Personality: There is a certain two sidedness to Sofie Winchester that many would argue doesn’t exist. What they see on the outside is a bubbly, vivacious woman with a zest for life in all its forms. Inwardly however, Sofie has been reduced to a terrified, unconfident mess, the result of her most recent breakup…which was six years ago. She agonizes over new friendships and sees betrayal around every corner, this causes her great stress as she is naturally a very caring, affectionate person and yes, has been known to trust a bit faster than she should. She tries, every day to remember that what happened, happened for a reason and delivered her into a new life but she can’t help but feel and know in her heart that she’s on the road to becoming a cynical pessimist.

From a young age, Sofie’s parents were always fighting. However, they both owned half of their very profitable horse breeding and training facility and so refused to divorce. Sofie had a difficult time ignoring her parents and, for a while, developed a very bleak outlook on what the words “love” and “marriage” would hold for her in the future. She feared that she wouldn’t be able to keep up a decent relationship and would dominate the entire affair until her boyfriend left her. However, she couldn’t help being a hopeless romantic, born of thousands of hours spent with her nose buried in fairytales and romance novels. She believed that some day, if she really loved someone she could make it work, all it took was hard work and some sacrifice on her part. Though she is still incredibly bitter about her ex-boyfriend she feels that all she needs is that one person to make it all better, that one prince among all the frogs that will sweep her off her feet.

Since her parents were very selfish and ignored their young daughter unless they wanted something from her, she grew to be very independent and self-reliant. However she was also very curious and often got into a lot of trouble for exploring places she shouldn’t be in or creating messes when she was bored. For the most part Sofie is very open about her feelings and loves to talk to people about life and all sorts of different subjects. Surprisingly she is a very loving and loyal person, her parents attitudes and constant bickering never having a dent in the sunny attitude she wanted to show everyone. She was determined to be happy despite them.

Sofie is a very affectionate person and is very good with children and animals. Many magical creatures openly accept her physical presence when they won’t allow anyone else’s; the most surprising creatures of course, are dragons. While most absolutely refuse to be touched, Sofie cannot only approach them but pet them as well. She’s a very giving and generous person, both with her time and money. She hates being a burden and tries to help out all she can and offers her services in exchange for something if money is tight. Not that she can do much, Sofie is pretty hopeless when it comes to domestic things, thank Merlin for House Elves or her cat would surely get lost among the junk in her room. No one ever accused Sofie of being the most organized person in the world and mostly it comes across as absent minded though she is quite sharp. Her flaw is that she’s so used to doing things for herself that she often forgets that she can use magic. Most of the time it’s used as a last resort anyway. She really does enjoy working with her hands.

Sofie loves to take chances and is a huge daredevil. She's inquisitive, talkative and loves attention, but will often hold back said attention wanting in order for her friends to get enough attention as well. She loves sharing the spotlight but will of course perform if necessary, like most people she does occasionally enjoy being the center of attention and hams it up. Most of the time though she is humble in accepting any praise and defers most of it to those around her who have helped, after all: “You can’t do everything on your own!” Sofie is a surprisingly strong and noble person, while others would cave at certain things; she firmly stands her ground, demanding not only justice but moral uprightness. While she often comes across as very childlike and innocent, one thing can trigger a reaction so different than the first opinion that most witnesses never see her in the same light again.

For the last several years Sofie has suffered from a severe loss of confidence when it comes to her relationships and is trying to “find herself” as it were. Forgiveness, while it comes so easy to others does not come to her for her actions. She fears she will loose herself once more in any relationship she involves herself in. This doesn’t come up often as she is generally a care-free person but lately, her stress levels are starting to skyrocket (though admittedly she never shows it, she usually screams into her pillows).

Sofie isn't a strict teacher but she does expect respect in her classroom. She doesn't tolerate students being disrespectful of herself, other students or the subject she teaches. Most of the time she is very laid back and enjoys an atmosphere of fun in her classroom and encourages questions and open discussion. (When the subject at hand calls for discussion.)

History: When Wilber Winchester met Flora Hughes it was love at first sight. They met at a rodeo in San Antonio and thought they’d never see each other again. Imagine their surprise when just a week later he found her boarding the same flight back to California. The two hit it off on the plane ride out and even had dinner together when the plane landed. Their courting was quick and passionate, they loved each other and they loved horses, they had an idea to open the best training/breeding facility in California. After they were married…they did. But long nights, tight money and trying to build a reputation left both mates feeling bitter and unsatisfied, Flora’s wandering eyes didn’t help much either. Wilbur would always be left to wonder if Sofie was really his daughter or not.

