doing things like reflexes.
But the numbness in her hands had gone away -- if anything, the cold just didn't feel there anymore, even though surely it was -- and so she dislodged one fist and fumbled the Digivice to her face.
Yeah, sure, time to get up and get moving, the world was telling her. There were caves here. They'd be warmer, and closer to whatever the hell she was trying to do.
At that thought, an alien warmth burrowed into her chest and settled there like a cat on a pillow, or maybe a tendril of flame that curled about, wound between--
Answer the phone, darnit.
"H'lo?" She held the thing in front of her and muttered into it, mouth nearly touching the microphone.
