Title: Lynx Vs. White Eagles
Yes Im Peter Ing - July 10, 2006 04:01 AM (GMT)
I know that there are quite a few U-Sectarians on here who have never taken to the Lynx. I also know that quite a few of the old guard (me included) have really soured on the team. However, I'm actually half-way intrigued by this match the team has coming up on Friday against the Serbian White Eagles. Not so much because of the prospects of the on-field product, but rather by the potential the crowd holds. From what I hear (and see) the White Eagles have a solid little following, one that lays claim to a fair number of Ultra types. I think it'd be great opportunity for the U-Sector to finally test our "stuff" so to speak. Not only that, but I also think it'd just be a lot of fun.
We don't get many opportunities to square up against sizable opposition support, so why don't we take advantage of this one and give a go? I bet if we got good numbers out we could turn some heads and possibly attract some future members. Afterall, aren't these Serbian Ultras exactly the type of crowd we want to be targeting?

The Lynx win 4-3 in Penalty kicks after they played to a 2-2 tie in regulation and then a scoreless half hour of silver goal overtime.
details to follow...

The game was almost stopped in the first extra time, after the referee made a call that angered the serbian crowd. Some fans started to throw bottles at the referee. The referee picked up the ball and talked to the police for a bit, while the serbian players pleaded with the crowd to stop.
Jaime Dodds and Ryan Anstey were outstanding for the Lynx comming off the bench. The serbian team is really impressive considering they are in the CSL, their fans however have some work to do. I heard so many racist insults, towards the referee who was black, I though I was in Italy.

that's why they're the white eagles...bloody nazis

Result of the Friday July 14, 2006 Open Canada Cup 2nd round game between Serbian White Eagles of the CSL and Toronto Lynx of the USL played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 7:30pm.
23 min…White Eagles Nikola Budalic GOAL…WE player Sasa Viciknez wisely holds off running for a through ball because he was definitely offside. When the Lynx defenders seem to freeze, Budalic runs through to take ball and chip charging goalie Richard Goddard from 22 yards into center of net.
61 min…White Eagles Bozo Milic GOAL…WE Sasa Viciknez pushes pass through Lynx defenders in box and Milic beats offside trap. Milic rounds goalie on right and his sharp angle shot is into left corner of net. Milic then earns a YELLOW card for pulling off his shirt and leaving it in the Lynx box as he ran along the track to wave to the fans and hug players on their bench 50 yards away.
66 min…Lynx Jamie Dodds GOAL…Lynx get away on a 3 on 1 break and a player crosses in from the right that finds Dodds alone and his 10 yard shot from the left hits the underside of the bar and deflects down and bounces into net behind right post. (The deflection was similar to the Zinedine Zidane World Cup final goal but it ended up well behind the line).
88 min…WE Milan Janosevic trips up Lynx Ryan Anstey inside the WE box and referee Joe Fletcher has no delay in calling a Penalty kick.
88 min…Lynx Jamie Dodds GOAL…Dodds Penalty kick is into the left side of net with the goalie Dusan Belic moving away from the ball.
Regular time score…2-2.
Two 15 minute Silver goal periods were played with neither team scoring.
Penalty Kicks:
1. Lynx Jamie Dodds SCORES…Dodds perfect shot to left side of net as goalie crumples to right.
1. WE Nikola Budalic SCORES…Budalic low shot to left as goalie moves right.
2. Lynx Damien Pottinger blocked…Pottinger takes low weak shot to right and goalie Dusan Belic dives to right and stops.
2. WE Sinisa Ninkovic SCORES…Ninkovic shot to right side high leaving no chance for save.
3. Lynx Kevin Jeffrey SCORES…Jeffrey low roller to right as goalie slides left.
3. WE Bozo Milic SCORES…Milic shot to right corner of net as goalie Richard Goddard flies right but just out of his reach.
4. Lynx Cameron Medwin SCORES…Medwin’s shot is under bar to center of net over goalie.
4. WE Gabriel Pop misses…Pop blasts shot a good 3 yards wide left of the post as the goalie dives left.
5. Lynx Edgar Bartolomeu misses…Bartolomeu blasts his shot well over the net.
5. WE Sasa Viciknez misses…Viciknez blasts his shot off the crossbar and ball stays out.
6. Lynx Jeremy Sheppard SCORES…Sheppard shoots over crumpling goalie into left center of net.
6. WE Mario Ostojic misses…Ostojic blasts his shot off the crossbar and ball stays out.
Attendance was announced as 1511 and seemed legit as the stands were mostly full. The White Eagles were the hosts and it was a very pro White Eagles crowd. There were some Lynx fans with a few air horns used after the Lynx goals and penalty kick win. The Serb Ultras sang the whole game. They didn’t like the calls of referee Joe Fletcher and booed the Lynx forward Matthew Palleschi until he was subbed by Ryan Anstey at 62 minutes. Palleschi had drawn some free kicks when he was roughed up repeatedly by White Eagle defenders.
There was a police presence of two officers at the game and they took their places on the track. There was only some trouble at then end of the 1st overtime and the referee directed them over to some disturbance. Some White Eagles players came over to the stands to plead for the fans to keep calm. The PA announcer was also told to announce that they risk the game result being thrown out. I missed the incident but I’d guess it was something like a water bottle being thrown from the stands.
The White Eagles could have scored many times in regulation and put this game out of reach. Gabriel Pop and Sasa Viciknez had the most chances and played until they were exhausted. It looked like they had nothing left for the Penalty kicks and both missed on one last burst of adrenalin.
White Eagles did better by sending in long passes and getting their speedy forwards behind the Lynx defenders. They weren’t always called offside so it was worth repeatedly trying.
The Lynx left their usual starting forwards Kevin Jeffrey and Damien Pottinger on the bench at the start of the game as well as USL all-star Jamie Dodds but the three of them were brought in later and influenced the game. New Lynx players or trialists Edgar Bartolomeu (who has played on the Lynx in prior years) was a starting midfielder and Aaron Steele (who has also played on the Lynx two years ago) was a starting defender. Both played the entire game.
Lynx now advance to the quarterfinals. The CSL now has a problem because they have only four of the eight teams left as three of their teams were upset by amateur teams in this round. I expect they won’t want to pair the Lynx up against one of those amateur teams because of the expected poor attendance. Probably Lynx on the road in Windsor or London would be the dream draw.