The couple had a plan, neither of them really wanted to divorce the other, after all, less money that way. So they did the only thing they could think of doing, they decided to have a child. After nine months of Flora’s radical mood swings, crazy cravings and just general unhappiness, Wilbur was more than happy to welcome his baby girl into the world. But his suspicion that she wasn’t his daughter always seemed to inhibit the amount of love and attention he gave to her. It also didn’t help that when Flora got her figure back she started going out again.

So Wilbur and Flora, after ten years of marriage, decided that they despised each other, even after Sofie was born in an attempt to “save” their relationship. However, there was a problem, when they had been married neither considered a prenuptial agreement and both stood to loose what was most precious to them: their horse breeding and training facility. They had fulfilled their promise to make it profitable and the money was finally starting to come in. Their “marriage” quickly became a joke, when the couple wasn’t fighting in the living room over the company they were introducing six-year-old Sofie to their new boyfriends/girlfriends and telling her that she would have “two mommies or two daddies”. While most children in her situation found ways to ignore their parent’s angry words and the constant shuffle of their new partners, she couldn’t help but hear them and has been consequently scared for life because of it.

From a young age Sofie has been obsessed with a well known story called: “Alice in Wonderland”. She often dreamed that one day she would go down a rabbit hole and escape her dreadful life on the surface. Sofie eventually did find a way to ignore her parents by slipping farther and father away from her house as they were fighting, this led her to develop bizarre and interesting stories for her to later tell her friends who thought she had a knack for telling a story. She always thought that she’d grow up to be a writer or an actress so it did surprise her and her parents when she received her letter to attend the prestigious Langrove Academy of Magical Instruction and of course both parents objected STRONGLY. But Sofie had since stopped caring for what her parents said, realizing that both of them were extremely selfish creatures who thought everything of themselves or their well being in life. Of course, despite Sofie’s own personal feelings on the matter the wizard that was sent to explain the magical world to them had to include Sofie’s parents in the discussion. She learned that all the fantastic creatures she dreamed about and read about were real and that she could cast spells with a wand and that if she were really good enough she could pretty much do whatever she wished within that realm. Of course there were rules to be followed that Sofie had no problems adhering too, after all, she felt that like all great things comes great responsibility.

Sofie took matters into her own hands when her parents threatened not to support her and went to her maternal grandparents and asked for money to attend Langrove and allowed them to accompany her as she gathered her supplies and went to school. After that, every summer when Sofie left the school she stayed with her grandparents. Occasionally she would visit her parents at their insistence, but mostly it’s to say hello/goodbye and ride one of the horses before she goes back to her grandparents house on the beach. Sofie loves surfing and is pretty good at it. While she’s nowhere near professional level she can hold her own against the cocky beach teenagers that invaded the beach every summer. She hasn’t surfed in the last few years of course, being in England but she wants to go back to her Grandparents house this summer and do some catching up, she always felt at peace on the water.

Sofie never dreamed that she would make so many friends at school and became quite popular for her fun loving personality and her ability to tell stories. She did as much as she could at school and was even the Captain of her House Quidditch team. Many thought she would grow up to be a writer, or play Quidditch professionally, and in fact she was scouted for several teams within the United States and even Canada. But Sofie surprised everyone by not only excelling at Care of Magical Creatures but by the time she was 17 she was being offered several jobs once she graduated. One she accepted whole-heartedly was to help breed dragons and couldn’t wait to start. The reason for Sofie’s passion? She loved animals and animals of a magical nature fascinated her the very first day she walked into her third year COMC class. Up until then her life had been about friends, reading and Quidditch, after that day it became all about the animals (and friends and Quidditch of course). After she graduated with honors however, Sofie realized that her dream job involved lots of paperwork and training courses, it wasn’t until she was nineteen that she was actually allowed to participate in her “dream job”.

