Misc 'facts' about West Ham
- One of first clubs to play under artificial lighting, due in no small part to the team association with the shipyard,
lighting was temporarily installed as required in 1895. The club would not again have home lighting till the 1950s
- there is no ham in West Ham United, its pronounced 'Wess-stam you-nye-id'
-the club is officially in E13'Upton Park' but the boundary has been drawn around the club, on three sides is E6 East Ham
- if you get off at West Ham station you have a long walk, a very long walk, call it East end humour... the closest is
Upton Park but if your going to some of the prematch boozers you might want the East Ham stop
- if they build the new stadium as rumoured then ignore the previous point as West Ham stop will then be the closest, making it and Arsenal the only London teams with stops nearby the ground with same name as team
- Forbes last report (posted march 2007 on 2006 data) rated WHUFC 23rd 'biggest' club in the world, 10th in UK and 9th in England, slightly bigger than Rangers and Aston Villa, slightly smaller than Everton
***According to noted historian Alf Garnet, long before the modern day football Association got started, before the football leagues,
there was football at West Ham , founded by none other than Henry VIII. This was so he would have something to do on saturdays when he was visiting her
at the house he bought her next door to the ground. There seems to be some confusion as to the origin of the shirts because
one instance declared claret to be the choice of Henry favourite drink and the blue blooded arms. An earlier tale tells us that Anne
liked the sky blue kits and they wore those for a while until she had her head lopped off. She was wearing a kit to the block and when henry saw how the blood
flowed all over her torso he said 'Ill have some of that' and had new kits deigned. The squad had a new ball for practice too but it was abit lumpy. By the reign of Elizabeth I the team had won 10 cup finals, which she alluded to in her
speech prior to the engagement versus the Armada. It said she only smiled when hearing news of a West Ham victory. Not much more is recorded and it is assumed that football fell out of favour with Royal house holds
probably around the middle of 1600s and possibly during the rule of Cromwell.

Englands number six ....

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/pre...89520-20313671/ENGLAND NO.1 IS HAVING A LAUGH
Keeper Robert Green is planning to wear gloves embroidered with "England's No. 6" today in a cheeky protest at his exclusion from the England set-up.
The West Ham keeper was left out of Fabio Capello's first squad last week despite being in stunning form this season for his club. And as a joke with the Hammers fans who constantly chant he is England's No. 1, he is set to unveil them against Birmingham at Upton Park this afternoon.
Green ordered the personalised pair from his glove makers Sells and tested them out in training yesterday to be ready for today's Premier League clash.
A close friend said: "Robert has got a great sense of humour and there has been banter with the West Ham fans all season. They keep chanting England's No. 1 - and he sticks up six fingers to show where he thinks he is in the pecking order. That is No. 6. This is just Robert taking the joke a step further by wearing these gloves. It is really tongue in cheek and not meant to be having a go at anyone. It is not a protest. He is having a laugh at his own expense.

I'm by no means a fan of the Hammers, but I really like what you've done here.
And that's not to say I dislike them...just Lucas Neill.
Remember that upright scissor kick goal DiCanio scored? I still see that goal in all kinds of compilations around the world...
ThisIsAnfield - February 12, 2008 08:24 AM (GMT)
Oh shit! I forgot it was you guys in '95 that cost the Sc*m the title.
...And my esteem for West Ham rises...

yep against the wombles ...I take it you mean this one ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezfOlus9CdwI took half dozen trips to UK to finally see him score a goal and I got rewarded in his last home match at E13 vs the rentboys , someone posted this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7faS6Wend8k from that match but i cant find that goal
I think this was an even prettier goal, it doesnt touch the ground form time its delivered, Dicanio didnt score it but he did take the corner, joe cole worked it over to sinclair and then blammo

Craig Bellamy is fuking awsome, that is all.
Also, has Ashton pretty much taken over the #1 spot (I know Bellamy is hurt, but he seemed to be getting bumped out by Ashton anyhow?)

I saw their recent match on tv, and I don't think Hammers fans are too impressed with Ashton (he does seem to waste a lot of chances). Bellamy will probably get a run in the side when he's fit, but when will that be now? October?

October, maybe if we're lucky...
I've just been dreaming of a Bellamy - Ashton striker partnership. With the speed, strength, and skill available, they would be brilliant.
At the beginning of the season, fans were all about Ashton. When he made his return and scored his first goal everyone went nuts. Now a days people are saying he's out of shape (although a lot of people said that about Tevez...) and that he's lost his form. He's just in a slump and needs to get himself a 'Slump Buster'

Well, it wasn't pretty this morning at all. Fulham got a little too close at times, but Green was good when he had to be and lucky at others. Cole needs to finish some of those chances .... the header he got away off of Freddy's cross should have gone in.
Stalteri looked more than decent at right back for Fulham. If he sticks with them it's too bad they're going down ...

RIP Bobby Moore

I enjoyed the minute of celebration before the match. i thought it was more appropriate than a moment of silence. pretty special guy, he was.

"Well thats West Ham innit..."
Fear not, such is the essence of west ham, you dont expect consistency do you?. Rarely a season goes by without some good guttings, especially when noones backs up against the wall. West Ham havent won at Anfield since the early sixties, usually they roll over and play dead hoping not to pick up an injury, and as they did beat them at UP so Im not concerned . The team is relatively safe, a european spot seems quite unlikely, no cups to play for, times like these a good relegation battle make things a bit more interesting....

it wasn't green's fault. my granny could have scored if left wide open 3 yards from the goal.
it was a poor performance all around. really missing an attacking mid and a QUALITY striker.
i hope to see belamy paired with someone new for next year. with ashton and zamora for cover. and someone who can set them up.
oh, and ferdinand OUT!
BTW nice strike by gerrard.

I saw that. It was an amazing goal, Gerrard doing what he does best.
yeah true it wasn't Greens fault, but Torres had Green standing still on two occasions (first goal and diving header where he hit the post and out, that would've been a beauty). I think Green is an excellent keeper, but the defending left him with LITTLE chance, due to the quality of Torres.

Not confirmed by any means, just a bunch of blogs and rumours apparently leading back to ESPN.
Still if you can get your hands on tickets now you winner either way. I just wouldn't book plane tickets just yet if I'm from out of town.
