Welcome to Sapphos Weyr! This is your lovely news scroller, so if you aren't familiar with it, press start and stop to make it move and stop. It's pretty nifty, eh?

Turnover brought a swift and decisive end to the War of the Weyrs. In a peace summit held at Sapphos, it was agreed not only that Pern required as many dragons and their riders as possible, but that it was detrimental to the future of the world to continue the destructive raids.

High Reaches Weyr is now populated by a bizarre mix of Sapphos, Igen, and Ista riders. Several members of the Tiger Clan, including the ‘other’ matriarch, have fled to the cold North. T’sai perished in Threadfall.

While the weyrleaders argued in a peace summit, a harem was gathered from those at the festivities. Among them were Pern’s youngest rider, one of the calcium riders and his cobalt, and the lover of Yeskith’s steward. Staren mounted a search, and successfully retrieved the captives.

The weyr holds its collective breath as the wait continues for one of the queens to take Flight. Will it be Takhisith? Jennath? Balath?

Rupture has returned! This devastating illness has not been seen in several Turns, but the virus that causes it has mutated. Those who were vaccinated against the old Rupture may still fall to this new version.

Got some juicy IC gossip? PM Faerie and it'll appear in the news scroller.

IMPRESSIONABLE CREATURES

H E V R E N

P H Y S I O L O G Y
Clutching - Depending on the mate, a female hevren can clutch anywhere from three to twelve eggs. They can also be completely sterile.

Coloration – The hybrid offspring of a wher and a wyvern, hevren tend to be a bizarre mixture of their parents. Typically sired by a Greater Seraphim wyvern, they share that bright coloration. However, whers were created from the same genetic material as dragons. Because whers are more resistant to mutation than dragons, the feline mutations have not appeared in whers. With the introduction of wyvern genes, though, the same genetic code that allowed for feline dragons can be activated. Most hevren have a feline pattern in wyvern colors. They are ranked by pattern rather than color.

Eyes – Wyvern eyes are not multi-faceted like most other dragonkin, but hevren eyes are mostly pupil. They thrive as nocturnal creatures, but can function normal during the day. Once a time period has been chosen, though, whether diurnal or nocturnal, a hevren will stay in that schedule.

Hide – Similar to a bovine in terms of hide, hevren hide can be washed twice a sevenday for best results, though oiling can also benefit them. It is a matter of preference.

Mating – Hevren have a range of potential mates, though they will most often mate with other hevren, or smaller whers. They can mate with Greater Seraphim wyverns, Red Spiral wyverns, and Western Desert wyverns, but each hevren will develop their own taste in who they prefer to mate.

Parentage – Most commonly the result of a gold wher and a Greater Seraphim wyvern, hevren are much smaller than their parents. They can be clutched by a fertile green wher and a Red Spiral wyvern, but this is rarer, and results in even smaller specimens.

    Rank

Tiger - Highest Ranked Hevren, they are strong willed and very much like their dragon counterpart. The Rarest among them.
Rock - The next highest ranked they are justl ike their dragon counterparts. They are the next rarest
Splotched - Fairly Uncommon, not exactly the most common but still very much like most of their species.
Spotted - The most common Hevren, they are long legged like their dragon counterpart.

Sex is not set to a fixed ratio. They are equally likely to be either male or female.

    Sizes

Regardless of rank, hevren can range from four feet in height, eleven feet long, and thirteen-foot wingspan, down to two feet in height, six feet long, and eight-foot wingspan. The larger ones are spawned by either Greater Seraphim or Western Desert wyvern, and clutched by a gold wher. Small ones are typically the result of a Red Spiral and a fertile green wher.

Wings – As they are typically sired by scissor-wing wyverns, most hevren have four wings at the shoulder blade. Those sired by Western Desert wyverns may also have the four-wing configuration, but they more commonly have two wings at the shoulders, and very thick hindlegs.

Wyverns

Please note that this post discusses only Pet Varieties of wyvern. If you are seeking information on riding varieties, please consult the Riding Wyvern Thread.

