The below guide is borrowed from thesato's @Combat Core Roleplaying Tutorial.

ADHERE TO THE RULES
While in an RP thread, stay to the rules of roleplaying. When typing a message out of character (OOC) type in bold lettering. Do not spam the thread, and always, always kind and courteous with other RP players.

1. HAVE YOUR CHARACTER COME TO LIFE.
It's all about the words you use while in an RP. If you use bland and boring words, your posts are going to be exactly that; bland and boring. Spice up your posts! Would you watch or read Naruto if everything they did was broken down into choppy undescriptive movements? Well if you said no, you're human! If you said yes, please go outside and watch the ants crawl, because that will probably be just as entertaining for you as RPing would be.
Okay here are some sample's of good ways to make actions and movement for your characters fun and interesting to both read and write!

Quote:

QUOTE
Bob leapt off of the branch, wind blowing through his hair and kunai glinting from the suns light; preparing to strike the enemy chunnin below. Striking quickly and surely, the enemy nin, barely made a noise as the life was choked out of him.

OR
Quote:

QUOTE
Walking down the road, Bob could feel the sun on the back of his neck. Shielding his eyes from the glare he looked up into the sky behind him, watching as Konoha faded into the distance.

The above are both good examples of RP playing. Here is an example of bad RPing.

Quote:

QUOTE
Susan walked away. Susan was angry. So Susan walked away.

OR
Quote:

QUOTE
walking with a weapon susan attacks all the bad guys like she was some kind of demon a demon with fangs and a demon that was angry. she was angry because she had had to fight and had to kill and she didnt like killing but she liked fighting because fighting was fun and even fighting could be fun if killing wasnt apart of fighting.

Those are bad examples of roleplaying. For the sake of yourself, and your fellow RP players, if you want to play in an RP post longer than a few sentences in a post. Be descriptive, and always try and use grammar, proper spelling and punctuation. You don't have to be an english graduate to roleplay and your spelling doesn't have to be perfect, or immaculate. Just make it readable and please try not to use short-forms like: (lol, wtf, omg, lmao, w/e, etc...etc..) Remember an RP is a large story with the contribution of many authors, make this story readable.

2. HAVE YOUR CHARACTER THINK.
When in a RP, a player should always stict to a general style of playing. Every character has their story/plot/background, and every writer/RP player has their style of conveying that.
If you use 'italics and quotes' for conveying your character while thinking, stick to it. Don't all of a sudden type a message that your character is thinking, in bold or in another colour. Here are example's of how some people would convey thought's in an RP.

Quote:

QUOTE
'This is impossible,' Bob thought to himself. 'How can I possibly defeat a chunnin?'

OR
Quote:

QUOTE
This is insane, Bob thought to himself. How can I possibly defeat a chunnin?

Do you see how you broke down the sentence to explain and clarify that Bob was indeed thinking, while at the same time conveying Bob's thoughts? It's best to play this way when in an RP, it helps the roleplay flow, and doesn't make it sound repetitve and boring. Here is an example of a bad way to convey thoughts.

Quote:

QUOTE
I can't believe it Susan thought to herself. How am I supposed to live my life she thought as she jumped down out of the tree.

Do you see how everything is jammed together and the characters actions, and thoughts are mingled? This is confusing and when stringed together continuously in a paragraph, horribly difficult to read.

3. HAVE YOUR CHARACTER COMMUNICATE
Like all other stories, characters need to communicate with one another. So to be able to do this effectively punctuation or font colour is necessary. Here are some examples of good communication in an RP.

Quote:

QUOTE
"I can't believe it." Bob spoke, his eyes wide with horror and his body shaking.
"He...he was my brother! How could this happen? How could I let him die?" The old jounin fell to the ground shaking uncontrollably. "Why did this happen to you Billy? How could I let this happen to you?!"

OR

Do you see how you can combine description of action and what's going on with your dialogue? This is extremely effective when RPing and helps to convey the emotions of the character better. If you feel it necessary,
bold, italic or underline a key word in the dialogue to emphasise the meaning of it. This can make that word stand out that much more necessary to convey the importance of it.

