Within the league? look for him to start lighting it up as per prev TFC pennies-on-the-dollar trades.

WOW! Cant wait to see the details. Dallas is in last place and probably has the cap space to absorbe his salary. i suspect that this is to free up massive salary space for another DP so there is proabbly nothing or very little come back our way. Keep in mind that JDG was left unprotected in two Exapansion drafts. Now the question is? Will they use that space this year?

Ya but he was only left unprotected because nobody was going to pay the $1.5 million above the cap hit. I would doubt Dallas is paying any of that either.

How much money is MLSE sending to Dallas?

Rumour also has it that TFC is trading Julian to make room for Kevin McKenna.......

Just saw that. Ives is usually pretty good. DeVos has picked up on it. I'm all for it.

Lopper - July 13, 2012 02:55 AM (GMT)
A few weeks ago it wouldn't have been a surprise at all, but given that he made some reference to discussions of a new deal with the club that is a surprise.

Anyways, it was exciting to have Julian sign when he did. Shame it wasn't a more successful time for him and the club, but we are deep in that position, and if it really is to make room for McKenna that I'm all for that. As a Canada and Koln fan that's exciting and I think his contract is up. If not they are happy to unload salary of veteran players having dropped down to the second league for next season. Will keep my fingers crossed for once on these rumours!

McKenna would definitely bring us leadership on the backline, as well as some help on set pieces both attacking and defending them.

BrennanFan - July 13, 2012 03:08 AM (GMT)
Fuck this shit.

TFCtoMUFC - July 13, 2012 03:18 AM (GMT)
McKenna has looked awesome the last few times out with Canada. This would be an awesome move IMO.

EDIT: Bocanegra could be a possibility as well. Would be really happy with either one.

herthabsc - July 13, 2012 03:36 AM (GMT)
Would McKenna call for DP wages though? It seemed he wasn't a starter for Köln anymore last year, and they were a fucking shambles.

This is what I was wondering. I'd guess him around the 250,000 or 275,000 range. I can see us making him a DP for the rest of this year with a lesser wage next year. Bocanegra would be a DP for sure. Del Piero's name has been floated around twitter. Would make sense in terms of butts in the seats, shirt sales and talk about the team. Wouldn't make sense from a 'make our team better' standpoint though.

Free kick - July 13, 2012 03:50 AM (GMT)
I would be glad to see McKenna. But sheez i hope its not for The DP and I hope that they dont make that mistake again. Use the DP slot to get true value for the money as much as possible. And that means world class, has experience at the highest levels of the game, played for a big club, played inetrnationally, played at the WC. That kind of stuff. yeah Nesta is DP as is Frings. I always liked McKenna but he doesnt have that kind of pedigree so you shouldnt have to over pay.

I'd like to see McKenna and then us the DP to get an attacking Midfielder. Which we dont have. Yeah, Delpiero could do that. Maybe even Ballack.

bgnewf - July 13, 2012 03:53 AM (GMT)
Please please please make the new DP a world class centre back ... and while TFC is at it Keith Makubuya appears to be the only striker on the roster after Johnson and Koevermans. Might be a good idea to fix that as well.

I dont entirely disagree. But Another attacking player or playmaker is just as important as centre back right now. We rely too much on direct long balls and or crosses. There is little in the ways of genius playmking in the final third. In big game, we are predictable as far as devising a game plan against.

I think McKenna can do the job adequately and he wont / shouldnt cost you DP money. They'd be idiots to spend that kind of money and use DP slot on him. He has been a bundesliga and bundesliga 2 kind of player. Whereas a guy like Nesta who isnt even a DP BTW has won the WC and played for AC Milan.

Seems that some journalists are confirming that De Guzman to Dallas trade has transpired.

https://twitter.com/JohnMolinaro

"John Molinaro ‏@JohnMolinaro
BREAKING: Julian de Guzman's agent just confirmed to me a minute ago he's been traded to Dallas."

Is this a football team building move or another MLSE v.6 strategy in reaction to their fear of the impending massive Season Seat Holder collapse about due at the end of the season? I suspect the later.....

When Frank Schäfer took over from Solbakken he intrusted Kevin to start or come in in all the games for Köln. Yes, these games were when Köln was absolutely comical, but they were the most important for the club and McKenna was better then all the other defenders including Geromel and Sereno.
I'd like to see Kevin in TFC red, but I also think Julian is more important to us than we think.

But I thought we were just making "a few minor tweaks"?