Jade Wing Wyvern
PHYSIOLOGY
These small wyverns are often refered to as Snake Flits, for their strange resemblance to a tunnelsnake/firelizard crossbreed. Like all "Glider" Wyverns, Jade Wings have long, serpentine bodies and a single set of broad wings. Like most wyverns, Jade Wings lack forearms. They are rather regularly colored, with dark bodies in any color, with fantastically vivid neon green wingsails, which often have markings in other colors as well. They range from 12 inches to 36 inches in length, or from one to three feet, with a height approximately 1/3 their length. Another notable characteristic are the series of three "whiskers" on each cheek of Jade Wing wyverns, which are in fact protective barns that can puncture flesh. In most situations, the barbs lie flat against the wyvern's head, but under stress they will flare out, much like a lizard's frill, becoming a shield of sorts to protect their heads. These barbs are not poisonous, but are hooked and hard to remove. If broken, cheek barbs will regrow, slowly, over the course of several months.

Like all pet varieties of wyvern, females have a straight barb on their tail, at a roughly ninety degree angle, which is hollow, sharp, and if untreated is lethally poisonous to any animal that has blood rather than ichor. Ichorous animals will instead suffer a severe and debilitating burning sensation in the area of the sting for a few hours to a day, often accompanied by boils. Males have a hooked barb which is not as useful defensively, but does allow them to safely mate with females by holding their poisoned barbs at bay. This barb is often, though not always, colored in a fashion reminiscent of their wing markings.
SOCIOLOGY
Snake Flits mate by battle rather than by racing. A female that is in estrus will call all worthy male challengers to fight each other, either to death or until she has selected her suitor. Then, that suitor will will be expected to best the female in aerial combat. Upon succeeding in overpowering her, the male will be allowed to mate with his female.

Jade Wing wyverns are not known for their fair making tendencies. However, young wyverns are easily integrated into existing fairs of firelizards or wyverns.
COMMUNICATION
Snake Flits have the weakest bond of all wyvern varieties, with the strongest being as communicative as a green firelizard. They are never capable of learning speech, rarely obey commands, and even the images they share with their bonds are very fuzzy and confusing. However, they are capable of a variety noises, and usually make their point known. Snake flits that are raised in close quarters with whers may learn to speak in wher sounds as well.

Lesser Seraphim Wyvern
PHYSIOLOGY
Ranging in size from three to six feet in length with a height of roughly 1/10 their length, and a wingspan equal to their length, Lesser Seraphim are highly sought after as pets for their often astonishing arrays of markings and coloration, as well as their unique arrangement of wings. Each Lesser Seraphim has six wings, a front oriented pair that is often somewhat longer, and four rear wings that, while smaller than the main wings, are usually oriented closely together, either side-by-side or even one-above-the-other, and are more than capable of carrying the wyvern's entire weight if the main wings are injured. In addition, they have no legs, which contributes to their flexibility, and they are often seen as living scarves by the wealthy and fashionable.

As a rule, duller colored seraphim are female, and brighter ones are male. However, this is a very general rule that is often disproven.

Like all pet varieties of wyvern, females have a straight barb on their tail, at a roughly ninety degree angle, which is hollow, sharp, and lethally poisonous to any animal that has blood rather than ichor. Ichorous animals will instead suffer a severe and debilitating burning sensation in the area of the sting for a few hours to a day. Males have a hooked barb which is not asuseful defensively, but does allow them to safely mate with females by holding their poisoned barbs at bay. These barbs are usually in duller, unsaturated shades that stand out against the fantastic colors of the Seraphim's hide.
SOCIOLOGY
Lesser Seraphim have complex mating rituals. In ther maiden flight, a lesser seraphim may choose to race suitors, or fight them. Whoever wins that maiden flight will be the females chosen mate from then on. However, should a challenging male wish to claim her when she rises, he may attack the current mate and fight either to death, or until the female chooses the challenger. A choice for the original mate will usually not serve to stop the battle. Upon a challenger being accepted, he will still have to prove himself to the female, either by besting her in combat, or catching her in a racing flight.

Lesser Seraphim are fairly social, and enjoy being part of a large fair. Many females will be protective of their eggs, in an attempt to hoarde their young and increase their fair size.
COMMUNICATION
Lesser Seraphim can have the "Talking Flit" modifier applied to them. Communicative ability seems to roughly parallel size, with larger seraphim being able to form clearer images and stronger bonds. However, all seraphim have bond strength in the firelizard range, with females tending towards stronger bonds than males as well.