4. MULTIPLE CHARACTER DIALOGUE
Sometimes in a RPing post, you get to communicate by using another character, enemy, or even a fellow RPer. In these cases it's important to remember the same ideals of the above section. In the below examples Bob and Susan will have a frog summon which they will communicate with.

QUOTE
"I can't believe it!" Bob exclaimed in disbelief as he surveyed the area around him. "We're lost! This is just great."
"Calm yourself." Croaked the large frog as it sat upon the stone.
"We will get out of this soon enough, no need to worry yourself."

Calm yourself." Croaked the large frog as it sat upon the stone. "We will get out of this soon enough, no need to worry yourself".

By using bolding and colour effectively the characters were able to interact without confusing the reader. Now observe a bad communication post.

Quote:

QUOTE
"You stole my chocolate" Susan said. "No I didn't. You ate it you pig." Said the frog. "No you stole it." "No you stole it." "Okay you stole it." "No you stole it." "Alright I did eat it." "No actually I ate it." Susan said. "Not really look I have the wrapper." It said happily.

As you can see the dialogue wasn't broken apart, you aren't even able to tell who is talking at times! That is a very good example of a very bad dialogue conversation. Now if you are to communicate with a group of characters, some being your own and some being others, you can combine techniques, or simply just use good diction to explain who is talking. For example:

Quote:

QUOTE
"Where should we go?" Asked a confused and tired Bob, with a sigh.
"We could always seperate, and perhaps meet up later." Replied, an equally exhausted frog summon. "Whatever we do, I don't want to walk anymore."

"I agree with you one hundred percent!" Bob exclaimed, as he wiped his brow with the back of his sleeve.

You weaklings! Susan laughed, her laughter echoing off the walls of the closed valley. I could still run a mile! And I wouldn't even break a sweat!

Do you see how by using both a combined style can achieve the creation of three solid characters, all communication together? By doing this it really defines who is who, and allows the reader to understand and take in large posts easier, then having to decipher who is talking, when.

5. RP FIGHTING
All RP's need action! That's where fighting comes in.
That's why if you want to be a good RP player, you have to try and make your fights both easy to read/comprehend and also entertaining! If you're having fun writing it, then chances are your readers are having fun reading it! Try using words that simulate sounds such as 'thump', 'thwack', 'smack'. Always try and change up sentence structure, and don't keep using the same word for your enemy/player. If he's a Chunnin from Konoha, and his name is Billy, then call him 'Billy', 'Chunnin', 'Konoha Chunnin', 'Nin', 'Assailant', etc, etc. Try and mix it up. If you keep tying the same word over and over again, your battle seems repetitive even if it isn't in content. Here are some examples of good and bad battling. Good RP battling:

Quote:

QUOTE
Bob quickly ducked down and out of the way as a fireball whizzed by his head, scorching his hair and leaving the burning stench of it, in the air.
"Damn you!" Screamed the enemy nin, as it raced towards him with wild abandon.
Thinking quickly, Bob kicked up dirt into the eyes of the Kiri chunnin, and in a flash disappeared from his enemies sight. Screaming with rage, the chunnin began swinging wildly in every direction as Bob snuck up behind him and began to mould chakra to form: rasengan.

As you can see by combining different techniques of both interaction of dialogue and actions you can make a small paragraph exciting! It's easy! Now here's an example of what not to do while RP battling:

Quote:

QUOTE
Susan swung a fist at Billy. It hit. She kicked him. He yelled in pain. He tried to punch her. He was to slow. She hit him again.
"I bet that hurt." And she hit him again.

As you can see...that was BAD rp fighting. Be descriptive, and try not to make the fight seem choppy.

Another important rule to keep note of is

No Power Playing. Taking someone else’s character and telling them what they do. This includes killing them, making them unconscious, critically injuring them, or making big decisions for them. Also, if people are asleep, knocked out, or dying; it is their choice to stay like that. You must talk to the person first and ask for permission before you power play.
If you are using someone else’s character to talk, try to keep to their personality.

When you attack an opponent, always leave the other person with the option of being able to dodge or take the hit. But on the otherside of that, you don't want to be the one taking every hit each time. Try to balance it out and be fair. Don't expect to dodge every attack. But also don't make yourself appear to be an immortal, taking mutltiple attacks full force and rising up for more.
