Bienvenue

~Welcome to The Third Estate. Set in Paris in the summer of 1794, this alternate-history RP allows you to decide the outcome of the Revolution. The Reign of Terror is in full swing; Robespierre heads the bloodthirsty Committee of Public Safety. No one's ideology goes unquestioned, and the people of France are experiencing a moral freedom such as has never been seen before. Paris is a place of fear, lust, and power-brokering. How will you survive it?

This site is rated R for violence, language and some sexuality.

The Plot
Here you'll find the pertinent historical information, an explanation of the ideologies, and the way in which we've altered history in order to make it easier and more entertaining to RP.

Character Creation
Here you'll find historical figures, and a few of our own design, who have a part to play in the Revolution. Please make a note of their ideological positions, as that will be very important to the RP. You'll also find the information necessary to create original characters, if you so choose.

Character Sheets
This is where you post your application for a new character. Thus far, we're accepting both canon and original characters, but original characters must all have a declared ideology. No one is allowed to stay neutral, even if that's how you feel, or the Committee of Public Safety might just summon you to the guillotine...

Place de la Concorde
The site of the guillotine and a great public square, equipped with a grand fountain and imposing architecture, the Place de la Concorde is perpetually crowded with bloodthirsty mobs eager to witness one of the many executions the Committee of Public Safety orders.

Place de la Bastille
The place where the Bastille stood only recently has just been turned into a great public square, where political demonstrations and celebrations often take place. The lighter side, one might say, of the Revolution occurs here.

The Back Alleys
There is always a dark side to any city, and in this time of general chaos, there's a flourishing black-market trade. Prostitutes cater to anyone and everyone in the name of freedom, and dice-players gamble away what little they have left for food. More than one murder has taken place in the darker corners of Paris, but the National Guard has more pressing matters to take care of than cutthroats and thieves--for example, political subversives.

Taverne des Corbeaux
Named for the black birds that perch in the nearby Place de la Concorde, site of public executions, this sumptuous meeting-place of all political sects is always filled with disputants... what might, in different times, be called the 'upper class'. The patrons of the Taverne des Corbeaux, however, will hasten to assure you that they are common people just like those who serve them...

Taverne de la Rivière
The cheaper, more affordable place to spend time, the Taverne de la Rivière sits on the bank of the often-malodorous Seine. It's occupied by shady characters and the poor folk who once made up the city's rich bourgeoisie, along with the odd noble who's managed to escape the guillotine.

Residential Districts
Even in the safety of one's own home, the Committee of Public Safety may always be watching. It's a tense thing to live in Paris, and every neighbor may be your enemy; you had best hope for a loving wife or husband and loyal children, or even this last refuge may be lost.

The Debate Floor
Here we discuss matters of state. It can get heated, and people often speak over each other, siding aggressively with their own factions... or not, in which case the drama really begins. This is also where people stand trial for conspiring against the aims of the Revolution.

The Jacobins
This elite club of radical revolutionaries purports to side with the Sans-Culottes... but rarely do they converse with them. Instead, fear and hatred breed amongst these reactionaries, whose hold on power relies completely on the influence of Robespierre.

The Enragés
Opposed to the Jacobins but supported by the Sans-Culottes, the Enragés hold a very tenuous position indeed. Amongst the radicals they associate with, they feel themselves the only reasonable faction, and propose practical measures, like price control, to prevent class imbalance... but practicality is increasingly becoming obsolete in the blood-soaked politics of the House of Governance.

The Sans-Culottes
A great deal of private whispering goes on among this populist group. Whom they support, who is falling out of favor... in the House of Governance, rumors can mean the guillotine for whomever falls under suspicion.

Robespierre's Chambers
The Committee of Public Safety decides who gets the guillotine, and often its members meet in private with Robespierre after the General Assembly. Only prominent members are allowed in to speak with him.

Propaganda
Here you'll find propaganda supporting the Revolutionary agenda. Paintings by David, leaflets, posters... all members of the National Convention and all pro-Revolutionaries (false ones included) may post graphics, cartoons, leaflets, etc. Also published here will be the monthly pro-revolutionary journal, 'L'Âme de la Revolution'.

Counter-Propaganda
Here you'll find the monthly counterrevolutionary journal, 'Le Tribun du Peuple,' run by François-Noël Babeuf. You may also post artwork, cartoons, leaflets, pamphlets, etc. However... if you do so, you may very well find yourself interrogated by members of the National Guard. It's a great way to start a plot, so if your character is against Robespierre's Terror, post your dissent here!

Character Journals
Put your character's journal here. This is where they may record their deepest, darkest thoughts... but beware, for nothing is truly private during the Revolution, and the wrong ideas can get you killed.

Letters
At times it's too dangerous to meet face-to-face, or there's news you can only communicate in writing. Here you may post letters from one character to another, and reply to them in the same thread. You may also write to NPC (or PCs) who are abroad or on the warfront.