Fire Wyvern
PHYSIOLOGY
Presumed to be the result of crossbreeding between ancestral wyverns and ancestral dragonets, Fire Wyverns look nearly identical to modern firelizards, though a trained eye can spot the fine boned, flexible build of a wyvern. They are the only pet veriety of wyvern capable of chewing firestone and flaming, hence the name "Fire Wyvern." They have four legs and two wings, but their limbs are often very closely set, giving them oddly long necks and tails. In addition, their lack of any predicatable colorings and patterns often gives them away as wyverns. However, some of them, if they are fortunately colored, may be mistaken for firelizards.

Aside from their ability to flame, fire wyverns are unique among pet wyverns for their lack of tail barbs, meaning that they rarely win mating battles. However, their long wingspans do make them considerable competitors in mating races.

They range in size from 24 to 60 inches in length, or two to five feet, with a shoulder height of approximately 2/3 their overall length.
SOCIOLOGY
Fire Wyvern females usually mate in a style very similar to firelizards. However, their flights may be somewhat more violent than the average firelizard, and they will gladly welcome any wyvern or firelizard competitors. Likewise, male fire wyverns can be seen participating in any pet wyvern mating competitions, as well as in firelizard flights.

They are quite social animals, and while some individuals may show aggressive or isolationsist tendencies, over all, their dragonet haritage come through clearly and they enjoy the company of a large fair.
COMMUNICATION
The Talking Flit modifier may be applied to these wyverns. Their bond strength varies, usually by relative age. If a fire wyvern bonds to a master right out of its shell, it will usually have a much stronger bond than one which chooses a bondmate months or Turns later. They are capable of a large array of vocal communications as well, though the most effective manner of communicating with a fire wyvern remains either emotional transfer or the use of a dragonkin translator.

Red Spiral Wyvern
PHYSIOLOGY
Named for two traits, the Red Spirals have hides which are based in the red spectrum, with markings in any color. In addition, their mating barb is fluted and spiralled, much like a mythical unicorn's horn. The Red Spiral is a close relative of the Seraphim breeds of wyvern, possibly the result of a cross breed between a lesser seraphim and a western desert wyvern. They have six wings in the same arrangement as a lesser seraphim: a main pair that is larger and stronger, and an auxiliary set of four set further back which are able to carry the wyverns entire weight if needed.

The Red Spiral also has two "rear" legs which enable quick and talented launches, and with some practice, a Red Spiral can learn to walk with relative skill and grace. Red Spirals are also the largest pet breed of Wyvern, with a length ranging between six and twelve feet, and hip heights approximately 2/3 of their length. However, because of their slender builds, they are, as a rule, unable to carry any passenger above eighty pounds: namely, children. Some wyverns may be weaker or stronger, but the maximum weight ever recorded is one hundred and ten pounds.
SOCIOLOGY
Red Spirals mate mainly through racing, though some may choose battle. Similarly to most Dragonkin, Red Spirals choose a new mate for each estrus cycle. However, they may show preference for past mates, and it is not unheard of for a Red Spiral to consistently mate with a chosen partner.

Red Spirals are very social wyverns, travelling in fairs of more than twenty individuals in the wild, and handle sharing their Bonded with anything from firelizards to dragons happily and easily.
COMMUNICATION
Red Spirals can have the "Talking Flit" modifier applied to them. Red Spirals have the strongest bond strength of pet wyvern varieties. Their bond can range as high as an extremely weak wher (eg, a wher which takes its own name, rather than its handler's). Their images are usually very firm and very clear, and they can be trusted to not only carry messages on paper, but to carry "recordings" of their Bonded speaking and play back that image for a recipient. They do not speak naturally, however, and have a memoryspan of only a day or two.

Ikuzu

PHYSIOLOGY
Eyes - Ikuzu have anywhere from two to six eyes, their eye sight isn't the greatest but they can see everywhere. These creatures are very much a prey creature, their eye sight is designed for a creature settled to twilight time.

