Let The Flames Begin!, Chapter One in the Life of Kristy

The crack of dawn. The sun's warm rays were just starting to touch the earth. Purples and pinks chased away the midnight blue in the sky, but that would only last about an hour as the sky blue came right behind them. Long red hair flowing out behind her, Kristy Moore raced up to Pokemon Lab, knowing that since she got a head start she would not be late. Almost...there! By the time she reached the door, she was huffing and panting pretty heavily, but she knew it would all be worth it. An image of her home, her sister, and her Eevee in her mind, she lifted herself and knocked on the door to the lab. I hope the fire-type starter wasn't taken! Then I'd have to come back! She dreaded having to make this run again anytime in the near future, but Kristy was a dedicated fire-type trainer. No other type suited her just right.

((Ah, stealing a card from my deck, are we? xD))

"Just a minute!" called a voice from deep within the lab, followed by a surprised yelp and a cry from a Pokemon. "Ahh! Wartortle, watch out! No, Kabu, don't touch that! I swear, if you even think about that, I'll- DAMMIT."

There was a loud crashing noise, a few more swears and a lot of banging around from inside of the building before the door finally creaked open. A small turtle pokemon peered up at Kristy with weary eyes, then smiled. Wartortle briefly glanced over his shoulder to make sure none of the chaos had extended into the front room, then opened the door a little wider and beckoned for the girl to come inside.

Just then, a middle-aged man and a orange-furred Pokemon with a flaming tail burst into the room. Professor Pine seemed uncharacteristically frustrated as he chased the Kabu, his anger written all over his face and a vein popping in his forehead. Wartortle groaned and looked away, covering his eyes in embarrassment just as Pine leapt for the tiger Pokemon, grabbing its tail just below the flame. The Kabu yowled in protest and tried to get away, but the Professor managed to lift the struggling feline into his arms and stand up. Eventually the Kabu gave up and moodily relaxed, a sour expression darkening his countenance.

"Sorry about that," said the Professor, turning an apologetic smile to Kristy and walking over. "These Kabu are always so reckless; very hard to train, indeed. Now, is there something you needed?"

Kristy smiled at Wartortle in return to his friendliness, and giggled at the professor's condition. "I am here for my first Pokemon." she answered, reaching a hand out to stroke the fire-type's head. "Kabu, correct?" she asked the Pokemon in Pine's arms. "My name is Kristy Moore." she said, both to Kabu, Wartortle, and Professor Pine. She followed the water-type's gesture from before and slipped inside, awestruck at the commotion that must have gone on inside. She looked over her shoulder at the prof, smiling in a friendly manner. Nothing so far on this glorious day could set her off, and hopefully it would stay that way.

The Kabu mewed cutely, smiling up at Kristy before giving Pine one last glare.

"It's nice to meet you, Kristy. I'm Professor Pine." said the professor with a friendly grin. "You came for your first Pokemon, you said? Well, we have a Honyuu, a Tane, a Poliwag, and this Kabu... But I doubt you'd want him, he's a real pain in the neck. Aren't you, you little imp?"

Beaming proudly as though he had just been praised, the Kabu managed to slip out of Pine's arms and land gracefully on the ground. Then, purring, he rubbed against Kristy's leg and put on his sweetest face.

Two-faced devil, the professor thought with an irritated frown.

Kristy smiled down at Kabu and picked him up, careful with his tail. "Actually, I came for a fire-type." she explained. "This Kabu, impish or not, will be my choice." she told Pine with a grin. "And besides, I'm we'll get along just fine. My old friend had a Pokemon like that and we got along beautifully." She was grateful for Professor Pine's concern, showing that with a smile and a glint in her amethyst eyes. Kabu would be the perfect partner for her, defiantly better than any grass-type or water-type. Her heart burned with flames, so it was only fitting that her Pokemon did as well. Impish? Not a problem. Kristy and all her British glory has dealt with this kind before, mainly with Ryo's starter Mudkip, so this would be no new experience for her. Besides, Kristy could tell that Kabu wanted out, and maybe treating him with loving acceptance would shimmer down the impish nature within. "So Professor, what do you say? I take this little trouble maker off your hands and get my first Pokemon all in one play. Everyone wins." she said with a smile, stroking the Kabu's head gently.

Pine and Wartortle exchanged a thoughtful glance, and then the professor bent over and picked up the Kabu. Straightening up, he held out the feline for Kristy to take. Meanwhile, Wartortle ran into the back room and shortly returned with a pokeball in one hand and a small bag filled with supplies in the other. Returning to the two humans, he held up the items for Kristy.

"There! He's all yours! Keep him!"

Kristy was very happy, and she took Kabu from the Professor. I really hope you won't regret this.... The voice of reason told her. Shaking it's warning away, Kristy took the supplies from the little turtle Pokemon and smiled at the Professor and Wartortle before slinging the bag over her shoulder and making her way. Now...a nickname perhaps? She pondered this subject, setting the Kabu down so he could follow her. As they walked together, the name suddenly hit her. "I'll name you, Quidel. Like?" she asked the Kabu. Quidel grunted in response, no longer needing to use his facade to get by. Kristy smiled and walked on cheerfully. "Quidel it is."