Not sure I follow why the amateur teams would be any less of a draw than the CSL teams given the size of most CSL crowds? :D Suspect that the CSL will line up the Lynx with an amateur team to ensure that at least one of their clubs reach the semis. AEK vs City would be a great game but I doubt very much that City will be willing to risk it.
zacRWE - July 15, 2006 03:22 PM (GMT)
sorry I missed it guys, sounded like an awesome one! Good one the Lynx for comming back after being down 2. I guess Serbians like to give up two goal leads! (referencing the 2-0 lead they blew to Ivory Coast)

Whatever happened to random draws for cup matches? ;)
Rocket Robin - July 17, 2006 01:23 AM (GMT)
I don't think there were with the CPSL. The Montreal team would always draw Ottawa; either the Wizards or some amateur team to save expenses.

I think they were the exception Robin. As you say, travel costs and timing would make life very difficult for Montreal and Ottawa so they would put those two together, almost like a regional play-off I guess, and then there would be a draw for everybody else.
I hope that a draw is part of the Cup procedure. If not, it's open to all sorts of abuse.
As for an amateur team versus the Lynx and with the potentially poor attendance, so be it. It's the nature of a Cup like this. I love the minnows versus the giants feel of all this.

the draw for the 1/4 finals was made today, and now the Lynx will travel to Hamilton to face the Hamilton Serbians. Man I'm getting sick of the Serbians.

The crowd was small because there was a Serbian holiday if I'm not mistaking on the day of the game so many serbs stayed home.

Predictably enough AEK London knocked out London City 2-1 last night. Not as close as the scoreline makes it sound by all accounts.
{Edit:- City are not knocked out but will get to play as a wild card team because they will be hosting the finals over the Labour Day weekend.}

The surviving charter franchises like City and the North York Astros definitely seem to control that league to a large extent. Ottawa St Anthony's knocked out the Windsor Border Stars with a 1-0 victory so that would be two amateur clubs out of four for the semis in the absence of this get out of jail card for London City. This thread on a London soccer board provides some of the background to the game on Friday evening:-
