» reach out ` Fear. Oppression. Discontent. These feelings had become an undercurrent in the air, a constant sense of dark and gloom hanging over the country. America was in the middle of a Great Depression. Money was scarce, family members fought, and neighbors ignored each other. In this atmosphere of tension, societal norms became obsolete. Food and water were luxuries few could get easily, and what little money there was became worthless. The government was frantic, desperately trying to create order in the rampant confusion, but failing so they fell apart. Out of all this chaos emerged a strong group: the Salvators. With their charm, persuasion, and promises, the American people thought they had found their saviors. They demanded a resignation of the current President, but he refused. As a result of this refusal, senators, representatives, and presidential advisers disappeared every day. At first, the President stood by and watched, thinking that whoever was behind this didn't have the guts to finish off everyone in the whole government. The mysterious disappearances continued, and finally the President stood down and resigned.
Although there was no actual evidence of the Salvators being the ones behind the disappearances and later, the President's sudden resignation, a lot of people suspected it. Society then divided into two sections: followers and supporters of the Salvators, and people who opposed their jurisdiction. At first, the Salvators' newly established rule was not that strict. Over time, however, as more and more people started to protest the Salvators' unorthodox methods and total control, strict decrees started to appear every day. Anyone who spoke out about the Salvators were arrested, thrown in jail, and sometimes even executed. Phone conversations, email, and instant messages were traced. The internet was monitored harshly. Food was rationed. Curfews were enforced. The list of restrictions was endless.
Anyone who wished to become a part of the Salvators' dictatorship received special benefits and power in the new regime. When the establishment of the new government had still been fresh, there was a wave of people--some experienced and knowledgeable, some young and passionate--who joined the Salvators. They outnumbered everyone else, and yet small rebellions popped up all over the country. They were quickly put down, but the rebels continued to quietly oppose the government, never giving up.
In a world where everything is traced and every word is used against you, it seems impossible to have a normal life. The people opposed to the Salvators say this is war. The Salvators protest that they are only trying to help America's floundering economy. There is no truth here, only opinions and feelings. Join the small town inhabitants, city dwellers and government members as they reach out for something to hold onto.