Body - The creatures also produce an ooze all their lives that is an excellent fertilizer, food for some and a decent facial mask. They have three sets of arms, one of which is used for grasphing the other two are used primarily for walking. These creatures also possess spines along their backs. These creatures are incapable of going between.

Size - Ikuzu are born at barely a half inch long and grow rapidly for the first turn of life. They grow to a rather good size of eighteen inches tall and four feet long.

Coloration - These creatures have a variety of colors, color means nothing to these creatures. They are usually brighter colors but duller ones are not unheard of.
SOCIOLOGY
Ikuzu are very similiar to rat's on earth, but they are also seperate in that they are very social. They live in large family group that are very fluid they can range anywhere from a few dozen to anywhere near three to four hundred because Pern has such wide open areas. They hunt in groups and tend to stay social and close together. These creatures are very intelligent in that they learn quickly from their enviroment, when kept as pets they tend to like having their human around as well as any other pets.

Ikuzu show many social behaviors when kept together, they will groom each other and help take care of one another. Typically they also help to defend the young of the colony, because they are loving and social creatures. They are very much creatures that like to please humans, they tend to be very happy around people.

Though they are social they do have a set social structure and they tend to keep it tight. They have a dominant pair similiar to a dominant breeding pair in meerkats. This dominant pair only remains dominant as long as they are strong enough to defend the position. This position changes frequently among wild groups, tame groups it changes less often.
COMMUNICATION
A lot of the communication with Ikuzu is body language, their bodies are very expressive. The spines along their back go up or down based on their excitement. They do make some vocal noises but those are rare. Typically they just click or grind their teeth based on their emotions and how they feel, it's easy to understand if one tries.

NOTE: Majority of the social behaviors were re done by me. Because they are based on rats and rats are quite intelligent. I just can't see Iku being as dumb as Lucius made Ikuzu seem like.

Shaltiri Riding Wherries

Flying Variant
PHYSIOLOGY
Eyes - Flying Variants of Shaltiri Wherries have eyes with two eyelids, one they use when flying because of dust and dirt. It protects their actual eye and the second set is their actual eyelid, it is usually closed when they sleep. Their eyes are usually a pale color, yellows, blues and rarely reds.
Musculature - This creature is built similiarly to Runnerbeasts, though it rarely shows really through their feathers. They are a heavily feathered creatures, their bodies are covered a coat of feathers and it is the easiest thing that seperates them from others. Though their wings are the part that is true feathers, the rest is pseudo feathers.

Their bones are hollow and that is what allows them to fly, though it helps that their bodies so light. They need it in order to fly but their bones are very similiar to a dragons in design and it shows in how they walk.
Size - These creatures are not very large but they are about the size of your average Runnerbeast. Standing at about four feet at their shoulder and about four to five feet long, they're small creatures when compared to dragons or whers.
SOCIOLOGY
Shaltiri Wherries are an interesting creature, they normally live in groups. No one really calls these grous anythig special, few Shaltiri are ever encountered in the wild. Ordinarily these creatures are only ever encountered tame and domestic as they were bred. But a few have gone wild so they form large groups and tend to stay deep in the jungle. They shy away from people if they're wild, they also sometimes if they have a nest they will attack humans for coming near it.
They are fierce defenders of their nests, typical Wherries mate for life. Though there are exceptions to this rule, usually when they are sold they will pick a new mate if one is available when they come into season. Usually there is a display of some kind before mating will or can occur this behavior is similiar to many of earth's birds.
COMMUNICATION
These birds are not stupid but they're not as intelligent as say a dragon, wher or Wyvern. But they understand basic command, they can not speak. They click, chirp and make a variety of sounds a few can even learn to mimic words that are repeated around them often enough.
Running Variant
PHYSIOLOGY
Eyes - This variant of Shaltiri does not have two sets of eye lids, they don't really need it. They don't fly so they can't get much dust in them, they have instead very thin light feathers that go over their eyes.
Musculature - These Wherries are built along the lines of any creature designed to run for long periods of time. They have short thin wings that are not built for flight instead they are used to help when they turn to quickly. Their build is also very much for their life style they are a more predatory avian than the Flying variant.
Size - Because of the different build of these wherries they are taller than Flying Variants, standing at about five to six feet tall. These Wherries are a bit shorter length wise, but they are very much a Running creature.
