Bienvenue

~Welcome to The Third Estate. Set in Paris in the summer of 1794, this alternate-history RP allows you to decide the outcome of the Revolution. The Reign of Terror is in full swing; Robespierre heads the bloodthirsty Committee of Public Safety. No one's ideology goes unquestioned, and the people of France are experiencing a moral freedom such as has never been seen before. Paris is a place of fear, lust, and power-brokering. How will you survive it?

This site is rated R for violence, language and some sexuality.

1. REGISTER AS YOUR FULL CHARACTER NAME (that is, FIRST and LAST--not the ridiculously long list of middle names some of these days have). But no nicknames. No nicknames. No nicknames. Any non-realistic names will be summarily deleted.

2. Read the Plot and Factions before choosing or creating a character.

3. Do not post in any of the forums except the OOC Forum until your character application is moved to the 'Approved Characters' forum!

4. Be nice to the admin and mods. If you must criticize us, at least do so in full sentences devoid of curse words. Barring that, though, frankness of opinions is aways nice. But via PM always, please... no spreading insurrection, etc., that isn't nice. And we'll guillotine you.

5. Don't be an idiot/mean/intentionally irritating. You know what I'm talking about.

6. THE IMAGES RULES: There are no face claims, but be kind enough not to steal someone else's playby. That said, no limit on signatures, but don't stretch the page. You may choose to use an old portrait of a character as your playby, i.e. a painting of Robespierre that's found its way onto the web, but no anime or cartoons are allowed. I'd give a reason other than personal taste if there were any, but there are not. I just find anime aesthetically displeasing.

In addition, please do not use icons or any non-photograph or -painting images as the sole image in your signature or avatar. If you really want to put, say, the insignia of a real 1790's French military troupe as your avatar, PM me with reasons and a link to the image. Approval is at my discretion.

7. Keep it below the rated-R limit, and if too many of your threads end up revolving around sex, think about whether it's in-character for your character to be a sex-addict. People have been brought to the guillotine for licentiousness, you know.

8. Ten sentence minimum on all posts. The general standard of writing on this site is high, however, so we expect much more than that from most. But we recognize that quality and quantity are not interchangeable.

9. Write in full sentences and clear, grammatical English. We also allow French, since this is set in France, but of course you will only want to RP in French if your RP partner also knows the language. Otherwise, please provide translations at the bottom of the post.

10. No power-playing/god-modding.

11. Only advertise on the advertising board.

12. And finally, and MOST IMPORTANTLY: This is an historical RP, but we are NOT very strict about following real events. Yes, it's cool if you choose a canon character. It's also cool if you choose a fruitseller and decide to make her a radical feminist and the lover of George Danton, assuming he'll have you. wink.gif But really--do as much or as little research as you like. I can't laud wikipedia enough, but I think I've provided adequate information in brief for everyone to have a jolly old time without looking things up.

That said, I find that research and verisimilitude in RP can be really fun.

***NOTE: Basic posting etiquette. I HATE to list so many rules, because it's silly, but here: UNLESS A POST IS MARKED 'OPEN' in the second title line, you cannot post in it without PMing one of the participants. Period, end of story.
