hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry,
1977-1978.
You would have to be deaf to miss the whispers of a powerful force that is determined to eliminate the "unclean" blood from society. You would have to be blind to fail to see it in the papers, stories of mysterious deaths and disappearances. The rumors, the rumblings of war and terror-the loss of life and lack of security, only confirm what society already knew to be true. They were under assault.
However-lately, for the first time in many grim years, there is hope. They may be quiet, but stories exist-whispers of a group of witches and wizards who dare defy He Who Must Not Be Named.

The Ministry has nothing to say about it-a parrot, His tool, no one would expect it. Society doesn't know these faceless men and women. All they know is that they have hope. Someone, somewhere, is standing up for what they believe is right. Standing in defense of the "unclean", of the "impure". Of those who dared to speak out against such senseless slaughter.
Merlin have mercy, many think-for He Who Must Not Be Named certainly has none. Not for them.

This force needs no help, though-nor any mercy, for they are without any, themselves. With numbers drawing upon Aurors, Ministry officials who refused to be tainted by a corrupted Government and witches and wizards in every occupation, every family, across the country-this shadowy order deals death just as freely as does their opponents. While the Death Eaters are a known force, these individuals are a mystery-and a worthy, frightening opponent for He Who Must Not Be Named, who grows more and more desperate to crush any and all resistance by the day.

However, safely ensconced within the stalwart walls of Hogwarts, students-while not oblivious-remain unexposed to the turmoil of the outside world. Letters and newspapers are all they have to inform them of the dramatic changes of the society they once thought they knew. Certainly, evil has long arms-and those already touched by Him exist within the school grounds. Violence between students has escalated, becoming more and more dangerous in their choice of weapons. Tensions grow ever higher as the world outside continues to deteriorate.

As the death toll rises, wizards everywhere are left to pick a side. To fight Him is to die. To aid him, impossible. And yet-picking no side at all is even less of an option-for, to wait, fraught with hope that someone, somewhere, will become strong enough to overthrow He Who Must Not Be Named, is to ask for death. He does not tolerate nonbelievers. Instead, they choose to offer no resistance, ducking their head and drawing no attention to themselves.

A war is brewing-between the Death Eaters and a nameless, faceless foe that dares to stand for the last bit of anything that might be good.
Even as students are forced into discovering what they believe, what they would fight for and who is worth dying for-they are reminded, that this isn't goodbye.
Friends can be found in even the darkest of times.
