"You know what, never mind that -- here's what you're going to do. You are going to help me get out of detention. You are going to be my alibi ... though really, we ought to dress you up some. Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Personality: At first glance Gerry has a serious demeanor, a demeanor that is at odds with almost everything that comes out of his mouth. He's prone to giving other people a difficult time, which includes blunt statements that to outsiders seem cruel, but to friends are clearly meant in jest. He also enjoys making outlandish statements and unfounded complaints, simply because he finds other people's reactions amusing. He rarely admits when he is joking, however, leading people to either consider him a huge jerk or to never believe a word that comes out of his mouth.
He is quite judgmental, actually, and so at times his jokes can descend from careless into intentional cruelty. He's aware of other people's flaws, and has no qualms about pointing them out in public. Not everyone appreciates his particular brand of humor, even if they realize that he isn't always entirely serious. And even if he does hurt someone's feelings unintentionally, he is rarely inclined to apologize, as he considers apologies an admission that his humor failed.
He won't do anything he considers pointless, no matter how much arguing is employed to persuade him otherwise. If he sees no immediate benefit to himself (pure enjoyment is a benefit) then he will refuse to do it. And then on occasion he will refuse to do something simply to be difficult, and to prove that the person trying to change his behavior has no power over him.
He himself is more sensitive than one would expect from a person willing to dish out snark. He is capable of laughing at himself, as long as he considers the ribbing to be that between equals. If he feels it is instead a disrespectful challenge to his status he will become wounded, and sulk. This will be in the guise of play, but his sullenness is never the pretense he would like people to think.
He definitely believes that other people are out to hold him back, whether it is because he's a half-blood or because he is a Slytherin. If he senses the slightest prejudice on either front he will be quick to exploit it, claiming bias and attempting to achieve restitution for emotional damages. He's determined to make something out of himself to prove to everyone (including himself) that he is capable. His independent streak is sometimes at odds with his ambition, however, as he may stubbornly refuse to perform actions that would actually be beneficial to his goals of academic advancement.
He can be quite vain. He has rather a high opinion of himself, and expects other people to agree with him about this. He's also difficult to discourage, and while persistence is a helpful trait in many pursuits, in some it's more akin to foolish optimism. Once he has his mind set on something he refuses to fail (this does not take into account those things he doesn't care about, in which case failure doesn't bother him). When he has his mind set on something he will be very intently focused, to the exclusion of all other activities.
At times he is also superficial, judging people on entertainment value rather than on honesty and moral fiber. It may seem as though his life's mission is to annoy boring people into becoming interesting (or at least his idea of interesting)
He hates being bored more than anything, and will come up with all sorts of private games to amuse himself, from the harmless (eat a cockroach cluster every time a student passes a note) to the obnoxious (perform a bat-bogey hex on everyone to turn the corner left foot first).

History: Penelope Roberts grew up in Froghall, Staffordshire, an area known for copper mining, as that was where her mother was from. Her father, however, was from nearby Leek, and thus she often visited his family and their Thestral ranch. It was there that she fell in love with a Muggle boy, one Bennett Malloy. Every summer and Christmas vacation, when she returned home from Hogwarts, she took the train from Froghall to Leek to visit him. Shortly upon graduation he proposed, and she accepted willingly. She settled down to raise her three children, and began writing recipes -- both potions and sustenance -- and was soon well respected in the academy as well as the kitchen.
Bennett Malloy lived all his life in Leek, and though both of his parents taught at Leek High Specialist Technology School, they raised sheep on the side. A new breed had recently been introduced from Charollais, France, and it was taking off in the shepherding industry, at least amongst those who raised rams to be bred with pureblood ewes to prevent inbreeding. Bennett jumped at the opportunity to buy several, and turned his thoughts to raising both sheep and family. Sheep were, after Penelope, his first love, and he wanted no career that would of necessity come before his shepherding duties.
Gerard Wayland Malloy was born on December 19th, 1983 at the North Staffordshire Hospital in Stoke-On-Trent, 10 miles from the little cottage that Penelope and Bennett Malloy called home. Three year old Lydia considered her new brother something of an early Christmas present, and she amused herself by trying to get him to play with her.
Gerry is smack in the middle of three children, all three of whom were expected to help out with the sheep when they weren't at school, a fact that Gerry resented greatly. He hated the sheep, stubborn and immutable as himself at times, and he feared the panthers. The muggle government insisted there were no panthers in the moorlands, but more than one farmer reported sightings of the large cats, and there were nights he heard growls and saw yellow eyes and large paw prints. His mother seemed to adamantly believe that panthers prowled the moorlands, and Gerry believed that his mother knew everything, so of course in his mind the existence of the moorland panthers was beyond question. Andrew was less inclined to believe, and whined incessantly about what he thought was his older brother's undue caution when going out at night.
