Result of the Wednesday July 16, 2008 PDL game between Toronto Lynx and Cincinnati Kings played at Varsity Centre in Toronto at 11:00am.

19 min…Lynx Daniel Revivo GOAL…Lynx Lloyd Grist rush on left to near corner flag and his low cross is sent back to Revivo who one-touches 18 yard shot into low right corner of net.

20 min…Lynx Daniel Revivo GOAL…Lynx Lloyd Grist rush on left. He rolls cross through traffic in box and Revivo’s low 10 yard shot is into center of goal.

42 min…Lynx Daniel Revivo GOAL…Lynx Lloyd Grist rush on left to get to ball and cross into box has Revivo head ball under flying goalie Aaron Arndt from 5 yards.

83 min…Lynx Daniel Revivo GOAL…Revivo dekes around Kings defender Jimmy Cummings inside and outside and as he’s being hung onto pokes 5 yard shot from left into right corner of net as goalie is guarding the left post.

89 min…Lynx RED card…Erik DiLorenzo for his part in a pushing match.
………..Kings RED card…Branden Stelmak for his part in a pushing match. (although most of the incident involving a dozen players he was laying face down on the turf looking like he’d be punched in the face). I missed the beginning of this because I was watching the Kings goal kick 70 yards away.

Attendance was at least 2000 and I could believe the 2500 estimate for this midday game. The theme was “Summer Sizzler Youth Day” and the stand was packed with children from summer and soccer camps. Canadian FIFA rep/broadcast commentator Dick Howard took the ceremonial kickoff.

Today’s game makes 9 goals for Revivo and his orange coloured boots on the year and he increases his lead as the Lynx top scorer. After the third goal by Revivo, a kid threw his baseball cap from the stands onto the track. Although these were kids, as commented in the press box this was the first time where the visitors were actually booed and giving the home team a fan advantage.

Nils Binstock earned the shutout for the Lynx and had to make a few tough saves to preserve it and get a break when a Kings goal was called back for a legit offside call.

Most important stop for him was two minutes after the second Lynx goal when he caught King David Lopez-Cepero’s 26 yard freekick blast up the middle by flying to the left side of the net. This play kept the Lynx from having the momentum swung the Kings way.

The program at today’s game pointed out that a win today guaranteed that the Lynx would finish with a winning record for only the second time in their history. It also said the Cincinnati Kings dropped from the 2nd division of the USL to the PDL level this year. The Lynx dropped to the PDL from 1st division USL in 2007.

The Lynx have one more regular season game this year and that is this Sunday also at Varsity Centre when they play division leaders Michigan Bucks. Hopefully the Bucks will win one more game before they get to Toronto to avoid the awkward situation of having the Bucks having to win the conference to let a third team from their division (i.e. the Lynx) into the playoffs. If Thunder Bay wins the conference, they would have three teams from their own division make the playoffs and leave the Lynx out as only two from the Great Lakes division would then make the playoffs. It is possible to have the dilemma of the choice of the Lynx winning their final game of the season against the Bucks and knock themselves out of the playoffs or deliberately losing to ensure the Bucks win the conference and guarantee three spots. If the Lynx make the playoffs, they will play the second place team Cleveland Internationals on the road in a one game playoff. That makes this Sunday’s game the last home game of the season.

Dynamic Duo Crown Kings

Four goals by Revivo and three assists by Grist lead Lynx to 4-0 rout over Cincinnati

Match Summary:

The dynamic tandem of Daniel Revivo and Lloyd Grist combined to lead the Toronto Lynx to a definitive 4-0 thrashing of the Cincinnati Kings this afternoon in front of a huge crowd at Varsity Centre in downtown Toronto. Grist set up three of Revivo’s four goals on the day in a stunning display of offensive power from the Lynx in the victory, which clinches a winning record for the team for the first time since 2000. Toronto’s record soars to 8-5-2 (26 points) on the season, while Cincinnati wraps up their inaugural PDL season at 3-10-3 (12 points). Toronto remains firmly in the playoff hunt, and can clinch a Central Conference playoff berth with any combination of Michigan Buck wins and Thunder Bay Chill losses totalling two in the last week of action prior to the post season.

Toronto struck early and often in the first half to put the game away before intermission. Revivo opened the scoring in the 20th minute with his sixth goal of the season on a powerful blast from the top of the 18-yard box into the top right corner of the Cincinnati goal. Grist dribbled deep into Kings territory, brought the ball across the end line, and spotted Revivo all alone at the top of the box. His pin-point pass found the right boot of Revivo, and the Richmond Hill native made no mistake with his shot to put the Lynx up 1-0 and send the 3,000 plus young fans in attendance on Youth Day into a rabid frenzy.

The two teamed up again a scant one minute later to give the Lynx a commanding two-goal lead. Grist again was let loose on the left side of the pitch, and his cross found Revivo once again left uncovered in front of the goal. Revivo slid across the turf and met the pass, knocking it past the Kings keeper for his second of the afternoon.

Revivo earned his hat trick in the 44th minute and Grist his third assist of the game when he headed home the Welshman’s cross for a 3-0 Lynx lead going into the break.

Toronto rounded out the scoring on the afternoon in the 84th minute when Revivo broke in on goal unchecked and beat the Cincinnati keeper to a loose ball and slotted it past him into the goal, putting the Lynx up 4-0. The Kings battled gamely to score as time wound down, but could not solve the Lynx defense or beat Nils Binstock in net, and the game ended with Toronto earning the maximum three points for their effort. Binstock picked up his sixth clean sheet of the year in goal, facing nine Kings shots throughout the match.

The only dark spot of the afternoon was the dismissal of captain Erik DiLorenzo in the 90th minute following a scuffle near midfield, which also saw Kings defender Tony Ray shown the red card by the referee. DiLorenzo will sit out at least Sunday’s match against the Michigan Bucks as a result of the red-card.

The Lynx wrap up their 2008 regular season on Sunday afternoon, July 20, at Varsity Centre at 4:00 PM against the Conference-leading Michigan Bucks. One dollar from each ticket sold for the game will be donated to the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation. The annual Toronto Lynx Player Awards will also be presented prior to kick-off. As pointed out by a poster at Big Soccer...the Lynx will have to lose their game to make the playoffs and boost Michigan to first overall.

Thunder Bay have two home games against the 0-14 Springfield Demize. Do Bart and Homer Simpson play for that team?
