Toronto FC Head Coach and Technical Director Aron Winter announced Monday restructuring moves that will see First Team Assistant Bob de Klerk promoted to Technical Manager and Toronto FC Junior Academy Coach Jim Brennan move to the First Team as an Assistant Coach.

In this new role de Klerk will be responsible for Toronto FC’s technical program, including advance and international scouting, as well as serving as the technical conduit between the First Team and Academy program. He will also assist players transitioning from the Academy into the First Team and support the education of Toronto FC coaches at all levels.

Brennan joins Toronto FC’s First Team after spending the last 15 months coaching TFC's (U-17) Junior Academy Team. Brennan became Toronto FC's first roster player and team captain in club history in September 2006. He retired as a player in 2010. Brennan joins First Team Coach Jason Bent and Goalkeeping Coach Stewart Kerr.  Additionally, Director of Player Development Paul Mariner will take a more active role on the pitch, occasionally coaching the team’s strikers, in addition to his regular responsibilities.

“We believe these decisions will benefit our club from top to bottom.  Bob’s new position will allow the team to benefit more from his technical expertise and have him play a more active role in the day-to-day operations of the club off-the-pitch,” said Winter. “Our U-17 Academy program has done well under Jimmy's direction. The goal of our Academy is provide growth and development for our players and our coaches. This promotion is a well-deserved opportunity for Jimmy.”

Copying myself from the Montreal thread:

Presumably Crazy Bob losing it again was a factor in his move to a position off the pitch.

http://www.torontofc.ca/news/2012/05/reds-...-office-changes

I guess this means no more Crazy Bob Victory Jigs ™. :(

He's like the anti-Winter. I suppose that makes him Summer.

First question: who made this decision? Sounds from the announcement like the decision was Winter's, but I can't imagine this is the case.

Second question: is De Klerk's change really a promotion?

A part of me wonders if the powers that be have seen the relative success of young, recently-retired players like Kreis, Marsch, and Olsen and are positioning Brennan to be the eventual successor.

Would it be churlish to make a comment referencing "deck chairs" and "Titanic"?

It seems like the FO is trying to put the squeeze on Winter in a move to make Brennan coach. They've isolated him by moving BDK upstairs, and his move isn't a promotion at all. His passion and craziness on the touchline is what this team needs, not the passive nature Winter has.

haha, brennan as coach would be an even bigger clusterfuck. people say winter is underqualified?

not sure what to think. i've resigned myself to just kick back and go with the flow. find myself a lot less frustrated that way.

Seems to be the thing to do, letting it wash over you that is....

As much as I wanna see a fellow Newmarket boy (Brennan) continue to thrive in the organization I think he is well out of his depth. Prove us wrong, Jimmy!

Not mentioned in that release was the bit about Brizzo making the lateral move from Associate Director of Ill to Deputy Director of Fresh, with a new mandate to keep things too legit while incorporating a new degree of dopeness.

Brizzo 2025. Get in on the ground level.

yup, not sure what another feel good appointment is going to do for us but I wish Jimmy well. Given a pick of former Alumn to take over that role I would have asked for Carl Robinson.

I have no idea what to make of this or what to expect going forward.

Well, at least he is someone that played in the league recently & can relate to the players.
Winter is probably having a hard time of it, & maybe this will help a little. Probably not, but will see.

Could make it easier to sack Winter and keep BDK though. Now they are separated sort of.

Yes, that was my thinking as well. Looks like the club values what these two bring to organization in regards to player development but arent convinced in their abilities as coaches in this league. Perhaps BDK is more suited to that role (or other roles in the organization) but they think that If Winter cant be a coach, then there is not much else he could do.

Keep in mind those recent reports (see Anselmi interview on TSN Radio) of the team meeting last week of coaches and top brass, whereby the team decide to ditch the tactics and philopsphy (ie .: Total soccer) in favour of doing whatever its takes to win.
