He lived there until the age of 8 with his grandmother and grandfather due to his parent's service aboard the USS Copernicus, an Oberth-class science vessel on a SDSM (Deep Space Science Mission). Three days after his 8th birthday, the Copernicus returned home and docked at McKinley Station for the last time before decommissioning. With his parents taking assignments at Starfleet Command and Starfleet Academy the family moved to the Sausalito area of the San Francisco bay area. Young Travis loved the life of a Starfleet brat and loved his parents even more. They would serve as his personal role models throughout his entire life. There was never any question that Travis would someday join Starfleet. By age 11, West's parents tired of the boredom from their desk jobs and accepted positions aboard the re-commissioned and refitted Copernicus, which had been pulled from mothballs just months after it joined the ghost fleet. The West family settled into their new home aboard the small ship for a final five year archeology and support mission to a frontier planet. Four years into the mission, with the Dominion War in full swing, the Copernicus was re-tasked and staffed as a medical support ship and attached to Task Force Razor, a Federation Interdiction Fleet operating in Cardassian Space. At age 14, young West, saw firsthand what war was like in his mother's sickbay where scores of wounded marines and starfleet officers were treated. Luckily the Copernicus never took any casualties of its own or had to fire its weapons in anger. The ship still earned two battle stars for its participation in the Cardassian Campaign. At age 15, West entered into Starfleet's Pre-Apprenticeship program as part of his final two years of education which was being conducted onboard. This program allowed him to obtain hands-on working knowledge and skill training in the Engineering Department, under the tutelage of his father, the Chief Engineer, Michael West. Travis loved the work. Although he was mostly delegated to perform easy tasks, occasionally under the chief engineer's supervision he was allowed to run a level 3 diagnostic. By age 17, West completed the official Apprenticeship program which would allow him to work in the Engineering Department with a rating of Engineer's Apprentice (rank: Crewman Apprentice, E-2) should he wish to enlist. His father pressed him however, to take the Starfleet officer preparatory exam first before deciding on career in the enlisted ranks. Not a dim teenager, the adolescent scored high enough on the exam to earn a placement on the acceptance list into Starfleet Academy. Upon hearing the good news, the Commanding Officer of the Copernicus swore-in Travis as an Officer Candidate with the acting rank of Warrant Officer and assigned him to the Engineering team where he would remain until departing for the Academy in the fall. During the small ceremony, Travis' mother, Emily, pinned on the Warrant Officer insignia to his collar. For the first time, he truly felt like part of the family. The academy years were not remarkable. West found the regimented routine difficult to adjust to at first but by the second year there were no problems to speak of. His courses mainly consisted of run-of-the-mill academics but he did manage to enroll in engineering related electives whenever possible. By the time he graduated, his parents were back on Earth, working desk jobs once again. The Copernicus, which West had hoped to get assigned to, had been decommissioned once again, along with nearly all of the few remaining Oberth-class vessels. The Oberths were being replaced by the Nova-class vessels which had just starting coming online in the last half-decade. Desiring the small, family like atmosphere that a small science/scout ship like the Oberth's had, West quickly applied for an assignment to one of the new Nova's. By graduation, no offers were forthcoming and West had to take an assignment on a remote Starbase. A few years later, Travis was able to obtain a position on a medium Cruiser, the Norway-class vessel, USS Warspite. While here, he gained valuable skills and leadership experience, eventually serving as the Assistant Department Head in charge of Engineering. After only two years aboard that vessel, West's dream of working on a Nova came to fruition. He accepted an assignment on the new Hawking and transferred aboard. PERSONALITY An extremely curious fellow, West is the most routine and logically thinking officer you'll meet that is NOT a Vulcan. Not one for practical jokes, pranks, or horsing around, Travis likes to be direct with people and say what he thinks. He enjoys solving problems and generally spends his private time studying anything he can get his hands on relating to warp mechanics. A somewhat sheltered childhood has left him emotionally and socially detached from others to the point where he prefers to be alone in his off-duty hours. FAMILY Father – Cdr. Michael West, Age: 55. Propulsion Research Engineer, Starfleet Propulsion Lab, Earth Mother – Doctor Cdr. Emily West, Age: 54. Professor of Anatomy, McCoy School of Medicine, Starfleet Academy, Earth. |
