QUOTE (ThisIsAnfield @ Apr 24 2012, 04:18 PM)
QUOTE (SSK @ Apr 23 2012, 10:34 PM)
This Alberta election coverage is bizzare.

I watched a bit of the French elections yesterday on TV5. Watching the left wing candidates made me feel stupid because I understood very little of what they said, but, then the far-right candidate came on and I understood most of what they said. Reason: left-wing candidates used longer sentences (I understood the general theme and I could make out individual words, but, I guess I didn't have the working memory to figure out the exact meaning of the sentences and take in new words from the ongoing speech at the same time) whereas right-wing used very short sentences/spoke at a third-grade level.

I'm confused by this.

Were you watching in French?

If not, I'm lost to the point you're making. That the right is not as intelligent as the left, that the right communicates more effectively than the left, that the left is long-winded as opposed to their more concise right rivals, or that you don't understand big words and complex or compound sentences when spoken by politicians? ;)

Either way, I'm pretty sure you just explained why Alberta votes the way it does...which surprisingly to me is not as racist/homophobic as I originally thought.

Edit: You meant France-French! Now I get it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most European governments gearing up to or already actively appealing to the far-right and nationalists these days? I wasn't around at the turn of the last century, but I gather the underlying sentiment in most nations over there is akin to the tone that prevailed prior to the first world wars, just a different ideology being menaced by sharpening bayonets this time around.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, I was talking about two different elections.

Re: what I was saying: I was saying all those things (and the last point when it comes to languages I don't know very well).

Re: trend in Europe. Yep, it is worrying, but, the polls still point towards a Socialist victory in France, and Merkel's party is losing its grip in state elections. The Dutch government on the other hand fell because Geert Wilders didn't support the budget because of his opposition to Europe.

Yeah, you just knew the knowledge was flowing at you, when you heard the familiar chirp of bits and bytes coming through the dial-up :)

Parents have it easy as hell these days. When I was younger and we couldn't get near one of those buildings with the Dewey decimal system, we asked our knowledgeable parents.

The lads that have kids still call me to Google shit for them. Fowler help their young'uns when the 'net's down.

Edit: Tyler and Chris are going to have to decide who gets to keep the avatar and who finds a new one. I vote Tyler finds a new one. ^_^

Fuck. I just noticed that, when reading a book, my eyes occasionally wander to the top-right corner of the page (b/c I do that when reading on my computer or phone to look at the time).

Re: libraries. As a kid, my brother used to keep all kinds of stats e.g. tennis grandslam winners over the years. He'd get really happy if an article mentioned winners of years past and would excitedly enter that new bit of information into his notebook. He stopped doing that when we got a library membership.

Saw him both at Lollapalooza '95 and, later, at Varsity Arena. The opening act that night was The Roots.