Sofie has only had two boyfriends, one was Bradley Jones in fourth year and the next was Johnathan Kretz, a boy in her year and house. They continued to date after graduaton and even moved in together after Sofie turned eighteen. Johnathan was eventually signed to an American Quidditch team and the two saw little of each other while they were working their respective jobs. However, Sofie always made an effort to go and see him if she wasn’t working. Everyone thought they were a nice enough couple, Sofie’s friends worried that she was changing herself for John but Sofie always refused and brushed it aside as a “silly worry”. Their relationship, to Sofie, was a little trying at times but better than what her parents had and that made her happy. However John soon became embroiled in some rather unsavory business deals and Sofie fled the relationship the day before he was busted, thanks to a few “chance” occurrences. She was only twenty years old when she felt she was beginning to loose control of her life. She spent the rest of the summer at Langrove (where she had fled in response to the crisis) and thanks to her old Headmistress June Shino, Sofie was able to get a job in the Ministry of Magic’s Department for the Regulation and control of Magical Creatures.

After a year of training and proving her skills and experience to the English department, the twenty-two year old traveled the globe to give lectures about the magical animals she knew and loved. However Sofie took her love of reading deeper into the realm of magical creatures. She collects and reads books about them, goes to lectures, debates with other breeders and experts and of course is very hands on in the field. Her goal is to be the best and she is certainly trying her hardest to make that dream a reality. However lately Sofie has become disenchanted with the monotony of her job since she was put back behind a desk when her bosses figured out how much she actually knew. A conversation with a local friend suggested that she should apply to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and attempt teaching for a while, if anything it would get her out of her cubicle and into the fresh air she so obviously craved. She was more than happy to apply for the job but due to some technicalities with her current situation, had to post pone her start date until just recently.

Sofie is very attached to her cat Monticore. She had flown back to the states to visit her grandparents last year and they presented her with the Maine Coon. He’s only 3 years old but very large, a trade mark for his breed. Sofie treats him like her baby and can’t stand it when he’s out of her sight for more than a few minutes. He has a very distinct and odd personality. For one, he loves to talk and will chatter back at Sofie incessantly if he feels she’s ignoring him. He also loves to sleep on his back, it’s not unusual for Sofie to come into her room and see him sprawled out on her bed, fast asleep on his back with his large paws curled up on his chest. He’s very affectionate and loves sitting in Sofie’s lap, and at times will push aside her book as she’s reading in bed and nuzzle her chin. He also hates it when people get close to her, the last man Sofie tried to entertain in her flat got a stare down so unnerving he hasn’t called back.

Sample RP: It was lunch time and Sofie was ecstatic. Even though her first day of classes was going well she found she had a headache by mid morning and after some aspirin she just wanted to lay down and go to sleep. But of course she couldn't do that so she ate and then trundled over to the teachers lounge were she laid back on one of the couches and engrossed herself in her newest Pamona Green novel, after setting an alarm of course.

It was so touching the way this woman wrote and it really was a shame that situations that occured in novels never happened in real life. Sofie would give almost anything for her prince charming to swoop down on a hippogriff and carry her away to a castle on the Scottish moors. He could be the troubled kind of hero, desperately wanting the companionship that love offered but too stubborn to admit it. But they would forge a deep and lasting bond and...this is where Sofie's mind decided to give her a dose of reality.

First, there weren't any available princes. Two, Hippogriffs would absolutely not just randomly accept another passenger if they didn't know them and what if the hippogriff didn't like her? (fat chance since every animal she ever met adored her) but still, it could happen. Three, why would a prince of all people (provided that there was one available and the Hippogriff let her on) would he choose her? A mental image of herself from that morning flashed into her mind.

She was messy, dirty (already) and had thrown together an outfit that would have made any self respecting woman cry with shame. Her white oxford was open at the collar and one button down, her jeans were streaked with mud and grass, her tie (a paisley concoction) was knotted loosely around her neck and her bright pink robe was hanging open and to the side. Her hair was pulled into a simple ponytail and absolutely no makeup graced her face. That wasn't unusual Sofie only wore makeup for really special occasions. She was certainly not princess material, she'd be lucky if the local bartender at the pub looked twice in her direction.

Rolling her eyes she scratched her head and rubbed her eyes. She hated getting realistic with herself sometimes, especially when she wanted to daydream like that...oh well, she was almost thirty, it wouldn't help for her to continue dreaming about the way things would never be. Sighing she leaned back and put the book on her chest, her eyes far away and deep in thought.
