Timeline

1920 Prohibition - The Mafia's activities had been limited until the prohibition, when they exploded.
1929-1931 Castellammarese War - A bloody power struggle between two factions for control of the American Mafia. When the war ended, Salvatore Maranzano became the Boss of all Bosses for the entire Mafia.
September 10, 1931 Salvatore Maranzano Dies - He was the first and only Boss of Bosses of the American Mafia.
1931 Formation of The Commission - After Salvatore Maranzano's death, The Commission was formed. The purpose was to replace the old regime. The former system resulted in the most powerful boss imposing his will by brute force and ruling over all the other Bosses. It is composed of the five families Bosses and is sort of a Mafia board of directors. They mediate conflicts between families or internal conflicts.
1963 Secrets Exposed - Josheph Valachi, a Mafia member recruited by the FBI, exposed the name, structure, power bases, codes, swearing in ceremony, and members of the Mafia.

The Bonanno Family

Activities -
    gambling
    loansharking
    racketeering
    drug trafficking
    money laundering
    narcotics trade
History - The Bonnano War, also called the Banana Split, was a civil war within the family while Joseph "Joe Banana" Bonanno was Boss. People began complaining that he was never around, and so the Commission decided that he no longer deserved to be Boss. Therefore, Gaspar DiGregorio was appointed. However, Bonanno did not just accept this and move on. The skirmishes that then took place between DiGregorio supporters and Bonanno loyalists became known as the Bonanno war. With each side continuously spurning the other's peace offerings, the Commission eventually appointed a new boss, Paul Sciacca, in hopes that the fighting would stop. However, it carried on regardless, with both sides losing a lot of men, until Joseph Bonanno suffered a heart attack and announced his permanent retirement. In the years that followed, an FBI agent named Joe Pistone, posing as a Donnie Brasco, infiltrated himself into the Bonanno family and had several men put into prison.

The Columbo Family

Activities -
    labor rackets
    extortion
    gambling
    hijacking
    loan sharking
History - The Columbo family was formerly known as the Profaci family. Joe Profaci became the first boss of the family in 1931. He was hated by his underlings for his tight-fistedness and heavy taxation of family members. Profaci's leadership wasn't challenged until the late 1950s, mainly because of his ties to Joe Bonanno, the boss of the Bonanno family. Eventually, Carl Gambino began trying to undermine the alliance between the Bonanno and Profaci family. Three of Profaci's underlings, the Gallo brothers, were finally fed up with Profaci when he ordered one of their crew members executed. In February 1961, the Gallo brothers kidnapped several prominent members of the Profaci family; including the underboss, Joseph Magliocco, and captain, Joe Columbo. Profaci seemed to be cooperating with the Gallo brothers, until another of their crew was murdered and an attempt was made on one of the brothers. An all out war erupted between the two factions. Joe Profaci died from cancer on June 6, 1962 and Magliocco became the new head of family. Magliocco was forced to retire as head of family later on because he conspired with Joe Bonanno to kill the other bosses. Joe Columbo was appointed head of the family and the family was rechristened the Columbo family, to signify a new era. Columbo was later shot and left in a vegetative state. Eventually, Carmine Persico became boss of the family.

The Gambino Family

Activities -
    labor racketeering
    gambling
    loansharking
    extortion
    murder for hire
    solid and toxic waste dumping
    construction
    building and cement violations
    fraud and wire fraud
    hijacking
    theft
    fencing
History - Vincenzo "Vincent" Mangano was the first recognized leader of the Gambino family. Albert Anastasia became head of the Gambino family following Vincent's mysterious disappearance. At this point, the fortunes of the Gambino family were closely linked to that of the Genovese family. Anastasia was murdered on October 25, 1957. Carlo Gambino then took reigns over the family. Gambino soon became the most powerful leader of the Five Families. On October 15, 1976, Carlo Gambino died of a heart attack. Gambino's brother-in-law, Paul Castellano, took over as boss.
