Requiem: Memento Mori, by GravityI have been playing a relatively new MMORPG (I think it's only been around maybe four or five years now) called "Requiem: Memento Mori." I find it to be rather fun, especially considering that its setting, storyline and mechanics are different than most free online games.
For starters, it is a dark fantasy game, set in a post-apocalyptic world that has been ravaged by both magic and science. In my opinion, the landscape is very pretty, though it may be considered strange to think of a ruined world as being very pretty. The monsters are not the typical fantasy game creatures: everything has a horror-esque spin to it- such as zebras having horns and lizard-like faces and giant spiders having somewhat humanoid faces with huge mouths. Battles are very gory, while you're fighting a creature, there is a lot of bloodshed- every time you damage an enemy (or your character gets hurt) it (or you) become bloodied. Death scenes involve watching bits of the creature tumble to the ground or fly through the air in a shower of blood. All of the enemies make noise when you are fighting them.
There is a lot of customization in regard to characters. There are not many classes or races to choose from (yet) but that shouldn't be a turn-off. For weapons and armor can be improved via "Xenons," which are improvement items and must be taken to the "enchanting" blacksmith in any town to upgrade it. There is also a DNA system, which as you level up, is used to improve your character as well, depending on what DNA you decide to "power up."
There are a lot of quests that can be undertaken- and they are not always the typical "kill x amount of creatures" quests. Some of them do require a certain amount of creatures to be killed, others require the player to talk to some NPCs, some need items to be retrieved or locations to be explored. These "storyline" quests offer experience, monetary and item rewards. "Scroll Quests" are not storyline-driven quests. They are purchased from an "Agent" in town and do require monster eradication, offering a monetary reward upon completion. These are essentially "mercenary" quests.
Oh~! And your character? Regardless of your race or class, your character is classified as a Temperion, which is a kind of cyborg. though they do not really look like cyborgs. It is an interesting thing to note though- especially since there are NPCs that will discuss Temperions. It adds a measure of flavor to the game.
There are a few methods of travel: the game gives you a free seven-day mount when you first join, which is a nice addition. The towns and watchtowers also have transportation services - "Winggliders," which look like rather dangerous, one-person planes that actually do fly you from one location on the map to another, for a small fee. Walking is always another option for transportation.
There is also a "possession beast" system: at level twenty-three, you can undertake a quest that will grant you a "possession beast" form that you can transform into. This form has its own sets of weapons and armor to acquire, as well as its own special skillset. Each race has its own unique possession beast form, which I like.
Lant, which is the in-game money, is quite easy to obtain in the beginning stages. I am only level twenty right now and I have 11K Lant (I had 15K, but I found some things to buy and upgraded my gear.)- all obtained by selling items that monsters drop (these items, I have sold to NPCs.) I have not looked at the auction house yet, but I am going to do so very soon.
There are holiday events in-game. Right now, there is a Valentine's Day event that requires people to gather roses from monsters. The roses can be exchanged to the "Flower Girl" NPC in each town to get a special gift box that can contain a wide variety of items. This event is repeatable until the 21st of the month.
The game was created by Gravity, which are the same people who made Ragnarok Online, which should tell you that the game is not bundled with any nasty little surprises.
There are "Raids" which are the same thing as instances, for those who may be curious about such things.
I do not like PK whatsoever- so if anyone is interested in joining, you can find me on the Valdes server. My character's name is Elaisse.
I am posting this here because I would like to get more people to join- and because if I can get at least a few people to play with me, I am more than willing to make a casual/RP guild for us, if anyone would be interested in such a thing. ^.^
I am not posting screenshots, because most of them are rather dark (not in a bad way, but more like in a horror movine way.)
