That's the name 'thunderstick'... recall having those at TFC games too... what a waste of plastic by lowes.. Yes coaches moaned and some players too, but there was no such outcry to ban them vuvuzelas.. perhaps due to lack of audience? ;) |

well they did moan then too....
from Should Fifa Ban The Vuvuzela sound of South Africa June 17, 2009 if you have been following the Confederations Cup you might have been thinking what is that noise in the background to us sounds like a swarm of bees! But no this is the Vuvuzela very famous in south africa and the sound of South African football. And the sound? An elephant, a swarm of angry bees, a fog horn – whatever it is, it is loud. When there’s action near the goal mouth, it is something to behold; a sound you are unlikely to forget in a hurry. The debate is now should they have them in the crowd for the world cup 2010? The world football governing body said on 11 July 2008 that fans could bring their vuvuzelas to stadiums for 2010 World Cup matches could be a big mistake?.The announcement on 15 May 2004 that South Africa would host the FIFA World Cup in 2010 gave the vuvuzela a major boost, with some 20 000 sold on the day! "With the start of the Confederations Cup, more people will be introduced to these. I'm all for "culture," but these are just incessant noise. You can't really tell me that these provide "atmosphere" to a match. Why can't there be some sort of songs/appropriate times to blow them? (i.e. after a goal.) I can't imagine South Africa really wants their claim to fame to be a constant drone coming from a plastic horn that takes as much skill to play as breathing... You're better than that! I couldn't even watch today's matches b/c the commentary was drown out by irritating BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH sounds... Good for ratings! I know I'm not alone on this." TUESDAY, JUNE 23, 2009 reuters "The debate around the vuvuzela was always going to generate big noise but for some South African commentators it has become almost a neo-colonial conflict. The noisy trumpet, which dominates the sound waves around the stadiums during the Confederations Cup, has got a lot of people covering their ears. Complaints from TV viewers across Europe have been vociferous enough for the future of the plastic pest to become the major item on the agenda at the series of press conferences FIFA president Sepp Blatter has held during the tournament in South Africa." from 2007 "Absa Rugby Stadium Manager Gary Parker-Nance said that vuvuzelas were definitely not allowed at the stadium during rugby matches. "This is because many of the rugby patrons have complained about the noise that emanates from the vuvuzela and we have to take into consideration what the majority of people want." |

Didn't moan enough, you'd imagine broadcasters would be anticipating annoyed audiences... I don't see how horn could be banned, but surely with descent equalizer buzzing sound could be tuned down. I watched them conf games, yes it was weird, but always thought this is how games in Africa are. |

The author of said article can feel free to seek nourishment picking the peanuts out of my shit.
Fuck off and die. The reasons why it sucks, isn't remotely traditional, and doesn't contribute anything remotely positive are well-documented. |

But insofar as that's true, it suggests that we hope that those using it get sick of it and do something else... and stop there. Or, at most, ban it locally, on a country-by-country basis. Appealing for a global ban? Idiotic, presumptuous, and childis indeed. (and contrary to my rep here, I don't see opposition to the vuvuzela as in any way imperialistic, as the article suggests. I just think it's embarrassing, like in the stereotypical-tory-of-the-american-tourist-traveling-who-freaks-out-cause-there's-no-mcdonalds-and-all-the-food-is-scary kind of way.) Sid Lowe? nah I'd like to keep him around actually.. but I don't care much for the vuvuzela myself though. definitely keep the ban on air horns anywhere there is one, and wouldn't be surprised if some bans were brought into place where none currently exist. |

Maybe if they brought Vuvuzela's to Canada and BMO, we could finally retire as vocal supporters. I'd just sit down and blow my Vuvuzela for 90 minutes. Easier than singing, chanting and bouncing around.

Anyone watching the French match right now? In the opening of the match they've somehow managed to find a way to make these things a bigger irritant by blowing them in simultaneous blasts.
It sounded like 6 million Canadian geese doing the Mighty Duck quack. |
