Because they have leadership qualities, they direct the activities of the marginal and hardcore members and oversee the recruitment of new members. They are the most streetwise and the most knowledgeable in legal matters. These members are at the top of the gang hierarchy. It is their role to make sure that the gangs extensive written "constitution" is upheld by its members. The leader(s) of a gang determines at what level of criminal activity the gang will function. Original - Other Names - Original Gangster or O.G. Description - The Originals are in the gang for life. They're often original members of the gang from when it was first started and will, most likely, always be a part of it. However, Harcore members will sometimes rise to this position after showing their absoloute devotion to the gang and spending many years within the gang. Once a member has risen to this spot, leaving the gang is forbidden. Trying so will likely get them killed. Hardcore - Other Names - None Description - The hardcore gang members are usually the older gang members, the individuals who are culturally and criminally enmeshed in the gang and are at risk of being so for life. Hardcore gang members care very little for anything outside of the gang. They tend to fail in all other structures: family, school and community. Hardcores often find themselves in trouble with the police for a variety of reasons. Associate - Other Names - Member, Regular Member Description - The associate gang member hangs out and gets involved with the gang culture and is dedicated to achieving the level of recognition needed to attain hardcore status. Their jobs are robbing and stealing. They are money oriented. They are initiated into the gang and will back up the "hardcore" gang members. If they stay in the gang long enough, they will become hardcore. They usually join the gang for status and recognition. They will wear gang colors, attend gang functions, and may even participate in some gang related criminal activity all to fulfill their emotional need of belonging. Wannabes - Other Names - Marginal Member Description - Their jobs are tagging and stealing. They are not yet initiated into the gang, but hang around with them and usually will do most anything the gang members ask of them so that they may prove themselves worthy of belonging. their jobs are tagging and stealing. Fringe - Other Names - None Description - The fringe gang member is still able to function outside of the gang structure and has not made a commitment to a life in the criminal gang culture.
