Title: Toronto Fc Unveiled

Ryan Keay - May 11, 2006 08:51 PM (GMT)
Today, in a media conference at the Ricoh Centre at Exhibition Place, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment unveiled the newest addition to their sporting empire, Toronto FC.

The name Toronto FC was one amongst five names made available for selection and was the overwhelming favourite amongst the options, receiving over 40% of votes. It was unveiled in a display featuring MLSE Chairman Larry Tannenbaum, MLS Commissioner Don Garber and MLSE COO Tom Anselmi.

In addition to the new name, the team also unveiled its website http://www.torontofc.ca, logo (pictured below) and colours. The team will wear red and white, with grey highlights. One would get the impression that red and white were always in the cards in order to give the team a more "Canadian" identify, although sources state that a maroon similar to Arsenal's current jersey was considered.

The event featured a who's-who of Canadian soccer. CSA President Kevan Pipe was the closing speaker of the event, and hinted strongly at potential Canadian expansion in 2010, stating that there was interest from multiple Canadian cities. Midfielder Jim Brennan was also in attendance, returning home after a recent national team camp in Florida. He declared a very strong interest in playing for Toronto FC next season and stated that there were a lot of Canadian players with interest in coming back and playing in Toronto.

This weekend, this website will have video of press conference proceedings thanks to site videographer Sean Keay.