When he was four he was sent to Leek First School, as both his parents were adamant that a grounding in the basics of muggle education was important, and he promptly began to make friends his own age, though most of them lived in the village proper. He felt that his family lived too far away from everyone else, a feeling that was annoyingly mutual, or at least mutual on the part of the parents. Though he enjoyed the company of Lydia, he much preferred to be with other boys, and as Andrew was only one he hardly counted. He looked forward to attending school, and for six years he was out of bed before anyone else in the family, dressed and ready to go. It was at Leek First School that he discovered the joys of football, a joy his father later expounded upon. It was also at Leek First School that he discovered Science. What interested him the most was how different properties interacted with one another, and he quickly rose to the head of his class when it came to that particular subject.
When Gerry was eight Lydia received her letter from Hogwarts. The whole family was immensely pleased, though unsurprised as kitchen utensils tended to fly without provocation whenever she was upset. Gerry was immensely jealous that she got to submerge so totally into the wizarding world, while he was still being educated in the muggle one. He enjoyed his friends, of course, but he was sure that the wizarding world must be so much more exciting, and he couldn't understand why his mother had (in his mind) abandoned it for a husband. He had no doubts that he would once more follow in his older sister's footsteps, of course, but he was dreadfully impatient.
When he was 12 he finally was admitted to Hogwarts, eager to begin his studies in the wizarding world. He was a bit sad to leave behind his muggle friends, but he was secure in the knowledge that he would at least see them during the holidays. He did fairly well in school, excelling in potions but doing rather more abysmally in History of Magic and, later, Care of Magical Creatures. During his second year at Hogwarts Horace Slughorn replaced Severus Snape as Potions Master, a fact that grated on the boy, as Snape had played obvious favorites with the Slytherins, which gave him an edge aside from his talent. Slughorn, however, generally ignored him, a fact that grated on him. He had a talent for potions and found it interesting, but he could elicit no recognition from his professor. He attributed this slight to an article penned by one Rita Skeeter, and appearing in The Daily Prophet that summer, investigating claims that his mother's recipes caused ill-effects upon those of muggle-only parentage. As far as Gerry was concerned this was a ridiculous assertion, particularly as the only evidence was a single claim of singed eyebrows by a witch whose friends claimed she was quite inept in the kitchen. His mother's marriage to a muggle did not at all deter Rita from slandering his mother in four paragraphs of pure venom, and it did not prevent enough people from believing her that Penelope retreated from public life, throwing herself into work on the family's ranch. Slughorn's disregard seemed much less important, however, when Dumbledore was murdered at the end of the year.
The next year Professor Snape was elevated to Head Master, and muggle-borns were no longer accepted at Hogwarts. Gerry was grateful that only one of his parents was non-magical, but nevertheless nervous that the hostility towards those with no wizarding parentage should soon be redirected towards the half-bloods. Andrew did not get a letter to Hogwarts, and though he was crushed he had never shown any magical ability, so it was not a surprise, and Gerry was secretly relieved that his eleven year old brother would not join him in an unfriendly environment. Slughorn was now the head of Slytherin, though now Gerry wasn't sure he minded being ignored, so long as he and Lydia were safe. That year culminated in a battle against Voldemort, a battle that Gerry was not allowed to take part in -- nor was he certain he desired to. Fortunately, Lydia refused to fight, either, so at least he had her to cling to in Hogsmeade, as the battle raged in the school grounds.
The next two years saw Hogwarts closed. Like most of his peers he stayed home as the wizarding world recovered from the terror of the war. His mother attempted to continue his studies, but he spent most of his time helping with the sheep. After three years spent at Hogwarts, thoroughly immersed in the world of magic and sharing close quarters with other wizards his age this sudden return to home was almost a worse blow than the difficult, terrifying year of Wizard supremacy that had lead up to it. After all, he was only 15 and the fright quickly gave way to more mundane teenage concerns, such as missing his friends and shirking chores. And in the midst of this renewed commitment to a peaceful world of magic, Lydia married her sweetheart and moved with him to London. She owns the creatively named Brindley's Bakery, as she shares her mother's aptitude for baking. Her husband, Jacob Brindley, is passionate about art, a fact reflected in the names of the Brindley's three daughters: Artemisia, Sofonisba, and Fede. This meant it was left to Gerry and Andrew helping to look after the sheep, and Andrew was not a terrific amount of help. The youngest Malloy, Andrew, has no magical talent at all, and as such has been quite coddled by his parents, who seem to be trying to make up for this curious lack. He helps out on his father's farm, but at the age of 35 still lives with his parents, though Gerry is unsure whether Andy is unable or simply unwilling to make anything of himself.
In what would have been Gerry's sixth year of schooling Hogwarts was reopened. Two years with no formal magical training left him a bit rustier than he would have liked, and he considered it terribly unfair that he was now only in fourth year at the age of 17, but at the same time he was grateful to be back at Hogwarts studying magic, and as few of his peers had been sent to foreign schools he at least was not alone in being held back. The teachers did have to play some degree of catch-up, more than they ordinarily would have if their students had only been missing for one summer, but because of the two years absence they drove the students harder than Gerry thought necessary. Then again, he wasn't always paying as much attention as he could have been, particularly in classes that bored him, as evidenced by the dismal marks he received on his Care of Magical Creatures O.W.L.