Incidentally, Ben Rycroft is reporting that Dallas has little space under the cap and that TFC is likely swallowing a chunk of his salary. If that's the case then any replacement better be huge considering DeGuzman was done anyway at the end of the season.

garbuckle - July 13, 2012 11:10 AM (GMT)
Can't say this news shocks me. It was obvious his contract was in negotiation, especially if we were trying to sign Nesta. We don't have Nesta, but we do still need someone, and the cap space. With Soolsma, Plata, and JDG gone, I would expect to see us get a backup striker of some sort, plus a much needed CB (McKenna or otherwise).

Which, if I remember everything the club has said since hiring AW correctly, is exactly where we should be at this point.

If it's taking any work whatsoever to get old man McKenna over here (see also: home) from his relegated B2 club, that's a great indication of where our club stands.

I think we're scared of the playoffs.

Ultra & Proud - July 13, 2012 12:29 PM (GMT)
Now for sure some moves have to happen and not just McKenna, who I think would be great. I hear Hume is frozen out at PNE. We do need more up front.

Shaughno - July 13, 2012 12:46 PM (GMT)
I've seen people mention Hume, and I think he'd be a great fit with Mariner's system.

McKenna would be fantastic, especially if we get him without making him a DP. I mean if Nesta's not DP, surely Kevin wouldn't be either right?

Scotty - July 13, 2012 12:54 PM (GMT)
Are we actually getting anyone/anything from Dallas or is this just a (partial?) salary dump ?

Toronto FC is trading Julian de Guzman to FC Dallas in exchange for another player.

In a deal between the two worst teams in Major League Soccer that is likely to be finalized later Friday, the Reds will send the veteran Canadian international to Texas.

It’s unclear who the Reds will be receiving in return but the move is more than just the dumping of salary.

De Guzman, who joined TFC in September 2009 from Spain’s top flight La Liga, is one of three designated players on the club. His $1.9 million salary is second on the team to captain Torsten Frings.

I don't want any of their players, I want McKenna and Hume and Friend and Peters and Straith, that's all! :)

toronto red - July 13, 2012 01:40 PM (GMT)
Gotta free up the DP spot now IMO. This cross up with the Euro season means you get Euro based players now or not until next summer with a few exceptions in the January window.

Let's hope, as bgnewf said that we actually get a quality centre half which has been missing since day 0. Mckenna would be decent enough. DP or not.

Huh. Ok. You probably saw more Köln games than me last year - I figure I watched 6-8 at both ends of the season. I know McKenna played the full game when we beat them 3-0, then by the time I watched a bunch more (relegation fight, but the most recent games to now) he seemed to only be coming on for about 20 minutes per game.

I agree that we will miss JDG more than we think though. I think that this whole move may prove to be a really good thing for TFC (depending on who comes back and what we do), but that's not the same as saying his departure won't have an effect.

I count 29 on the Dallas roster (does not include recent homegrown signing Acosta but I don't think he hits the roster until nest year.) So, they don't necessarily have to send anyone back but given that we lost two players off the roster this week, my gut feeling is that someone is coming to Toronto.

I wonder about George John who is injured (concussion) at the moment but may be expendable with the emergence of Matt Hedges. Decent CB if no lingering health issues.

I actually think our most pressing immediate need is a back up goalkeeper but realistically we need upgrades and/or cover virtually everywhere.

What if the player we got back was Hartman?

22 year striker Andrew Wiedeman to TFC per Rudi on Twitter.

TFCtoMUFC - July 13, 2012 02:22 PM (GMT)
He's GA so his salary doesn't count against the cap. He'll probably be gone at the end of the year.

I'd imagine MLSE would try to make a statement.. get fans somewhat excited again.... or am i just daydreaming?

jack's dad - July 13, 2012 02:27 PM (GMT)
For a moment I actually did think we might get a backup keeper... Either way, this is a dump, especially given the GA contract we bring in.

Per Sean on twitter:

Andrew Wiedemen, is your typical hardworking, athletic american striker. He doesn't excel at anything, but does everything well.  He lacks craft to create the space he needs, Must be given service at his feet to score goals.

We got a young player who can spot minutes up top as required with no cap hit (Generation Adidas). We traded for cap flexibility anything Wiedeman can contribute is a bonus. No point in judging this trade until we see what we do with the cap space.

SweetOwnGoal - July 13, 2012 02:32 PM (GMT)
Tifo at the Canada game. Just needs to say "Thanks Julian". God knows it has to be from us and I don't give a shit about what the ROC Vs think about it. It will be our only chance to say goodbye.
