The girl cursed lightly under her breath, "Why's it gotta be so damn dark?" she spat, leaning against one of the dark colored pine trees as she examined the map in her hands.
"Hoku, c'mere for a second?"
A Cyndaquil, who was clutching a small stick with his barely noticable fingers, waddled up to her, the flames on his back emitting a spooky, dim glow. Mitri, with her back against the tree, slid down it so that she was awkwardly sitting next to her Cyndaquil, who she used as a makeshift lantern.
Hoku was silent, standing up on the tips of his feet to try and decode the map his trainer was reading.
"Ahh...We're here...An' we need to go over there...And...Blargh. Why didn't I listen to my dad when he tried to teach me how to read maps on the road?" Mitri set her jaw, tracing the details and curves in the map. Really, it shouldn't have been that difficult; it was a simple map.
"I bet it's the light out here. Bah. C'mon Hoku, let's find out how to get the heck outta here..." With that said, she rolled up the map into a tight scroll, shifted her shoulder so that her backpack slid down it and shoved the map into a side compartment.
Heaving the bag back onto her back, she began to wander off in a -- more or less -- randomly chosen direction, with her Cyndaquil scuttling off after her.

A dark chuckle sounded from behind the tree Mitri had been leaning on.

" The dark is the least of your worries at the moment. "

A small, devious looking Houndour slinked from behind the tree's shadow. Blood red eyes scanned the trainer and her Cyndaquil carefully as he advanced towards the pair. This was his territory, these two had no right barging in. The hound walked slowly around the intruders, pausing when he was in front of them. He flashed the duo a intimadating smile, the light from Hoku's flames making his canines' shine.

" Didn't anyone ever tell you it's rude to enter one's property uninvited? " he asked, a small snarl sounding in his chest.

At that dark chuckle, the little Cyndaquil froze in mid-step, one foot off the ground, he clutched the stick he was holding a little tighter and whirled around. "Wha--?" Mitri spun around to face the dark creature-- hardly a shadow as he moved towards them.
/What the heck is that?/ she thought, brow furrowing as the Houndour's form became recognizable due to the flames that illuminated a small area around them. A Houndour? They actually lived in this forest?

Hoku glared at him through his squinted eyes and replied, "Your property? I didn't see any warnings that this territory belonged to someone!" he objected, a wave of uneasiness washing over him as he eyed the canines of the hound in front of them, gulping slightly. Those were some sharp teeth.

The Houndour let out a booming laugh, what a joke this Cyndaquil was! Trying to tell him off when he couldn't even control his own fear!

The hound stepped closer, a smirk spreading across his face. " Hm, perhaps you didn't look hard enough? I'm sure a few signs would of made themselves noticed if you tried, but that's not the issue at hand. " he paused, trying to assess the fear his victim was going through. Another smirk snaked it's way onto his features as he continued. " I hope you don't expect me to just let you waltz out of here without a few things to remember me by, do you? That would be rude of me as a host! "

The Houndour looked at the fire mouse as if the idea had geniunely hurt him. A small crackle of vicious laughter ruined the moment however, as he made himself tower over Hoku.

" So what should I do here. That girl there doesn't look very tasty, but you.. " he sighed, taking in a large breath of air, " You smell absolutely divine. I guess I'll munch you up, then give the human a few bruises she won't be soon forgetting. How does that sound to you? " he whispered into the fire type's ear, hoping to paralyze him with fear.

Hoku flinched at the Houndour's booming laugh, blinking up at him with the same squinted eyes all Cyndaquil's had.

Once the large hound stepped closer, Hoku took a step back, the fire on his back flaring down just a little. No, we looked pretty hard! he insisted, refusing to give in so easily to the argument. His uneasiness grew when the hound continued to smirk at him and speak.
To Mitri, it was just a bunch of growls and squeaks coming from the two Poke'mon.
"Hoku?" his trainer groaned in a hushed voice, "Get o'er here!"

Hoku, on the other hand, didn't move, and instead flattened himself a little closer to the ground when the Houndour towered over him, letting loose vicious cackles that sent shivers down his spine.
If it were possible for his eyes to widen, they would have; but instead, Hoku only tensed.
No! he puffed, You-you're just...Bluffing! he flared the flames on his back as high as they would go and sank away from the Houndour.

The Houndour smiled down at the Cyndaquil, thinking over what the mouse had just said.

" You're right, I could indeed be bluffing. " he slowly said, stirring up a small dust cloud with his front paw, a bored expression on his face. " But, " he continued, shooting a sneer at his victim as he lowered into a hunting crouch. " Why take a chance in finding out? "

Before the fire mouse could have any time to answer, the hound let out a vicious snarl and leapt at his back. His front paws began to glow an eerie purple as long, curved claws shot out in what looked to be a Shadow Claw attack.

Hoku bared his tiny fangs at the Houndoom, quivering slightly.
Surely he's bluffing! Right? Right? the little Fire mouse thought, the flames on his back bright and flaring, illuminating the small space around his plump, tiny body.

Hoku took a small step back, readying himself for battle, as did Mitri, behind him, who clenched her fist. "Get ready, Hoku." Her bold voice sounded-- though her tone shook.
"Quiii!" Hoku went rigid when the Houndoom leapt.

"Hoku! Quick, dodge it!" Hoku shot to his left in a quick response, but not quick enough.
The Houndoom's glowing claws slashed over his flank, making him stumble and fall- chin on the ground. "Qui--" his huff was blown out in a cloud of smoke as he hurriedly scrambled up to his paws.

"Smokescreen!"

The flames on Hoku's back flared, and he inhaled sharply; a moment later exhaling a cloud of smoke that stretched over the area, towards his opponent.