As he became further and further immersed in the wizarding world he lost contact with the muggle friends of his early childhood, and became fast friends with a group of fellow Slytherins in his year. It was soon apparent that Gerard Malloy, Stewart Chapman and Damocles Oliver were inseparable. Gerry dated around a bit, but the girl he was most interested in was one Isadora Cohen. At the age of 21, after finally graduating, he obtained a job working at Slug and Jigger's Apothecary, and the two began going steady. He was sure that things were going well, until he invited her on a trip to Paris with his hard-earned funds. He chose a nice restaurant and a starlit night and proposed. She rejected him. This unexpected event crushed him, and he returned home a week earlier than planned. His friends were sympathetic, and attempted to cheer him up. Stewart chose this time to admit he had been nourishing a faint hope that Gerry might be interested in men, which not only failed to make Gerry feel better but which resulted in him cutting off contact with both Stewart and Damocles for almost a year. During this time he became aware that Horace Slughorn was retiring, and Hogwarts was seeking a replacement. He immediately took The Knight Bus to Hogwarts, eager to submit his application. He was greatly interested not only in teaching a subject he loved, but in taking over the position from a professor who had snubbed him during his school years.
After 13 years of teaching at Hogwarts, and seven as head of Slytherin, he's begun looking at a promotion, hoping that Professor McGonagall will step down soon. She's filled the role capably enough, but with the recent disasters at Hogwarts it looks as though it is time for someone new to take the reigns, and he would love to be that person. Of course, he would also love if these bizarre incidents would simply cease before the media gets wind of them, as that would only lead to Hogwarts closing once more -- or so he believes -- and continuing education is much more important than potential bodily harm, particularly as young witches and wizards are all the time injuring themselves without the help of incidents. In his opinion, the most intolerable mystery isn't how objects are springing to life and attacking students, but how two of those students ended up in his office without any effort at all. He takes their intrusion as a personal attack on him and his ability to perform his job, and as such has gotten much more short with both students (particularly the seventh years, who apparently think they can get away with trespassing) and fellow faculty lately.
How many years have you been teaching at Hogwarts:13
__Prove Yourself__ Sample RP: 3 FULL paragraphs Gerry folded his arms across his chest, doing his very best not to glower. He felt quite certain that the curious incidents plaguing his school were nothing short of an indictment of his magic skills, particularly the ability of his students to enter his office without either suffering the consequences of his wards or picking them apart. Not only was his ego wounded (a far more dreadful affair than wounded students, if he were entirely honest about it), but he had been envisioning the headlines that would generate from the moment it had been discovered. And his own fallibility aside, he was certain that the merest hint of suspicious activity within these walls would mean a clamor for the school to close until the source of the disturbances had been discovered. The very idea he might be forced to return to his parents cottage sent shudders of revulsion through the Potion's Master; he was fond of his family, but he loathed their flock of sheep, and he knew his parents would rope him into helping should he go back.
He had already endured two years of Hogwarts closing, and though that was years ago the delay in his education and subsequent graduation still grated on him; it was hardly fair to force any of his own students to go through that when he had despised having to do it himself. So he was, for once, entirely in agreement with McGonagall: Nobody outside of Hogwarts should know a thing, or else the press would bring the public down upon them in a whirlwind of unjust accusations and exaggerated claims of injuries. Not that many people had been injured, and besides, even when there was no suspicions of sinister activity students were constantly visiting the hospital wings. Duels with fellow students, and accidents brought about by inexperienced magic users attempting spells beyond them were simply natural. He had seen plenty of cauldrons boiling over, and potions exploding, in his thirteen years of teaching, usually due to negligence rather than mysterious outside forces.
"Oh, possession, eh, that's easy then, just ask the ghosts," He waved a hand in dismissal at Patricia's idea. He was curiously inclined to believe that any being capable of possession could not possibly make it into Hogwarts, previous unexplained events notwithstanding; whatever was causing these problems had to be another witch or wizard. Of course, this meant the culprit was probably in this room with them, but an inside job was easier for him to swallow, when it came to school security, than some outside force they had no knowledge of.
He nodded approvingly at Sofie's suggestion that students were inherently dishonest and mistrustful of adults. This was a reasonable enough assumption, one supported by his own memories of adolescence. "As well they should look at us with a jaundiced eye, I'm spiking their pumpkin juice with Veritaserum and marching every last one of them up to my office for questioning. Not like any of them are any good at Occlumency, they won't be able to stop it, and if I use the weak stuff the mental damage'll only be temporary. Nobody'll even notice." He did not, in fact, intend to actually execute this particular plan, but he derived a vicious glee at the thought of forcibly extracting information from the trespassing miscreants who had so violated his sense of worth as a wizard.
